Jobs picture gets worse in 27 states

New York (CNNMoney.com) - The national unemployment rate may have only ticked up slightly in August, but on a state-by-state basis, the jobs picture continues to look a lot more grim in places like Nevada, Michigan and California.

A total of 27 states reported higher unemployment rates in August, nearly double the 14 that saw increases in July, the Labor Department said in its monthly report on state unemployment Tuesday.

While the rate remained at 9.6% for the country as a whole, Nevada, Michigan and California have consistently racked up rates above 12%.

Nevada had the worst rate for the fourth month in a row, at a record high of 14.4%, up from 14.3% in July. Michigan followed with 13.1% unemployment, unchanged from the prior rate, and California was third with a 12.4% rate, an increase from 12.3% in July.

After Kentucky and Georgia joined the list, 13 states had unemployment rates above 10% in August, as opposed to 11 the previous month.

The jobless rates fell in 13 states, as opposed to 18 that saw decreases in July. Ten states and the District of Columbia had no rate change.

North Dakota remained the state with the lowest unemployment, posting a 3.7% rate, followed by South Dakota with 4.5% and Nebraska with 4.6%.

Just where does the outrage for state and local governments enter the picture in the discussion of unemployment?

One of the primary responsibilites of the state and local officials is the economy of the state – and with that in mind, aren't they responsible for building the local/state economies with a diversity and number of businesses and industries?

Why aren't the state officials being held responsible for the problems? I live in Houston, TX and I believe it's a diversity of industries and businesses that have kept our economy from deteriorating further. The state governments have also failed and that should be recognized with equal scrutiny.

  5. GOP Scorched Earth Politics

Well if Republicans like Carly Fiorina stopped outsourcing of millions of American jobs to India/China/Mexico...and stopped creating sheisty tax loopholes to reward corporations for stabbing Americans in the back...maybe the employment picture would improve. She said on camera that 30,000 jobs at HP could be elsewhere and seemed to care less...while she tripled her salary, bought five corporate jets and a yaught.

So what is up with the Dimocrats running around saying the recession is over? Why are we caping 5 year old oil wells in the gulf while at the same time giving Mexico a Billion dollars to drill there? Is this the Economic redistribution of Obama's?

The President blamed the unemployment rise in 27 states to be the fault of George Bush Michael Steele, BP OIl, Fox News, The State of Arizona, and a "vast right wing conspiracy " to make him look human when he stands next to his greek columns.. Obama then went on to take credit for a stable or improving unemployment picture in the other 23 states.

Obama vacations up. Consumer confidence down.
Death toll in Afghanistan up. New intelligence on Osma Bin Laden down

President Teleprompter is on the campaign trail again blaming George Bush and the GOP for everything bad that has happened in the last 50 years.

Gee, we are still awaiting the government to down size and start furloughs, layoffs, pay cuts and loss of benefits. Why is it if you look at the Government, their employees have all the best equipment our money can buy, best pension plans our money can support and best health insurance our money can provide? WE, the people that fund it ALL are unemployed and under employed yet the Local, State and Federal Governments continue to expand and provide yet more entitlements to their "PUBLIC SERVANTS'.

    I for one am done.

I think it is time for the people to start holding these terrible Gov. accountable also for what is going on in there states. It seems these Gov. are putting on Obama because it easy, example the NJ Gov. who lost funding because wrong paper work was sent in. The Gov. of these states need to stand up, this is where we need change....Also these so called Democrates, Obama is a strong man because he has no support from the party. I hear how much he has not done but when can you remember him having the support needed. All a Rep has to do is say the Dem are ramming something down Americas throat and they will back down..

Obamaeconimcs at work. It will get worse. Wait till the tax hikes kick in and the cost of health care on small business. That's a pretty wicked combo. The knock out blow might just be cap and trade. Oh and lets not forget inflation as the cost of goods go up and the value of the dollar goes down. Good Times.

Corporations and employers are holding this country hostage until after the elections. All because they don't want to face regulations geared to protect the economy and shareholders or protect their workforce (e.g. healthcare) all the while they are sitting on $3 Billion of capital that they CAN USE RIGHT NOW TO HIRE!

What a sham. Having been affected by this market I will not be glamored into thinking that the Republicants will do any better.

How many corporations are spending their money on luxury boxes or paying their execs tons of cash. How many have consultants or off-shored their workforce? The headcounts and finances of corporations should be scrutinized and audited. If they are sitting on excesses and spending money on lobbiest or political campaigns they should be taxed and fined!

"obama continues his attempt to tax the small businesses that employ more than 70 percent of the working people and people wonder where are the jobs. Only a liberal would expect a business to expand and add workers when the business does not know what new taxes are coming and a health care deformity getting ready to hammer them with more costs for employees health care. November cannot get here fast enough and we start on 2012."

Actually, Obama is trying to give small business a tax break, just like he did for the middle class this year. And the neoclowns are blocking it. But you won't hear that on Fox "news." Have a nice day!
