(CNN) – A new survey suggests New York State Democrats in the top three races are holding steady to win big with voters on Election Day.

The Siena Research Institute survey of likely voters released Sunday confirms what other polls have suggested the past few days– that the New York Democrats running for the Senate and the governor's mansion continue to hold comfortable leads over their opponents ahead of Tuesday's elections.

“I think all these Washington pundits are going to be surprised,” Rep. Chris Van Hollen said on “Fox News Sunday.” “I believe Democrats are going to hold onto the House.”

Steele’s election expectations

(CNN) - The man in charge of electing Republicans across the country tried to lower expectations Sunday, saying if Republicans win 37 seats in the House and remain in the minority, it will still be a success for the party.

Michael Steele, Chairman of the Republican National Committee (RNC), appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday and said he would also consider a 39-seat pick-up, where Republicans would become the majority, a victory.

Brennan says cargo plane explosives could detonate on their own

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Explosive devices in cargo packages addressed to Chicago, Illinois, destinations appear to have been designed to detonate on their own, without someone having to set them off, the top White House counterterrorism official told CNN on Sunday.

John Brennan, President Barack Obama's assistant for homeland security and counterterrorism, said on CNN's "State of the Union" program that the sophisticated explosives could have been intended to blow up the air cargo planes carrying them, as suspected by British authorities.

"It is my understanding that these devices did not need somebody to detonate them," Brennan said, adding that U.S. authorities continued to investigate.

CNN Poll: Large advantage for GOP as election nears

Washington (CNN) –Two days before the midterm elections, a new national poll indicates that Republicans have a 10-point lead over the Democrats in a crucial indicator in the battle for control of Congress.

The GOP's 10 point advantage in the "generic ballot" question in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation national survey released Sunday is slightly larger than the seven point advantage Republican candidates had on the eve of the 1994 midterms, when the party last took control of Congress from the Democrats.

"But unlike 1994, when polls indicated the public had a positive view of the Republican party, a majority of Americans now do not have a favorable view of the GOP," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.
