Pelosi is running for Minority Leader amid calls for her to step down

Washington (CNN) - Outgoing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Friday she will run for minority leader, even as some moderate and conservative Democrats have said she should step aside. Pelosi made the announcement on Twitter: "Driven by the urgency of creating jobs & protecting #hcr, #wsr, Social Security & Medicare, I am running for Dem Leader."

She further explained her decision in a statement.

"Our work is far from finished. As a result of Tuesday's election, the role of Democrats in the 112th Congress will change, but our commitment to serving the American people will not," Pelosi said in a statement. "Many of our colleagues have called with their recommendations on how to continue our fight for the middle class, and have encouraged me to run for House Democratic Leader."

Moderate Democratic Rep. Dan Boren of Oklahoma was the latest to urge Pelosi to step aside and not run for House Minority Leader.

"I cannot in good conscience support Nancy Pelosi as our leader," Boren told CNN in a telephone interview, "I intend to support a more conservative Democrat, a Democratic alternative."

"I think most people in the Democratic caucus are giving her room to make the room to retire, to leave gracefully. But, you know, I think it is important to see over the next 24-48 hours if we will see an alternative emerge," Boren said.

Boren's public pressure for Pelosi to go follows similar comments from North Carolina's Democratic Rep Heath Schuler and Utah's Democratic Rep. Jim Matheson who have also said they would prefer a new, more centrist Democratic leader.

"I think based on the outcome of this election, we should all acknowledge what the American people said, and they are looking for change. And I think when you as a political party suffer losses of historic proportions, it makes sense to change things up," Matheson told CNN in a telephone interview." "Therefore I don't think she should be running for leader."

Still, after Tuesday's losses, moderate Democrats are now a very small part of the Democratic caucus. The bigger question, according to multiple Democratic sources, is what Pelosi's fellow progressives want her to do.

Americans United for Change, a progressive political organization, sent an email notice to its members Friday morning urging Pelosi to stay.

The notice asks people to send a personal note to Speaker Pelosi.

"Make sure she knows that we will support her," said the email.

"If she runs, she will win," said one senior Democratic source.

Still, while Pelosi's tireless fundraising has built reservoir of support among Democratic lawmakers, several Democratic sources said there are a number of progressive Democrats who do not want her to run.

Meanwhile, Kentucky Democratic Rep. John Yarmuth, who had been a staunch supporter of Pelosi's, told a television station in his home state he wants Pelosi to step down as Democratic leader.

"I know that there is some thought that Nancy Pelosi may stay around," Yarmuth said Thursday, "As good a leader as she has been, I don't think she's the right leader to take us

Pelosi has no credibility and selecting her would be very detrimental to working with the Republican majority in order to get things done. Leonard Boswell would be a much better selection.

Outgoing Speaker Pelosi continues to live in a dream world. The people voted to remove those governing from the far left from office. If Obama cares at all about getting re-elected in '12 he'll have a discussion with her directly. However given how far removed she is from reality, I don't think anything will make her reconsider. Power to her means everything...

All of you complainers can't do any better besides that she has a JOB like someone of you so why should she be unemployed because you think she can't rebound.
If she resigns/quits she'll be no different than Sarah Palin loved by some hated by others... earn your own daily bread...

wow 7 if they keep their behavior up, you won`t have a party! americans are tired of this and as far as our ignorance and bigotry go.... well, thank you for so obviously showing yours. a great policy for government is compromise where you do in fact have to go to the other side on occasion and that hasn`t happened in too long which is why the election went the way it did!

Good now we get to see how she does as the Minority leader of the house. This should only cause for more Republicans to be elected.

Nacy Pelosi took a stand and didn't back down, so she is considered a witch or the B-word. John boehner took a stand and didn't back down, so he is energized and fired up. What is the difference between the two? Bull Doo Doo!!!

I see that the Nancy Pelosi Fan Club is out in force: "Pelosi has done a wonderful job"; "she has GUTS..." The only people who should be defending her are the Republicans who did the impossible and won as well as they did.
For all you Pelosi apologists, you are merely playing into the hands of the Repubicans who could not even pass gas on their own.

I think Pelosi should stay. She's one democrat that has some guts. The democratic party doesn't need the republicans to succeed in running her out of town. She's been target because she's a woman democrat from SanFrancisco. The republicans do not disrespect their congresswomen although Michelle Bachman doesn't deserve any .

I read Dutch/db/SinCA comments above heralding Pelosi, and I get sincerely sad as to how possibly our country can be duped or ever actually want such a base lack of any intelligence or common sense to represent their lives, kids, future and creation of MORE jobs?! Cause, there are not more jobs, unless you have not watched the news for the last 2+ years?!

It is sad, as the intellectual smarts has left out country – in spades! Look at her (Pelosi's) eyes when she talks! It is at best insincere, hollow, and rhetoric only. There at no time has quality, actual solutions, or any analytical basis - it is always all emotional. How can anyone with an IQ over 10 vote for control of the third most powerful job in the world – only on emotion?

Don't get me wrong, to be that clearly entitled and unintelligent, and get to what is the third most powerful seat of power on this earth, is quite an achievement. But no matter your political beliefs, if you do not ever base your thinking and decisions on actual results (and do not lie to yourself – "the results affecting you directly") and solutions that person created that truly/actually WORKED. I you do not, and just defend the lies you keep believing (for what reason – just to save your pride from earlier belief? Really anyone thinks like this with so much USA/world future on the line?) well then, I am glad that you will also not be seeing the truth to the total lack of solutions by Pelosi or Obama, and instead subscribe to the false drivel that distracts the emotional sheep that never quantify results or actions, and just want to "feel better" when they watch the news or vote.

God bless America. God bless the poor souls who vote emotion only, and steer our great country to only being sheep with low IQ's, zero solutions, and warm and fuzzy lies that are driving us down, eliminating jobs and small businesses (who love hire everyone when they can survive!) directly by their negative actions (cause Pelosi/Obama never HAD to work), and remove the future of hope and hard work for all children's futures, and the generations of Americans yet to dream the American dream.

Pelosi is the "greatest idiot" the United States of America has had ;lead the House. Sad it is in my lifetime, and she is from my bloody state as well!

She is a big part why the Dems lost so badly. Princess Pelosi does not get it. If Obama does not get rid of Reid and Pelosi he will lose in 2012. This is one arrogant witch.
