(CNN) – California Sen. Barbara Boxer holds a small lead over Republican challenger Carly Fiorina, according to a new poll released Friday.
The Field Poll has the three-term Democrat 6 points ahead of Fiorina among registered voters, 47-41 percent. Boxer's level of support is the same as it was in a Field survey conducted two months ago, while Fiorina's is down 3 points.
The poll also suggests that much of the support for Fiorina – the former Hewlett-Packard CEO – stems from the anti-incumbent mood that is sweeping the country: close to two-thirds of her backers said their vote should be seen as one against Boxer and not for the Republican businesswoman.
The survey, conducted between September 14-21, interviewed 857 registered voters and caries a sampling error of plus or minus 4.1 percentage points.
A CNN/Time/Opinion Research Corporation survey released two weeks ago showed Boxer with a 48 to 44-percent advantage over Fiorina, a margin that was within the poll's sampling error.
