Most Tea Partiers call America a Christian nation, study finds

(CNN) - Members of the Tea Party movement tend to be Christian conservatives, not libertarians, and are more likely than even white evangelical Christians to say the United States is a Christian nation, a detailed new study has found.

More than half of self-identified Tea Party members say America is a Christian nation, while just over four out of 10 white evangelicals believe that – the same as the proportion of the general population that says so.

The only thing "christian" about the United States is that we have the words "In God We Trust" on our money.

It is amazing that a Jew was able to call himself son of god and fool the whole world. Very funny!

This is news? Is this supposed to be something BAD? It IS the history of our country. I'm very surprised the percentage is so low actually. The result of years and years of attack from the left to destroy and remove religion in this country.

I guess CNN wouldn't have a problem if more than half the people said the US was (or should be) a muslim country.

While there are currently a majority of people in the country are some demonination of Christian, it doesn't mean that the county is a Christian country. We have many different religious groups like Jews, Muslims, Hindus and those that don't believe. We are a country that had founders that believed in a "creator" but weren't willing to enforce that on everyone.

Just a note to all, there is no such thing as Judeo-Christian values because Jews and Christians have different religious beliefs. Jews and Christians may have similar values, but they are not the same.

Duh! Thank you for stating the obvious CNN.
The Tea Party is the brain child of Fox news and the Republican party.
    Their beliefs are republican beliefs...
They are two sides of the same coin.
They are nothing but a minority with a mega phone called Fox 'News' Channel

I thought this was settled law from the case of Quayle V Murphy Brown.

Anyway we were a Christian nation until the hate mongering homophobic knuckle draggers came along. As Alex de Toqueville said " America is great because Ameica is good and if she ceases to be good she shall cease to be great" We are putting our nation at risk by standing by why the Tea Party yakes over.......get out and vote America show them they are not the "majority " they claim.

When over 90% of the popukation of a particular nation calls themselves Christians than I guess common sense tells you that it is a christian nation. I realizee the Radical anti American Imam Obama following Libs hate this fact, but it's the truth. If Imam Obama had his way we would be a Muslim Nation, but luckily his party is about to get crushed in a month from now and he is definitely "one and done" so we really don't have to worry about it. So Libs, how is the weather in The Land of Oz these days? Pet Unicorns doing well?

We were founded as a Christian nation that tolerated other faiths...anyone who is literate and not a God-hating idealogue can see that. But we have moves away from Christian principles over the past 50 years And are suffering the consequences.

The TP wants America to be a CHRISTIAN NATION!!! That's why they are running around yelling they want their country BACK!! A country that was originally stolen from the Indians and BUILD by SLAVES and now consist of almost EVERY religion in the WORLD!!!

America is no longer about Christianity ONLY – PERIOD!! Get over it!!! Get used to it!!! Get around it!! Or Get LOST and move!!! Furthermore, if you are so CHRISTIAN and feel we should all be Christians – then pray for us!!!!!!!!

This is T'SAH from Virginia and I approve this message – but if the Tea Party has their way, they will NOT (Nor my impersonator, which is the reason why I am being forced to include this message)!!!

They believe that there is no such separation, and they won't accept any argument otherwise- texas has already moved to take thomas jefferson out of history class in order to help push this fallicious argument.

This is apparently just an attempt at defining the Tea Partiers as something other than what they are: a grassroots group of citizens voicing the opinion that a smaller more efficient federal government is better for America. Other than being consistent with the Republican Party economic platform, this is, as it turns out all you really need to understand about the movement.

A significant segment of people who attach themselves to the conservative and/or Republican movement are the first to call people who don't support them un-American or not patriotic. Unfortunately, what these people fail to realize is that some of their beliefs about how government should run are in contradiction to the tradition of liberal Western democracy founded in the ideals of the Enlightenment. For example, I come from a religious tradition that is evangelical in nature and while they are generally kind and compassionate people they have a firm conviction that God's order is for America to be run by a system of Bible based laws. These types of belief systems cannot be reconciled to the underpinnings of a liberal democracy unless democracy is considered to be bounded by the limits of some interpretation or definition of Christian faith which is a death knell for the whole concept of what concepts such as reason, individual liberty and even religious freedom itself.
