(CNN) - President Obama is pulling no punches when it comes to Fox News, declaring the cable news outlet to be "destructive to [America's] long-term growth."
In a more than 8,000-word interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, Obama compared the cable news channel to papers owned by William Randolph Hearst at the turn of the 20th century that unabashedly pushed the media titan's own political views.
"You had folks like Hearst who used their newspapers very intentionally to promote their viewpoints. I think Fox is part of that tradition – it is part of the tradition that has a very clear, undeniable point of view," Obama told the magazine.
Officials in the Obama White House have long made Fox News a punching bag, launching a full blown offensive last year when aides declared the network to be "opinion journalism masquerading as news." Then-White House Communications Director Anita Dunn said the cable outlet "operates almost as either the research arm or the communications arm of the Republican Party," and top aide Valerie Jarret called Fox "clearly biased."
But the new comments from Obama constitute the president's most direct attack yet on the network owned by business mogul Rupert Murdoch.
Fox News pushes "a point of view that I disagree with. It's a point of view that I think is ultimately destructive for the long-term growth of a country that has a vibrant middle class and is competitive in the world," Obama said.
"But as an economic enterprise, it's been wildly successful. And I suspect that if you ask Mr. Murdoch what his number one concern is, it's that Fox is very successful."
Fox has yet to respond to the president. But during the administration offensive against the network last year, network spokesman Michael Clemente slammed the White House for continuing "to declare war on a news organization instead of focusing on the critical issues that Americans are concerned about."

It is about time. FOX News, the home of Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity, is an affront to every legitimate journalist. And where do they find these pre-Iron Age women with the steel hair? They are setting women's rights back a century. When FOX spokesman Clemente said that the White House should have focused on "critical issues that Americans are concerned about", he failed to recognize the fact that his network has become a major contributor to the toxic political atmosphere in this country. And that atmosphere is blinding the electorate with phony news and scare tactics all designed to bring down this presidency.

Fox News is TABLOID, pure and simple. The danger is that it classifies itself as "news," and sufficient numbers of idiots believe that. However, it's merely a product of the ability of the ignorant masses to think critically – if the public did that, Fox would be about as relevant as the Weekly World News and its Bat Boy stories...
And the President doesn't feel that pushing his own, personal points of view on the American people, (despite majorities being against those views), isn't destructive to the country, but beneficial. But of course, the majority of the American people are uneducated, don't know what's really good for them, and therefore, their view points and opinions don't matter. Sometimes I wonder if the President actually listens to what he is saying.
Where are the President's cries of "unfair" when CNN, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, ABC, and others, pander and fawn all over the progressives and their philosophy? FOX News is such a clearly biased "news" network that I'm not sure how their consciences allow them to claim to be "fair and balanced." They have every right to express their opinions, but the fact that they present these biased opinions as impartial facts is disgusting to me. If they would just openly admit that they are fiercely conservative and present their shows as the partisan programming they are, I would be all for them continuing with business as usual. It's important to have many different points of view available to the American public, but to lie and pretend like you are presenting both sides of the story is irresponsible. They should be ashamed.

Kind of a tough call on whether or not I think the president should be commenting on this. On the one hand, Fox needs to be called on its constant spewing of bullcrap propaganda. On the other hand, the President and his underlings make no mention of MSNBC ever. I am also on the fence about whether bashing Fox has any useful effect. It seems to me that the Fox "news" channel will run it to entrench its sympathetic viewers even more, and thus I think the president's comments will solidify that BS propaganda further in their minds. But then again, I don't think Fox (or MSNBC for that matter) should go unchalleneged in their spewing of propagands. Catch-22.

