Liz Cheney: President 'unwilling' to keep nation safe

Washington (CNN) – Liz Cheney blasted President Barack Obama in a statement Wednesday, saying he seems "unwilling to do what it takes" to protect the country from a terrorist attack.

Cheney released the statement following a report in the Washington Post that quotes journalist Bob Woodward's new book detailing the Obama administration's deliberations over U.S. strategy in Afghanistan.

According to an excerpt, Obama sat down with Woodward last July to discuss the White House's struggle with the threat of terrorist attacks on U.S. soil.

"We can absorb a terrorist attack. We'll do everything we can to prevent it, but even a 9/11, even the biggest attack ever . . . we absorbed it and we are stronger," Obama reportedly said in the interview.

In response, Cheney, the chairman of "Keep America Safe," said that Obama's "comment suggests an alarming fatalism on the part of President Obama and his administration."

"Once again the President seems either unwilling or unable to do what it takes to keep this nation safe. The President owes the American people an explanation," Cheney said.

I guess Liz forgot that the US absorbed a terrorist attack back on September 11 2001. I wonder who was watching our backs then... oh right.. her inept father Dick and his hound dog Dubya. They threw out everything the previous administration gave them that said that Osama Bin Ladin was committed to attacking the US. I can't imagine anyone or any familiy that is more inept and ignorant of current events and recent history. If there are warmer places to go in the afterlife... I can assure you there is an entire level of dedicated to the likes of the Cheney family.

If Liz Cheney thinks she can fight terrorism maybe she should sign up for a tour of duty in Afganistan. OOps too late we didn't ask but we were told.

Liz, sweetheart, it was YOUR FATHER and GW BUSH who ignored the August 6, 2001 Presidential Daily Briefing that explicitly warned of an attack by al Qaeda using airplanes.

It was YOUR FATHER and GW BUSH who refused to listen to the Clinton transition team and their warnings about the dangers of Osama bin Laden.

It was YOUR FATHER and GW BUSH who naively thought invading Iraq would be a cakewalk and that we'd be greeted as liberators – costing us trillions of dollars and over 4,000 dead American military personnel (and 10s of 1000s of American wounded).

If there's anyone in history who seemed unwilling or unable to protect us, it was YOUR FATHER, Liz.

My guess is YOUR FATHER probably thought a terrorist attack by folks from an Arab country would be just the ticket to justify invading Iraq and grabbing more oil.

Please tell me why we care about what this dingbat says. CNN- why give this nobody all this free publicity? What are her credentials (besides being the offspring of a cold, calculating power monger)?

The President merely said what a lot of us are thinking. More lives have been lost in the past 10 years due to military action than any terrorist attack. I submit that we would lose fewer lives–American or otherwise–and spend less money if we scaled back our involvements in Afghanastan and Iraq. Will we still be vulnerable to terrorist attack? You bet–but we're vulnerable now /and/ sacrificing our troops in a quest for "victory." There will never be perfect security–I say stop throwing the lives of our troops away trying to achieve that.

We had enough of the way her father “protected” the US from terrorist attacks! For them it was all a money game. She does not talk about an unjustified war, she does not talk about the American lives lost in that unjustified war, she does not talk about the Iraqi lives lost in the hundreds of thousands, she does not talk about the many displaced, injured, crippled – just so her dad and friends could make money – never mind what it cost the American people in tears, money, suffering.
Now she must have heard about the natural resources found in Afghanistan. What a nice new reason to stay in there! More possibilities for her dad’s friends.
An attack (specially as we see it every day from the conservative right that prevents the US from moving forward) can always happen anywhere. We will have to learn to live with it. The President is doing a great job to try to prevent it. So stop all the misinformation to suggest otherwise!

Liz....take a vacation, a rest, do something to calm your nerves. "Keep America Safe"....lol, your father and Mr. Bush almost brought America to its knees with their war mongering. Enough already! Stop with the scare tactics. Iraq was uncalled for, not to mention illegal, Afghan. was the place to go, but your father and Bush did not focus on Afghan...just gave a pass to Osma's family to get safely out of the country....could it be that they were just good friends of the family???? You are totally pathetic in my opinion...still spinning the same old lies. Plus, your father and Bush did bring American to its knees...totally runied the economy......all Americans are feeling the consequences of giving to corporate america, wars, etc. of the last Republican administration. President Obama inherited the mess left by the past republican administration, and I think he has done a great job in trying to restore America to its previous status....before republicans.

'Cheney, the chairman of "Keep America Safe," said that Obama's "comment suggests an alarming fatalism on the part of President Obama and his administration."'

