CNN Poll: Plurality say GOP would do a better job fixing economy

(CNN) - Although more people blame the Republicans than the Democrats for the country's economic problems, a larger number of people think the Republicans are more likely to fix those problems, according to a new national poll.

A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Monday indicates that 41 percent of adult Americans say congressional Republicans are more responsible for the nation's economic problems, with 35 percent saying the Democrats are more to blame, and nearly one in five saying both are equally to blame.

But 47 percent of those questioned say the economic policies of congressional Republicans are more likely to improve economic conditions, with 41 percent saying Democrats in Congress have the better prescriptions, five percent saying both have equally good solutions and five percent saying neither are more likely to improve conditions.

"Independents are the key group on these questions," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "By a five-point margin, they tend to blame the GOP for our current economic woes. But they prefer the GOP over the Democrats by 13 points when asked which party can improve economic conditions."

According to the survey, just under three in ten say that things are going well in the country today, a drop from last autumn but an improvement from late 2008 and early 2009.

The poll indicates that the economy remains overwhelmingly the number-one issue on the public's mind, and unemployment is overwhelmingly the top economic problem cited by most Americans.

"Even among people who describe themselves as Tea Party supporters, unemployment is cited as the number-one problem over the federal budget deficit," Holland says. "Thirty-six percent of Tea Party supporters name unemployment, compared to 31 percent who say the deficit is the top economic issue."

The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll was conducted September 21-23, with 1,010 adult Americans questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points.

Have they forgotten that it was 3 years of Republican rule that took this county to the brink of the cliff and now they want to put these same people back in office? Name me one thing that the Republican Party has ever done for the average American? It was Democrats who gave us 40 hour weeks, stopped child labor, put mine safety into place and the life-line of Social Security, Medicare, Medicade for the destitute. President Obama hs given healthcare to many who would not have it, saved us from total greed by the Credit card companies, baled out the Auto Indistry so all the thousands of workers will still have their jobs plus the thousand in support industries plus saved the pensions of retired workers who would be without pensions and healthcare. The Republican prty tives us uncessary wars, tax breaks for the wealthy, big no-bid contacts for Cheney's Halliburtons, wire taps average citizens, tortures prisioners and ruined our reputation around the world as good and decent people.
