Angle in hot water for 'Asian' comment

(CNN) – A spokesman for Senate nominee Sharron Angle is downplaying the Nevada Republican's remarks to a group of Hispanic school children Monday during which she proclaimed, "Some of you look a little more Asian to me."

"Sharron is making the point that this country is a melting pot, and you cannot judge people based on stereotypes or the way they look," Jarrod Agen, a spokesman for Angle, told CNN.

The comments, video of which was posted by the Las Vegas Sun, came in response to a student's question asking the GOP Senate candidate why her television ads appear to portray all illegal immigrants as Latino.

"I think that you're misinterpreting those commercials. I'm not sure that those are Latinos in that commercial. What it is, is a fence and there are people coming across that fence. What we know is that our northern border is where the terrorists came through," said Angle in response.

The Tea Party-backed candidate, who is dead even in the polls with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, continued, "I don't know that all of you are Latino. Some of you look a little more Asian to me. I don't know that. What we know, what we know about ourselves is that we are a melting pot in this country. My grandchildren are evidence of that. I'm evidence of that."

Making up a quarter of Nevada's population, Hispanic voters are expected to play a crucial role in the Senate race and constitute a demographic that Reid has heavily targeted by touting his efforts at immigration reform in the Senate.

Meanwhile, Angle has hit hard at the issue of illegal immigration, running several ads that portray Reid and Senate Democrats as too weak on the issue.

Angle took down a recent ad that featured a photo of three Mexican men with the words "Illegal Aliens" scrawled below after the image's photographer came forward to say the three men were not illegal aliens but instead were photographed in Mexico.

Full statement Angle campaign spokesman Jarrod Agen:

"This is a low blow from Harry Reid. Sharron is making the point that this country is a melting pot and you cannot judge people based on stereotypes or the way they look. When she was in the legislature, a reporter mistakenly referred to Sharron as being of Asian decent. Again, making the point to the students that you can't judge people based on first glance.

"Harry Reid on the other hand says that Hispanics should not get to choose which party they are in. He doesn't think Hispanics should be allowed to be Republicans. Harry is desperate, he's losing, and he's trying to play racial politics.

"Sharron has said several times before that illegal immigration is not about race, it is about the rule of law in this country. It would be a misinterpretation to think that one group of people should be singled out. The issue is that we must stop illegal immigration by securing our borders, both northern and southern, and by enforcing our immigration laws. Harry Reid does not want to end illegal immigration, he is pro-amnesty, he is against the border fence, and he voted to give social security benefits to illegal immigrants

"Just about every week Harry Reid tries to pull Sharron's comments out of context and attack her, but she's steadily been gaining support and we have pulled ahead as we enter early voting. Harry's going to lose in two weeks, he knows it, and he'll do anything in the coming days to cause controversy."

Yeah, Right! It's one thing when a former New York Guinea like me can be confused for a local in Western Scotland. It's an entirely different thing when a politico insults one ethnic group by saying they look like another! This woman has no place in politics. I am frankly surprised that she has managed to be in the Nevada Senate as long as she has, given her record (or lack thereof).

People of Nevada, come on. Angle? Really?

I mean, Harry Reid is no walk in the park, but this woman is a couple of biscuits short of picnic basket.

"Sharron is making the point that this country is a melting pot, and you cannot judge people based on stereotypes or the way they look" Nice try, but she wouldn't make that point in a million lifetimes. A racist is a racist is a racist.

Angle's as loony as politicians come and would make a god-awful senator (joining others already in office) but this non-issue about the "Asian" comment is overwrought. There's enough to beat her up about than this overly-PC, manufactured gotcha.

What it is, is a fence and there are people coming across that fence. What we know is that our northern border is where the terrorists came through," said Angle in response....."

Keep backtracking...pretty obvious that isn't what she meant. This person is clueless. She throws the "fear factor" and still gets it wrong. Pathetic. What was she doing speaking at a high school anyway...

Is this woman that stupid? Or does she plan her remarks to keep her name in the spotlight? What ever the reason, it's troublesome.

This lady is out of her mind. Is the pool of candidates so poor that this is consider a viable person to represent us in the Senate? Is there not any other Republican in Nevada that is coherent and mentally sane o run for office? How can anyone vote for her?

I cannot even conceive the idea that someone would vote this lady. Reid is not angel, but at least he seems to have it a bit more together.

Oh! What a mess! "I don't know if all of you are Latinos ..." Nice way of suggesting that all Latinos are illegal aliens, but perhaps not all illegal aliens are Latinos. And if she really wants to go with that "terrorists from the North!!!!" bit, then why aren't there Canadians in her ads? When grade-school kids get you stumped, perhaps you should hang it up?

This lady sure knows how to put her foot in it, she bashed hispanics, asians, and Canada all in one question, to think people would actually vote for this fruitcake says a lot about our country.

This post has nothing to do with Angle, but what has that handsome man from Mass. Scott Brown, done to change the way Washington works? Wasn't he endorsed by the Tea Party to go to Washington and get things done? Well he has been there about 10 months and it looks to me as the same old, same old rhetoric. Get on the ball Mr. Brown and get things done!

How is saying that someone looks more Asian making the point that the country is an melting pot? The statement from the spokesperson doesn't do anything to help the situation at all.