Things you do not see on Fox are: articles about the tax cut that 95% of Americans received from the stimulus that started in April of 2009. Health reform is not a government takeover. It was the Bush/Cheney white house and a republican congress that made the law that the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy would expire on Jan. 1, 2010. Republicans under Bush doubled the national debt. There are no death panels. No one is going to take away your guns. The three 'socialist programs' that people like are social security, medicare and the VA. Republicans have no plans. I think that it is very unprofessional and petty for the POTUS to make a comment about any major news outlet. By trying to discredit one organization he is in effect endorsing other organizations. I agree that FOX news has more of an agenda to confuse, prosteletize, and influence people rather than report news. I lost all respect for the agency years ago even though I liked several shows. At 41, the politcal cynic in me tells me that 1) you will likely never uncover the whole truth behind ANY politically motivated news story and 2) if you want to get as close to the facts as a mere reader of the news can (ie. you have zero access to the sources and/or politicians involved), then you better get your political news from much more than a single source.
Piublications, be it magazines such as Time and Newsweek, papers such as NY Times, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, etc. and internet news sites such as CNN and Fox (along with their televised siblings) ALL push an agenda whether it be that of the editors in chief, individual journalists or stories that get altered/killed at the direction of the Whitehouse.

In as much as the more liberal news outlets jumped on bashing George W. Bush when he was president, he wholeheartedly welcomed opposing views. One of the things that made America so successful is the open dialog that helps people understand for themselves so that they could develop their own views. To be honest, I really believe Fox News goes out of it's way to present both sides of political discussions. Many of the regular contributors are liberal just as many of them are concervative. I'm a little surprised Obama doesn't see this but even more I'm surprised he made these statements. As an independent, who voted for Obama, this stuff drives me crazy! ALL the other news stations clearly have a left-of-center bias. Fox has a right-of-center bias but by no means more than CNN or any other and the left screams non-stop about it. Independent studies have said Fox has less right bias than the other stations have left, in fact and I wouldn't be surprised if it's true.

Obama's problem with Fox News is that the agency refuses to conform to the mostly all Democratic News agencys out there. The fact is just about every news paper, radio station, and TV News companies are all Democratic and push only the Democratic agenda. Fox news is not "news" and i think even their most avid viewers know that deep down inside. Fox is the ultimate guilty pleasure for right leaning Americans and thus that is how it dominates in the ratings. Its like back in ancient Rome when the public would gather at their ancient stadium and cheer loudly as men would slaughter eachother, this form of entertainment has always been popular in human society in one way or another. These days its more toned down but still the same concept, you have shows like "The worlds most shocking videos" and "jerry springer" and "ultimate fighting" and yes "fox news". Fox news is all about doing what it knows it has to do to excite and scare god fearing conservative Americans and those being scared tune in day after day because they enjoy being scared and fox news instills that in them that if they do not tune in one day that could be the day that the socialist democrats take over the world and you might just miss it.
I'm sorry but I cannot believe the President made this statement. The absence of free media basically allows those in charge to do whatever they want and push information they want you to hear (see China, USSR etc). I'm neither a Republican or a Democrat; I want to know the news and I don't watch Keith Olberman or listen to Limbaugh. In my opinion the media tends to lean left and has given Obama much more of a free pass than Bush ever got. Yet I never heard Bush state the New York Times was destructive to America. Hard to disagree with. Problem is if you only watch Fox news, you don't realize how slanted they can be. Watch other sources. "The Daily Show" is very adept at finding and proving the bias on Fox while admitting they too have a bias. The Daily Show is intenetionally funny though, unlike Beck who is unintentionally funny.

I have to agree with this last part of the story: "network spokesman Michael Clemente slammed the White House for continuing "to declare war on a news organization instead of focusing on the critical issues that Americans are concerned about."" When you start attacking the messenger, no matter who they are, it clearly shows a void in yourself. Focus on the issues, and FOX News will end up on the defensive and having to justify themselves. Instead, the White House is clearly playing defense and the offensive team (as much as I despise them) is looking pretty strong.
I am sick and tired of this guy going after everyone and everything that doesn't agrees with him. Fox Network is only one out of a dozen other news network. He's calling out Fox and let alone the likes of CNN, MSNBC, and CBS? Fox news may be pushing social conservatives point of views and fiscal constraints, but they certainly don't go after Democrats personally. However, I have seen MSNBC and CBS go after Republican politicians personnally. Goes out and call the Tea Party racists, dumb, ill informed and other nasty names. Where is his "fairness" in calling out these other networks?

