(CNN) - Lamar Alexander, the third-ranking Republican in the Senate, will make a campaign appearance Friday in Delaware with GOP Senate candidate Christine O'Donnell, CNN has learned.
The Tennessee senator is the first member of the Senate Republican leadership to appear with O'Donnell, according to an Alexander aide.
O'Donnell stunned and disappointed the GOP establishment when she beat Rep. Mike Castle in the Republican primary. Castle was considered a sure winner in the general election, but O'Donnell now trails her Democratic opponent Chris Coons by double digits.
So why campaign for her now?
Alexander "is known in the caucus for getting along with people from the right and left and he's always working to get everyone on the same page," said the Alexander aide.
"Christine O'Donnell's election will help provide a badly needed check and balance on a runaway federal government that has given us too much spending, too many taxes, too much debt, and too many Washington takeovers," Alexander said in a statement posted in the endorsements section of O'Donnell's campaign web site.
At the 9am event at Buckley's Restaurant in Centerville, Alexander will thank O'Donnell's volunteers and supporters and he will hold a press conference.

O'Donnell damaged herself without any help so in some "magical" way Alexander is going to put his head on O'Donnell's body and make it spin around. If I were Alexander's wife, I'd kick his you know what.
And with a straight face, really? That'd be pretty tough to pull off! O'Donnell is now just a pawn for the GOP to support to get their win; nothing more. They are reduced to no ethics whatsover. Too many taxes, he says? I work for a small business and we are benefiting from the HIRE Act. Also, my income taxes were the lowest they've been in 2 yrs. I earn less than $80K. Where is this tax fear coming from? Oh, Fox News says it's so! How quick the GOP points the finger at the Dems; should look in the mirror to see who really created the economic fiasco we are slowly pulling out of. Had McCain won, we'd have had a depression for sure.

Yes, Senator Alexander will hold a press conference, as the other idiot, the real candidate for DE's Senate seat, will either retreat to her "secure location" (a.k.a. Bunker), or be standing behind Alexander as he answers reporter's questions. No doubt though, she won't chime in one ioda, but rather stand there silently or be seen hitting one her aides when a tough questions is presented to the Senator that she feels is to ahrd or unfair! What a joke...
Ok, the fact that the major Republican Senate establishment hasn't been out campaigning for O'Donnell from the MOMENT she won the primary should make the Republican establishment ashamed of itself. Had they been front and center supporting the candidate that THE PEOPLE CHOSE, she would be at least neck-and-neck in the polls. This is exactly why the Tea Party candidates are doing so well, because they are SHUNNING the establishment in DC, many of whom will find themselves out of a job in 2012 as the Conservative ascendancy continues, and the RINOs are flushed out of the undergrowth.
Question - I thought you needed smarts to be an elected leader - street smarts or school smarts, or something. So how does someone like O'Donnell even get onto a ballot? Who agrees with her that her candidacy is a good idea? Who is brave enough to tell her "lady, forget it"? How do these people get so far? OK, the Shrub did, but he had daddy and puppeteers. WHo is behind Christine? We know the GOP pushed Sarah onto McCain, and he could not refuse?
