GOP is holding tax cuts 'hostage,' Axelrod says

Washington (CNN) – Senior presidential aide David Axelrod blasted out an e-mail to supporters on Thursday blaming Republicans for the county's current fiscal woes and blasting them for a devising "cynical accounting trick" to have the Bush tax cuts expire in January.

Echoing a recent White House refrain, he applauds President Barack Obama in the e-mail for "fighting for the middle class."

In doing so, Axelrod joins the chorus of senior Democrats now playing both offense and defense at the same time against Republicans in the face of what is shaping up to be a difficult midterm election for Democrats.

The e-mail appears to underscore a message Democrats hope will appeal to disaffected middle income voters: not only is the Democratic party trying to fix problems that Republicans created, but voters should re-elect Democrats or face more of those problems. Axelrod ends his missive by pounding this idea home, saying, "We simply cannot afford to go back to their failed policies."

His appeal comes at a time when the White House has proposed ending the Bush-era tax cuts for families with incomes above $250,000 per year. Obama argued at a campaign stop in Iowa Wednesday that extending the whole package of tax cuts merely "puts off hard problems."

Republicans, meanwhile, contend that raising taxes on anyone will hamper an already sluggish economic recovery.

The GOP is "holding these tax cuts for the middle class hostage, demanding that we also lift the cap and extend the breaks to millionaires and billionaires," Axelrod says in the e-mail.

Democrats are facing what could turn out to be a Republican takeover of Congress, as well as the loss of a number of governors mansions in November.

A congressional lesson. All you need in the Senate is for 41 members to create a filibuster. This means that even if the Democrats have a 59 member majority, if all the Republicans decide to filibuster a bill (which they have done more than 100 times in the last two years), the bill does not go up for debate. This is a lesson for those who keep harping about the Democratic majority. 41 Republicans saying no makes their majority irrelevant. They would need more than 60 members to block a filibuster, which they do not have. Please read about the workings of Congress before spouting nonsense about majorities, which many does not seem to understand!

I have been so confused by the reaction of people to President Obama, let's see he has been in office only less than 2 years and people expect miracles in this amount of time come on be REALISTIC!!! The mess the country is in is due to Clinton's policies and George Bush. Not Obama. How come no one complains that George Bush did not secure funding for 2 wars, this is why the country's debt is out of control. And then don't forget about all the company's that have set up in China and other countries, this means no one is paying into Social Security or other taxes. In 2009 people paid LESS taxes than in any other year. Maybe people should listen to various news programs and not strictly FOX!!!

  7. Randolph Carter (the real one), I'm no expert, but...

Only 3% of small business owners make over 250k/yr. The teapublicans are full of horse-pucky as usual. You can create all the low-paying, no-benefit service jobs you want but when you outsource and let wages stagnate for 30 years in the name of ever increasing corporate profit, nobody can afford to buy the cheap made-in-China junk that you're selling. Our economy runs on consumer spending, not the crumbs that trickle down from the rich. Have a nice day!

America is full of immigrants. Without immigrants, Americans will be nowhere in every field. So, dont be hating immigrants, be a little bit thankful without whose help, america would not have been a superpower.

Do you honestly believe that making over a $150,000 is rich? Do you not have a mortgage, children in college, bills to pay, rising medical and other insurance expenses, loss of funds in retirement accounts? This was a political move by the Democrats to avoid election questions regarding taxes. Do not blame Republicans for the failure to extend the Bush Tax Cuts. Why is this Administration trying so hard to destroy those who have worked so hard to be productive? Not accepting Government Entitlements, paying taxes, and being responsible for personal debts is not enough. This President is determined to take it all away from hard-working Americans to give it to those who choose not to.

  15. The reality is...

Axelrod still doesn't realize that the people have caught on to his spin? It was Pelosi who cast the deciding vote to send the House home (to Campaign instead of taking care of OUR business!) instead of voting to extend the tax cuts for all taxpayers.

To "True American" – They are not outsourcing all the jobs but they may if the unions don't stop their greedy nonsense. BTW, if you owned a company would you rather hire employees who demand you pay them what they want or employees who are grateful for what you offer???? After all, the employee can look elsewhere for employment or even start his/her own business.
