Mobsters, crooks and bailouts, oh my!

(CNN) - Mobster and crook references aside, the Illinois Senate debate between Democrat Alexi Giannoulias and Republican Mark Kirk covered substantive policy issues, from their positions on the bank bailouts to the effectiveness of the stimulus bill.

The war in Afghanistan and the events leading up to the Iraq war were also a key issue in the debate, which was held at the Chicago Club in downtown Chicago.

Soldier at Miller campaign incident didn't have permission to be there

(CNN) – An active-duty soldier involved in a highly publicized altercation with a reporter had not requested permission from his superiors to be part of a security team at an event for an Alaska Senate candidate where the incident took place, a base spokesman said Wednesday.

Fort Richardson spokesman Sgt. Maj. Derrick Crawford said that Spc. Tyler Ellingboe, 22, had not had not requested permission from any chain of command to work outside his regular Army duties.

CNN 100: Vulnerable GOP seats down to single digits

Washington (CNN) - The CNN 100, a list of the nation's 100 most vulnerable House races, has been updated to reflect the latest developments in the battle to control the chamber next Tuesday.

The list is now comprised of 91 Democratic seats, 16 of which are open seats and another 75 with incumbents running for re-election. There are 9 Republican seats in the CNN 100, down from 10. This includes 4 open seats and 5 incumbent races.

Gingrich at Liberty University: Obama's a secular socialist

(CNN) – Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who's mulling a run for the White House, appeared Wednesday at the school founded by Jerry Falwell to address students and to meet with key conservative Christian activists from across the country.

In a speech to students at Liberty University on Wednesday morning, Gingrich said that Americans needed to fight back against secular socialists, including President Barack Obama, at home and against Islamic radicals around the world.

Strickland: Kasich 'sees victory slipping through his fingers'

Canton, Ohio (CNN) - At a crowded rally inside a Canton union hall Wednesday, a fired-up Gov. Ted Strickland (D-Ohio) said his Republican challenger John Kasich is flailing wildly as his once solid lead in the governor's race has collapsed.

Kasich has taken a particularly harsh tone toward Democrats during a three-day statewide bus tour with other members of the GOP ticket, accusing unnamed opponents of attacking him with "negative, lying smearing stuff" and plotting to steal the election.

Foursquare announces an "I Voted" badge

New York (CNN)–When pulling the lever on Election Day, Foursquare users can "check in" and receive a special badge the company announced on Wednesday.

Foursquare, a location-based mobile application that lets users "check in" to venues and compete for virtual badges, unveiled their "I Voted" badge.

Cash flows in 2010 cycle

(CNN) - A record four billion dollars will be spent on the midterm elections this year, according to an estimate by the Center for Responsive Politics, a non partisan watchdog group.

That new eye popping figure dwarfs the $2.85 billion spent in the last midterm election in 2006, and the $1.61 billion little more than a decade ago in 1998.

CNN/Time Poll: Angle 49, Reid 45 in Nevada

(CNN) - With six days to go until the midterm elections, a new poll in the most high profile Senate battle in the country indicates Republican challenger Sharron Angle holds a four point advantage over Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

According to a CNN/Time/Opinion Research Corporation poll released Wednesday, 49 percent of likely voters in Nevada are backing Angle, who enjoys strong support from many in the Tea Party movement, with 45 percent supporting Reid, the top Democrat in the Senate who's bidding for a fifth term in the chamber. Angle's four point margin is within the poll's sampling error, making it a neck and neck race.
