(CNN) - In the weekly Republican address Indiana Rep. Mike Pence urged House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to call Congress back into session, a little more than two weeks before the midterm elections.
"Washington DC doesn't tax too little, Washington DC spends too much. Raising taxes on job creators won't create jobs," Pence said. "Speaker Nancy Pelosi should call Congress back into session immediately and allow an up-or down-vote on preserving all current tax rates."
Pence was referring to the extension of the so-called Bush-era tax cuts that Congress failed to address before leaving Washington last month. The House GOP Conference chairman also equated the plight of the 33 Chilean miners trapped beneath the ground for 69 days to the U.S. economy.
"This week, the world rejoiced as 33 miners emerged safely from months of dark captivity in a deep Chilean min," Pence said. "Today, many Americans feel trapped under the weight of historic spending and government mandates."
But in his weekly address, President Obama blamed Republicans for voting to reward those who "create jobs and profits overseas."
"We should give tax breaks to American small businesses and manufacturers," Obama said. "We should reward the people who are helping us lead in the industries of the future."
Both messages acknowledged the tough times Americans are facing and promised the economic climate would get better.
"The prosperity of the American people is more important than the political fortunes of any politician or any political party," Pence said.
"We should reward the people who are helping lead in the industries of the future," the president said. "That's how we'll put our people back to work and lead the global economy."
These people are crazy(not to mention the ADD patients who will vote for them even though it's not in their best interest).
They hate the stimulus(money spent right here in america that was used as an effort to HELP AMERICAN'S,
But they love the debt to china,
They love illegal wars that cost AMERICAN LIVES.
America has become so backwards it's ridiculous(Cheney,Wolfowitz,Armey,Pickett)all are supporting tea-party candidates for a reason and it's not to make life better for everyday people
If you vote them in we will soon be living like that movie V for Vendetta.
If you work for a living every vote for them is a vote for your boss and YOUR pay to become even more unbalanced.
Why aren't the wealthy creating jobs right now. Their taxes are low. Why didn't they in the bushie years? They had low taxes then. Because the wealthy take that money and stash it in foreign banks and don't even pay taxes on it then. You and I have been carrying the full load in this country and it's time for the wealthy to pony up for a change.
Really? Calling back the Congress so that it can add another 3.8 trillion dollars, the price tag of extending the Bush tax cuts, to the national debt? Is this the Republican idea of fiscal conservatism, adding more debt when the government is already running a trillion dollar deficit?
To everyone who call himself or herself a con (man or woman): what do you propose? Do we get rid of the minimum wage, and all safety, financial and consumer regulations, so that it will be safe for corporations to make their billions here in America, and paying their executives millions, while allowing the occasional Wall Street meltdowns, banking crises, and Gulf oil spill?
Oh, please! This is just political theater and Pence knows it.
hugo..it is you sir that is mis-informed you have been drinking the Fox News koolaid. most companies don't even pay taxed after the loopholes, tax breaks and subsidies. exxon mobil actually got a tax refund last year.. ( please do some homework and look it up) No the issue is that they can go to China and India and Indonesia and pay people $50.00 or less a week with no benifits or worker safety regulations and make tons of profits and yes pay no tax...( again they don't really pay much here) its about labor that is why all these right wingers that are running as ex-business people want to do away with minimum wage.
Why would they go back to work? They've already worked more than their alloted 40 hours this year. Give me a break! Work for their money? That's why we have global warming. If the politicians would close their mouths for a while, the temperatures would drop by at least 10 degrees. Hey, maybe Al Gore can check that out with a government grant.
Why is Nancy Pelosi scurrying away from town before there can be an up or down vote on extending the Bush tax cuts? Perhaps it's because she fears the result. Now the estate tax is virtually eliminated this year and happy are those who die in 2010, or rather, happy are their heirs. Why should money earned and taxed during one's lifetime be taxed again upon one's death? Because the government wants your money to play around with. Oh, you don't have any? Well, then you don't care until "Uncle Sam" does reach down into the pockets of even the "middle class" to fill the government purse. Nancy Pelosi wants that money, all the money she can get by watching the Bush tax cuts expire but she knows to vote to end these cuts will not be a popular move so she spares her fellow democrats any pain before the elections. Yes, call them back and let's hear where they stand.
Why do you continue to moderate my comments? They are not nearly so rude as many others?
Answer to Duke: Does the word "Racism" mean anything to you? You seem to ignore all the people of every color who supported the Civil Rights Movement. You seem to ignore all the people of good will who have done their part to improve conditions of people of color. You seem to feel the election is just about grabbing everything you can get and not doing the best for our Country. I said OUR COUNTRY. Think it over.
Why should she??? All you Republicans would vote NO anyway....
Washington does both. We can cut spending but our tax base is far too low! Before medicare and all the supposed entitlements out taxrates were much higher.
History does not support the thought that lower taxes spur hiring or business growth. the wealthy do not sit home and say -GEe, I just got a tax cut of 5% , Let's go hire someone! successful business witl hire when they NEED people, not because thye got a tax break. If your product isn't selling, you don't need more employees- this is common sense 101
Please, somebody show me the data that lowering taxes creates jobs! WHERE IS IT??? It's nowehere, because it doesn't happen!
Yes, you can check these data!
For the past four decades we've had tax cut after tax cut! And yet, unemployment kept jumping up and down. Under Reagan's tax cuts we've had two recessions. Clinton's raising of taxes somehow didn't result in a sudden job loss. Under Bush Jr. we've had two recession again, despite his tax cuts.
Meanwhile the rich keep getting richer off these tax cuts. Are you so naive to think that if we give even more money to the rich they'lll magically start creating jobs, despite the fact that they haven't done so for the past four decades?
Check the data! Tax cuts don't work! The rich don't care about creating more jobs. They have kept the money before, they'll just keep it again!
Where were these concerned Republican politicians when American jobs were being exported overseas? Where were they as healthcare costs spiraled into the stratosphere and insurance and pharmaceuticals companies ran roughshod over hard working Americans? And it’s a sure bet they aren’t thinking about the lower and middle class now when it comes to extending the tax cuts. I’m a Republican, but I don’t suffer from the memory loss that seems to be affecting so many others these days. Whatever they are, the Republicans certainly aren’t saviors for those of us that actually have to work for a living.
The GOBbaggers are a desparate bunch pretending their pathetic excuse for a party had new ideas beyond their cultish devotion to to the disproven "ideas" of tax cuts for the ultrarich, deregulation of unfair trade. Elecing them would be like hiring a pedophile to run a preschool or the captain of the Titanic to run a cruise ship.
Ancient Texan: read a political science book, would you! President Bush "suggested"??? Does VETO mean anything to you...if he was so against Fannie and Freddie, why didnt he use the veto? All legislation is signed or vetoed by the POTUS!!!