We all know this. Fox News is so well known for being bias they don't even try to hide it anymore. They clearly push a conservative view on all issues. I wouldn't have a problem if this was the extent of it, MSNBC has a very liberal view and not nearly as many people complain. My problem with Fox is they continually paractice unethical editing practices which paints stories in the light they want them to be viewed in. I know this goes on to some extent with every news organization but in regards to Fox, its gotten out of hand.

It is very ironic that the Obama Administration calls Fox News "clearly biased, when the day-to-day rhetoric of the mainstream media (CBS, ABC, CNN, NBC) is to provide the American Public with only one side of the story . . . "the liberal left". I agree that much of what is portrayed as "NEWS" is really just sensationalized journalism filled with opinion and is very subjective. Fox news and regular fox news viewers believe most of the media has a "liberal bias" and so they are attempting to "balance" this percieved liberal bias with their conservative bias. The problem is that anyone who exclusively watches their network will end up recieving a very skewed view of the news resulting in anything but a balanced view point. Its why they love to say "fair and balanced" in their minds its a dig at the rest of the "liberal media" who can't dare accuse them of being unbiased as they would shed light on their own bias. I am conservative but I never watch fox or visit their news website...I get most of my news from CNN. He believes they are destructive because they are reporting facts on his agenda, instead of the message they want sent out to the American public. The administration wants every reporter to be like NBC who reports information that is based on opinion and not fact. FOX reports factual data on items like healthcare and the economy. They have asked the White House over and over to prove them wrong and they haven't been able to do it. They are "destructive" to his agenda, but not to America as a whole. We need people to question "historical" legislation if it is going to change the way America operates. Every piece of legislation needs to be looked at under a microscope because laws are never repealed, they only add more. I watch some of Fox News and I watch CNN regularly. The shows I watch on Fox, "Special Report" and "The O'Reilly Factor" are, although having a conservative slant, really pretty fair. I find CNN to have a somewhat liberal slant although relatively balanced. On the other hand, I find MSNBC for the most part to be a liberal propaganda machine. Only the "Morning Joe" show has anything reasonably approaching balance. The evening shows don't even attempt to have any balance. I fault all of the media for never giving any exposure to centrist views. It is always liberal vs. conservative on television. Perhaps this is one of the reasons there is so much political rancor in this country and it is becoming increasingly unwatchable.
Finally! I have been waiting for someone to point out this basic fact regarding the propaganda machine that is Fox "News". This statement by the President needs to be repeated and defended by the rest of the MSM over and over and over. Quit allowing the lies and politically biased distortions that Fox spews to go unchallenged. The most dangerous threat to our nation is FOX NEWS, in my opinion.
I'm not saying that Fox News is perfectly neutral. It's not and it caters to individuals on the right side of the political spectrum. But Fox News is successful because it counterbalances the left wing news from MSNBC and CNN. Well, let's be honest. the very term "Fox News" is an oxymoron. What bothers me isn't that they represent a certain political view (virtually all news agencies do); what bothers me is that they consider their abortive coverage to be news at all. For facts, it is one of the very worse information sources I have ever seen. That said, fighting with any media company is a certain way to look foolish. They say better to keep your mouth closed, and be thought a fool, than to open it, and prove them right. Too late; our president has been looking nothing but foolish from day one.
What about MSNBC? NYT? NPR? The President fails to mention outlets that spew and support his view of America. The issue is that Fox is very successful at attracting viewers where the progressive outlets are not. I for one think 24 hours news (regardless of perspective) will continue to cause our political discourse to spiral out of control. Where else can Michael Moore or Ann Coulter get a national stage for 30+ minutes? They certainly wouldn't get it in a newspaper or during a 30 minute nightly network news show.
