Rumsfeld to 'pull no punches' in new book

Rumsfeld’s new book will hit bookstores in January.
Rumsfeld’s new book will hit bookstores in January.

(CNN) – Don Rumsfeld's long-anticipated memoir will be released in January, and the former defense secretary isn't going to pull any punches, his publisher said Monday.

The upcoming book – "Known and Unknown" – will hit book stores January 25 and "is filled with previously undisclosed details and insights about the Bush administration, 9/11, and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq," according to the book's publisher, Sentinel, a division of Penguin.

The book's title harkens to his infamous 2002 quote explaining there were "known unknowns" and "unknown unknowns" when it came to the war in Iraq – a word jumble that Rumsfeld critics found emblematic of his inartful leadership.

And if there is any doubt Rumsfeld will reveal new details, the former defense secretary is planning to launch a website to coincide with the books publication that will feature previously undisclosed documents.

"It's both a fascinating narrative for today's readers and an unprecedented resource for tomorrow's historians, said Sentinel president and publisher Adrian Zackheim The manuscript delivers everything I was hoping for and much more."

Rumsfeld has largely dodged the public eye since his abrupt resignation from the Pentagon the day after the 2006 midterm elections – when the Republican party lost control of Congress largely because of the unpopularity with the war in Iraq.

It remains unclear how much Rumsfeld was paid to write the memoir, but he is pledging to donate the book's proceeds to veterans' charities

Are the pages of this book going to be printed on absorbent paper?

That way, we could take it into the bathroom, and it would actually be worth something.

"Good job, brownie." Oops, I mean Donnie.

What will you do with the book proceeds, Rummy – use it to help compensate the thousands of US soldiers and Iraqi civilians that are maimed or dead (for no good reason) – other than for the arrogance of you and your "war criminal" neo-con friends?

I've got buddies fighting overseas (and BOY, multiple deployments later, and some of them are angry with you, Rummy). I'll pray for your soul (assuming that you even have one).

Wonder if he will give any reasons for ignoring the terrorist threat on this country UNTIL 911 happened. One analyst compared the internet chatter coming in like a "white noise" there was so much of it and Bush took something like 80 vacation days from Jan 20 (his inauguration) up to Sept 11. Unreal .... asleep at the wheel, with Rummy at his side!

The title of the book should be "War Criminology 101."

OK, so he'll "pull no punches," but will he tell any truths, shed any light, own any failings?

"Inartful" leadership aside-I'd rather say treasonous, immoral, shameful-I found his use of "known unknowns" vs "unknown unknowns" to describe the Intelligence situation perfectly.

Even if we were able to address all of the "unknowns" in Afghanistan, for example, we could still be blindsided by outside influences of which we were not aware. You can only properly defend against what you expect to happen-not against what you cannot imagine. The New Orleans floods, the BP oil leak--these were not imaginable, and clearly we had not prepared to defend against these problems. That was the situation Mr. Rumsfeld was describing, plain and simple. No need for derision.

Known and Unknowns, more like book of half truths and outright lies, Mr. you go in with the Army you have not the one you want. I'm sure the Veterans who were paralyzed because they had to go in without proper armored equipment will appreciate your blood money donation. I hear Prosthetic limbs are quite expensive.

I am hopeful that one day America is able to recognize deablth of character again and appreciate truth. This man stands for both.

Today we are the society of Jerseys Shores. Our airways are filled with t Bill Maher and Levey Johnston's of the world.

Once day America we will go back to what really counts and that is Character and not sparks.

2006 Elections were very fateful. That is when the Democrat liberals won control of both houses of Congress and the Recession started. They need to be stuffed back in a box so we put the country right again, and then get rid of this idiot the stole the presidency for. The 2006 and 2008 was all about getting drugs legalized

Regardless of the revelations in this book, I've always felt the need to defend Mr. Rumsfeld on the "known unknowns" statement. I came across the exact words in military training where the purpose was to inform the student that there are things they know for sure (the enemy has guns), things they know that they are uninformed about (I don't know if the enemy has bombs), and things that will be a surprise (the enemy has a new secret superweapon). If the media had been more informed, they would not have blown it out of proportion like they did.

Rumsfeld wasn't going to be satisfied until he had a war.
His whole, TOY-general career was based on exactly that: toys.
EVERY dead & wounded soldier from the Iraq war of convenience should haunt him every night. problem is,
They won't, beacuse the man has no conscious.
His practiced, "I can lie to anyone and it doesn't matter!" (except to dead Americans) was in itself a war crime.

the worst American I can conceive of...

    no comments yet??

Osama Bin Laden and al queda killed over 3000 Americans for no reason on 9/11.

Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz et al killed 4000 Americans and tens of thousands of Iraqis in Iraq for no good reason. AND THEY LET BIN LADEN GET AWAY IN Afghanistan.

Rumsfeld's book should be call CROOK and CROOKED!!!

This moron has NOTHING worth sharing after he and Bush sent us into TWO WARS costing BILLIONS per month and ran our economy and deficit right into the TOILET!!!

I find it truly laughable that Republicans like Rumsfeld, Rove, Cheney ALL have time to WRITE a book about everything other than what they SHOULD HAVE DONE while they were power.

These morons did NOTHING for 8 LONG years except pass UN-PAID FOR FAILED POLICES!!! They spent our country into the toilets and then just walked away from the pile of POOP they themselves created and then have the nerve to blame President Obama and the middle class!!!
