(CNN) – Sen. Lisa Murkowski, the Alaska Republican who lost her primary challenge and is now running as a write-in candidate, is up with a new ad featuring an endorsement from the late Sen. Ted Stevens.
Stevens, who died in a plane crash last summer, is seen telling voters, "I trust Lisa and her commitment to keep fighting for us. She is working for Alaska every single day. We need Lisa and the seniority she has earned now, more than ever."
In the 60-second spot, Stevens' daughter, Sue Covich, says the endorsement was set to run only days after Stevens died when the plane he was traveling in crashed into the Alaska wilderness in August.
"Some Alaskans don't know that my father made a campaign commercial for Lisa that was scheduled to run just days after we lost him," says Covich. "Putting our family before her campaign, Lisa made certain the ad did not air out of respect for Dad and our family.
Murkowski lost a primary challenge from Tea Party-backed candidate Joe Miller in late August. She later decided to run as a write-in candidate, telling CNN, "I am listening to my constituents…I'm going to give them a choice."
Recent polls suggest Miller and Murkowski are neck-and-neck with the Democratic candidate, Scott McAdams, close behind.