That's not fatalism lady, that's realism. Not a few months ago a terrorist attack was prevented thanks to a concerned and watchful citizen. It can always happen, either from an international treat or a domestic one. Do the best to prevent, but being ready in case of failure, is all that we can ask and demand.

The fact that he HAS "kept us safe" means nothing to Cheney and her ilk, who actually hope an attack does happen on Obama's watch.

Well who cares what she say's ? She is not a politition or anything. Like her dad kept us all so safe. On whos watch was 9-11. Can anyone keep the us safe. I think not we have been lucky. I do think the president is doing his best.

Wow. Now 9/11 happened on Bush's watch. But Liz Cheney is still insisting the country is less safe. Is this not like a weatherman saying there is a chance of rain in the forecast? Disagreeing with Obama's policies is one thing, that's healthy. But for over two years now the Cheney's and their kind have been continually pushing this whole idea that the US is unsafe under him. You really get the feeling that they are hoping there is an attack on Obama's watch. It would be good for their book sales.

How I wish this woman and her entire family would just fade away. Yes, our nation DID absorb the terrorist attack on 9/11, we joined together as one nation, (for a brief time) prouder than ever to be Americans, determined NOT to let the attack tear us apart as a nation. People wore flag buttons, ribbons, flags flew on vehicles...it brough tears to my eyes to see how we DID come together after the horrific attack on our nation. Sadly, that feeling of unity has totally been lost with the hate speech and divisive language of people like Liz Cheney! Finding something sinister in the President comments is a shameful, yet a perfectly predictable response by her and her FOX "news" group! Shame on these people! If you can't be part of the positive solution to help our country, Liz Cheney(her father) and otherfs-step aside!

When Liz Cheney speaks out on an issue, Americans need to listen.
If we don't pay attention to Obama's handling of our national defense and terrorists' threats–remember that "the system worked" in the hot pants airplane incident for Obama's friends–there could be weeping abd buried teeth.

"In response, Cheney, the chairman of "Keep America Safe," said that Obama's "comment suggests an alarming fatalism on the part of President Obama and his administration."
Fatalism? That's a statement of fact and shows a confidence in the capacity of America to withstand and bounce back from another attack, should it occur.
Liz cheney is a typical racist repug masquerading as a patriotic American. Shehas as much credibility as her evil father is really worth in character........none.

Wow, talk about read between the lines to create your own version of the meaning. Is this something that just runs in the Chaney family?

Liz, if the President was not willing to protect America from terrorists, he would have withdrawn all of our troops in January 2009 and, repealed the immigration policy; opening the flood-gates for all his terrorist colleagues. Give the un-patriotic rhetoric a rest it’s, un-American and unchristian-like to project such disingenuous images; especially for your own gain.

I hate to join the chorus of criticism towards Liz Cheney, but it would seem she has joined the group of Republican Obama bashers and haters which seem to have no ideas of their own and only criticize the president. Terrorism is just like any other crime and we must treat it that way. Terrorism isn't a war that we fight and win some kind of decisive battle. Terrorism, like crime, will web and flow throughout our society and will never end. The sooner we understand as a nation that terrorism is here to stay and we must fight it every day because it will never go away.

Yeah and the last time I checked, 9/11 happened on her chickenhawk father's watch. Not only that, he and the most inept administation in our nation's history lied to the world to get us into a war and then fought it with complete and total incompetence.

Liz Cheney is just another right-wing idiot who should keep her mouth shut.

Well, obviously the problem is elections and politics. The president cannot do anything to secure our southern boarder, without the possibility of angering the hispanic voters, so don't look for it to happen anytime soon.

I like Liz Cheney, but I seriously do not understand how she took from Obama's statement that he wasn't willing to do what it takes to keep America safe. He said- "we'll do whatever we can to prevent it[a terrorist attack]." In other words, he was expressing that he IS willing to whatever it takes. I think his point was about America's resilience – as in, if we do whatever we can, but the wrost still happens, Americans will recover – as they did after 9/11. I'm sure Ms. Chaney thinks her dad and George Bush were willing to do what it takes to keep America safe, but, despite that willingness 9/11 happened.
Sometimes, despite our best desires and efforts, bad things happen. I am not a huge fan of Obama right now, but I have no doubt that he wants to keep the country safe.

That would be the of the daughter of the man who refused to convene the taskforce on Terrorism he headed for 9 months, allowing America to absorb the biggest terrorist attack in human history, then responded with the most massive misallocation of American resources, attacking the wrong targets, neglecting the right ones, and making the work of American anti-terrorism more difficult than it needs to be for decades to come? Love is blind and partisan.

This from the daughter of the man who suggested before 9/11 that American needed a "Pearl Harbor like event" in order to rake in the millions for defense contractors.
