Washington (CNN) – Christine O'Donnell appears to be trying to use humor to defuse a decades-old admission that she once "dabbled into witchcraft," which prompted leading Republican strategist Karl Rove to urge the Delaware GOP Senate nominee to further explain her statement.
Rove, on "Fox News Sunday," said that O'Donnell "can't simply ignore" the fact that she said during a 1999 episode of "Politically Incorrect" that "I dabbled into witchcraft – I never joined a coven. But I did, I did. … I dabbled into witchcraft." O'Donnell also said during the taping of the show that one of her first dates with a witch was "on a satanic altar."
O'Donnell tweeted late Sunday night that if she had the powers of a witch then Rove would be backing her candidacy.
"I did comment that if I were a witch, Rove would be a supporter," O'Donnell wrote on the microblog. "I would have turned him into a "Newt", because Gingrich says we win."
O'Donnell is referring to former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who has expressed support for her campaign. O'Donnell, a social conservative and Tea Party-favorite candidate, shocked the political world last week when she defeated GOP establishment-backed Rep. Mike Castle for the right to run as the Republican nominee for Senate in November.

Wow . . . .people of Delaware – I feel very sad for you . . .now we understand that "Miss Piggy" has dabbled in witchcraft??
Maybe if the US totally goes to hell (we're halfway there), the junior senator from Delaware will be a witch, and the first woman president will be a drop-out, half-term ex-Alaska governor who speaks in tongues.
Do you people have any constructive ideas, or do you only just attack (for the sake of attacking)? Let Palin and Miss Piggy go out and debate (in a forum where Fox News can't protect you).
Wow, I didn't think she could get any dumber. Hey, Repubs, are you really counting on this bimbette as your hope for the future? You may be better off hiding her in her (broom) closet and just putting a cardboard cutout up for any appearances. That way you don't have to worry about her failure to ensure the clutch for her brain is properly engaged before she releases the parking brake on her mouth!
I bet her campaign manager now knows how the Captain of the Lusitania felt after the munitions he carried self-exploded after a torpedo hit!
"Oh! Ha ha ha, of course I was only kidding-I would _never_ say we should wipe out Israel! Ha ha ha!"
"OMG, did _I_ say that last week? Well, that's all in the past...why don't we just look at what _you_ might have said in the past, Mr. Rove (Chris Wallace, David Gregory, whoever...)"
Karl had better watch out he mmight have bitten off more than he can chew. O Donnell has been known to Dabble in witchcraft. She may have him castrated by witchcraft then Karl might have to switch to dresses as punishment
Karl better watch he says or Christine will cast a spell on him.
"Attn. Media and Politicians: It's All About Palin' - It is only because they talk about her. If they would just shut up she will fade away.
What else did she dabble into? So much for her family values
Is this is what our country has come to they want a moron who practiced witch craft to make laws!!!!!!
Unfortunately for O'Donnell, she cannot brush off the general criticism sane Americans have about her lies, her lack of experience and her fiscal irresponsibility. Putting lipstick on a pig doesn't make the pig go away.
I can forsee the National Democratic Committee using the video clip to paint all Tea party candidates as "untrustworthy." Karl Rove knows this and that is why he is speaking up.
"I dabbled in witchcraft and satanic worship but now I'm a Christian fundamentalist social conservative" is the new "I dodged the draft but now I'm a wartime President."
So, she laughs it off but doesn't actually address the issues about this at all, the most significant one being whether she just made up the entire thing.
Why are these Tea Partiers so unwilling to do unscripted press conferences or interviews? What are they hiding?
Wow, she's dumber than Sharon Angle.
Kar; Rove should crawl back into the sewer he came out of and take this bimbo with him.
If Timothy McVeigh were alive today, he'd be a card carrying member of the Tea Party.
1999 was not decades ago. Sarah Palin has dabbled in witchcraft and that has not hurt her pocketbook so maybe all the Teabaggers can come clean and admit they will cast a spell over all make you believe in their cause. Now it all makes sense why there are people that belong to this group that has no agenda or policy other then to say Government is too big and the black President is bad. The Republican party has become the biggest joke in American history with the likes of Beck, Hannity, Palin, Limbaugh,O Donnell, Boehner,Newt, etc.Republicans are lead by these fictional characters and there is barely a viable candidate in this party. After ruining the country for eight years they decided to do absolutley nothing for the people since Obama was elected by the people.
There could be NO BETTER case to be made for the absolute futility and hopelessness of the Dem's election hopes than this fixation on a candidate's decade-old comments.
November can't come soon enough. You betcha!!
You should correct this report. She made the statement in 1999, which my calendar says was 11 years ago. You say it as "a decades-old admission", which of course implies more than one decade. Let's be clear – she was not a "teen" when she made this remark, even if her campaign chooses to mis-characterize it that way.
Fact is this woman isn't smart enough to be a witch. it takes years of dedication and study to become a priestess or priest. it takes self discipline. but aside from that, Wicca is a religion that has nothing to do with the devil. he's a Christian myth, not a Pagan one. so who knows who or what she 'dabbled in' back in her youth. but people need to lose the stereotype of witches as some evil mythological creatures. they're everyday people, some with very special gifts, who try to do good for their fellow man same as every other religion. and they don't need to put her down for looking at other ways to worship. Lord knows there are enough legitimate things to knock her for!
What she meant to say was if she had the powers of a witch she would turn Carl Rove into a toad. Oh, wait a minute, Carl Rove IS a toad. Never mind.
Is the writer trying to defuse the comment? It is not a "decades old" comment. It was a decade ago. Give or take a few months. Stay with facts please.
"And what do we burn apart from witches?"
"More witches!!"
Let's see - to her way of thinking, just "thinking" something is the same as doing it (which is fundamentalist christian flawed logic). So I guess it makes sense that going on a date with a guy who might be into witchcraft means she dabbled into witchcraft.
Dabbling by association.
Boy, these Tea Partiers get even more stupid as each day passes.
If she were a witch, she's turn herself into a mindless, platitude-spouting, reactionary toad. Ooooops! Too late!!!
Evil Karl Rove better look out before he is bewitched.
