Rumsfeld to 'pull no punches' in new book

Rumsfeld’s new book will hit bookstores in January.
Rumsfeld’s new book will hit bookstores in January.

(CNN) – Don Rumsfeld's long-anticipated memoir will be released in January, and the former defense secretary isn't going to pull any punches, his publisher said Monday.

The upcoming book – "Known and Unknown" – will hit book stores January 25 and "is filled with previously undisclosed details and insights about the Bush administration, 9/11, and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq," according to the book's publisher, Sentinel, a division of Penguin.

The book's title harkens to his infamous 2002 quote explaining there were "known unknowns" and "unknown unknowns" when it came to the war in Iraq – a word jumble that Rumsfeld critics found emblematic of his inartful leadership.

And if there is any doubt Rumsfeld will reveal new details, the former defense secretary is planning to launch a website to coincide with the books publication that will feature previously undisclosed documents.

"It's both a fascinating narrative for today's readers and an unprecedented resource for tomorrow's historians, said Sentinel president and publisher Adrian Zackheim The manuscript delivers everything I was hoping for and much more."

Rumsfeld has largely dodged the public eye since his abrupt resignation from the Pentagon the day after the 2006 midterm elections – when the Republican party lost control of Congress largely because of the unpopularity with the war in Iraq.

It remains unclear how much Rumsfeld was paid to write the memoir, but he is pledging to donate the book's proceeds to veterans' charities

Why hell, you don't need to buy his book to get inside info
on what happened in the White House or The Pentagon
during his tenure. All you need to do is ask a liberal what
went on. They know what Bush and Rumsfeld were thinking
about EVERYTHING. There's no secret stuff to find out.
The liberals don't even need to attend security briefings to
know every nook and cranny concerning world affairs.
Why hell, they are even smarter than Condi Rice and she has
    three degrees and a doctorate.

Donald Rumsfeld was an abject failure as Secretary of Defense, not because of any "known unknowns" or "unknown unknowns," but rather because he ignored the "known knowns." Among those are the importance of plannning for the post-conflict phase of military operations, the stupidity of basing all of your plans on best-case assumptions and then refusing to make any contingency plans should your assumptions turn out to be wrong, a long history of successful and failed strategies for fighting insurgencies, and strong statutory and treaty prohibitions on torture. With a few minutes thought I could come up with many more but, quite frankly, Rumsfeld isn't worth taking the time.

As a 24 year retired military veteran who served on active duty during the entire "Rumsfeld years", I can tell you there is no one we despised more and respected less. This man was and is an embarrassment to the U.S. and deserves NO accolades or place in history. His lack of leadership, blatant disregard for the troops and the information his senior officers provided him, and his stance on firing anyone who dared disagree with him or try to provide advice is well known amongst the services. I wish him and his book nothing but the worst!!

You'd think this guy would get tired of lying to the America public. It he make a dime it should go to the families of honest soldiers that died or injured because of his deceit. In fact he should give all his money now and go work at McDonald's.

Does he find it hard to live off of his big retirement check and whatever other money he gets? Sound as if he is trying to spin this book so that he can become rich again. Does he include all of his dirty laundry in this book?

It should be interesting although certain to be self serving. I'd like to hear how he could say with absolute certainty that they knew where the WMDs were and also why he would say that you fight a war with the army you have and not the one you might want given that it was a war of choice. Also, why did he not listen to his generals who said we would need a much larger occupation force than Rumsfeld considered necessary. I'll be shocked if he admits to making any major errors in judgment but we'll see.

It's obvioius to me. I guess that makes me the smart one. There are things that we know we don't know. There also are things that we don't know we should know we don't know. It's a little confusing but examine it carefully and it will come out.

    Listen here Rumsfeld,

I hope your book will have no "weapons of mass distruction' excuses but reveal the real reason you jokers went into Iraq. That's all the American people need to know from you. Otherwise, please go away we have heard enough crap from you and your cronies.

I think he will pull a few punches that should be aimed at himself. The cause for one of the biggest foreign policy blunders in US history.

Hey CNN what do you mean by

"the Republican party lost control of Congress largely because of the unpopularity with the war in Iraq"

That was just the icing on the cake. The Jack Boot Republicans lost control of Congress because they had worked hand in hand with the Dim Son, Court Appointed Boy President to destroy this country, economically, morally and spiritually. These clowns had been screaming for decades "Let us show you what we can do". They did show us and we got rid of them.

If he doesn't tell the truth about the run-up to Iraq - the cherry-picking and outright lying to make a case for pre-emptive war - then it won't be worth the paper it's printed on.
