Washington (CNN) - A defense bill that includes the repeal of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy failed to advance in the U.S. Senate on Tuesday as Republicans closed ranks to keep the bill from coming up for debate.
The bill stalled on a 56-43 vote, four short of the 60 votes needed to break a Republican-led filibuster. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, joined the opposition as a tactical move, allowing him to bring it up later.
Republicans stood united against the measure even though some GOP senators favor lifting the Pentagon's requirement that gays and lesbians keep their sexuality a secret. Republican opponents complained that Democratic leaders are limiting the debate and could have refused to allow GOP amendments to the broader National Defense Authorization Act, which included the "don't ask, don't tell" repeal provision.
President Obama had promised to repeal the congressionally enacted ban on military service by openly gay and lesbian sevicemembers. Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs said the White House is "disappointed" at the Senate vote, "but we'll keep trying."

Republicans can't stand the thought of equality. Who here is surprised?
Personally, if a fellow tax-paying American wants to jump in front of a bullet for me, they have my thanks regardless of how they choose to live their lives...in the land of the FREE.
Once again that idiot Harry Reid has destroyed our best chance of repealing DADT by his handling of the defense bill. He, not Republicans, is the main one to blame for this. Why would he stick a contraversial immigration clause in the bill? As nutty as Sharon Angle is, I wouldn't be too disappointed if she won the Nevada senate seat. If Reid does hang on, surely the senate Democrats will wake up and replace him.
Let's face it folks, the Republicans - the party of NO, as in "No Ideas", are simply a party of cowards. They fail on every level of government to lead. They fail to work for the American people. They fail to listen. Instead they choose to whine, standing on the sidelines and bitching, but doing nothing. Cry all you want about the imperfect democrats, but at least they are actively engaged in fixing the country's problems, while the GOP - Got 0 Plans - Republicans stand around and scratch their collective butts with their middle fingers extended in the air, pointed directly at every American citizen. Let's vote these GOP cowards out of government for good come November!
Screw them, really, just screw them.
GOP...Gaming Our People.
YOU do not matter to them. YOUR FAMILY does not matter to them. YOUR HOME does not matter to them. YOUR CHILDREN do not matter to them. YOUR JOB does not matter to them. YOUR HEALTH does not matter to them. YOUR LIFE does not matter to them. YOUR FINANCES do not matter to them. THE CONSTITUTION does not matter to them. The ONLY thing that matters to these people is being in control and getting to run with the corporate big boys while they turn the rest of th ecountry into a poverty-stricken, poorly (and selectively) educated, morrass of debt-riddled indentured servants for their corporate buddies. Anything that threatens their use of religiosity as an anesthetic for the masses is anathema to them because the bible-thumping social-conservative chimps living next door to you will vote Republican without a care in the world about their economic problems so long as the Republicans promise to try their darndest to institutionalize self-declared "krischun" moral superiority to their chosen pariahs. Voting for this bill, no matter how necessary and how right the additional amendment regarding DADT was, would have constituted an abandonment of their manipulation of their useful idiot base.
Why are these morons in ongress wasting money discussing this. I really don't care who does what to who or what sexually. None of my business. It is much more important for these idiots to find some spending cuts and they can start with the military. Sicvk of the political theatrics. Get all of them out of there.
Why are people so afraid of homosexuals and lesbians? All they have to say is "no" if one of these folk proposition them. They get the same training in the military and would work just as effectively in war zones as heterosexuals. Americans have become so afraid of anything new in our society. We are regressing instead of progressing as a nation. One should have confidence in himself/herself to not be influenced by others in his/her sexual affiliation. We are way too scared these days. Save the scared feelings for those such as Ben Ladin and other terrorists. We together as a nation - both heterosexuals and homosexuals - an whip the terrorists. We are being petty and unproductive to let things such as "just say no" agendas take up our time.
Republicans good job but game is on
Stop ceding filibusters! Make them earn it. They should have to freeqin' stand there and bloviate. Wear these recalcitrant bastages out! ):\
The story reads DADT stopped the bill, but the dream act had more opposition and the media failed to mention that fact.
No one wants any more amnesty for any illegals. The elites can mow their own yard or pay a citizen a fair price.
The Republican Party Of NO, is the greatest threat this country has ever endured
A most DISGUSTING group to say the least
They are the furthest thing from being Americans
May their Gods send their souls to hell
republicans closed ranks to support bigotry and thwart the will of the overwhelming majority of Americans. the party of HATE strikes again. they are a disgrace to this great country and everything it stands for! these wastes of skin don't deserve a single vote in November. the republican party needs to go the way of the dinosaur.
Maybe we should let gay folks serve openly. Something's not working because we haven't won a war in 65 years. Secret wars to overthrow democratically elected governments in th Middle East and Central America don't count. We're paying all this money for "defense" and we can't even beat a bunch of guys with AK-47s who live in caves? Come on. Have a nice day!
So the senate has thwarted Lady Gaga. Now she can proceed with
