Conyers: Colbert 'pretty profound'

Whitman backtracks from calling Fresno 'awful'

(CNN) – Meg Whitman had some 'splainin' to do.

The California gubernatorial candidate who is locked in a tight a tight race with Democrat Jerry Brown took heat from some proud Fresno residents earlier this week when she inartfully described the central California city as "look[ing] like Detroit – it's awful."

Pelosi on Colbert

Washington (CNN) – Speaker Nancy Pelosi defended comedian Stephen Colbert's testimony before a House Judiciary subcommittee on Friday.

Leaving her weekly press conference, Pelosi told reporters she thought it was appropriate for Colbert to appear as a witness, "He's an American. He comes before the committee. He has a point of view."

CNN Poll: Obama at all time low

(CNN) – President Barack Obama is contending with the lowest approval rating of his 20-month presidency, a new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll finds.

The president's approval rating now stands at 42 percent – an all time low in CNN polling and 8 points lower than where Obama was only three weeks ago. Moreover, 56 percent of all Americans think the president has fallen short of their expectations. (More poll results)

CNN Poll: GOP has big advantage

(CNN) - With a little over a month until Election Day, Congressional Republicans have the clear advantage with voters nationwide, a new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation Poll says.

In a generic ballot matchup, the Republican leads the Democrat by 9 points among likely voters - 53 percent to 44 percent.

GOP dedicates $1 million to W.Va.

Washington (CNN) - National Republicans will invest $1.2 million to run radio and television commercials in West Virginia over the next two weeks as the GOP tries to wrest control of the Senate seat out of Democratic hands.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee seeks to closely tie the Democratic nominee, Gov. Joe Manchin, to President Barack Obama, who is suffering from an approval rating that is below 50 percent. A new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation Poll released Friday shows that Obama's national approval rating is 42 percent.

Colbert on the Hill

Washington (CNN) - There's nothing funny about the issue of migrant farm labor - unless Comedy Central's Stephen Colbert is discussing it.

Colbert, accompanied by a media swarm, sarcastically testified on Capitol Hill Friday about the conditions facing America's undocumented farm workers. The popular host of "The Colbert Report" told members of a House Judiciary subcommittee that he hoped to bring attention to the workers' hardships.

"I certainly hope that my star power can bump this hearing all the way up to C-SPAN 1," he joked.

Poll Watch: Boxer has small advantage in California

(CNN) – California Sen. Barbara Boxer holds a small lead over Republican challenger Carly Fiorina, according to a new poll released Friday.

The Field Poll has the three-term Democrat 6 points ahead of Fiorina among registered voters, 47-41 percent. Boxer's level of support is the same as it was in a Field survey conducted two months ago, while Fiorina's is down 3 points.
