(CNN) - During an interview on "The Situation Room," comedian Bill Maher revealed to Wolf Blitzer that actor Zach Galifianakis did not really smoke marijuana on his show.
"If it was a real joint, Wolf, I would have smoked it…I think it was cloves or something," Maher said, adding "Zach's crazy, he's not that crazy."
Galifianakis was a guest on Maher's HBO talk show, "Real Time with Bill Maher" on Friday night. In an act that generated much internet buzz over the weekend, Galifianakis lit up what appeared to be a joint during a discussion of Proposition 19, the California ballot measure that could legalize marijuana for personal use.
Maher expressed his support for Prop 19 and suggested that marijuana legalization could be an effective wedge issue for Democrats nationwide in the same way that gay marriage was for Republicans in 2004. "This is something that gets young people, who don't come out in great numbers, into the voting booth," he said.
Maher defended comments he made on the same show, when he expressed alarm over news that Mohammed was the year's most popular baby name in Great Britain.
"I don't feel like I have to apologize for being a proud Westerner...someone who believes in the values that Western people believe in that a lot of the Muslim world does not," he said. He laughingly agreed that he would have been fired if he had made the same comments on NPR.
Despite the public's antipathy towards Washington, Maher argued that the current Congress achieved more than its battered reputation would suggest. He accused Fox News of "filling people with misinformation" on issues such as the stimulus program. "All they hear is that the stimulus bill was some sort of socialist program to run up the debt; almost half the stimulus program was tax cuts, and people just don't seem to be able to get this information in their head."
He laid some of the blame for the Democrats' electoral predicament on President Obama, arguing that he has not been effective enough at touting his administration's achievements. "He should have been out there more telling people, bragging about what he and his administration and the Democratic Congress have done for them. They did things that actually made their lives better."
Maher made a prediction about Delaware Senate candidate, Christine O'Donnell's future if her bid for election is unsuccessful tomorrow. "Unemployment is next for her. She will go from whence she came. She didn't have a job before and she probably will not have a job after." To Blitzer's suggestion that she might become a television news pundit, Maher remarked, "I'm surprised we ascribe the word 'pundit' to someone who knows so little."
Oh cmon! You know it was a real joint
Who cares if it was a joint? Weed is less harmful than alcohol, and that's a scientifically proven medical fact. Prohibition must be repealed, this isn't the 20's any more, get over it old people.
Another show that gives us more insight into Washington than the lame stream media who only gives us every fart that comes out of the half term governor, WHO IS NOT A POLITICIAN, and her twitter and facebook page.
Maher has guests from both sides. Real lefties and the nutsos from the right.
