Pelosi is running for Minority Leader amid calls for her to step down

Washington (CNN) - Outgoing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Friday she will run for minority leader, even as some moderate and conservative Democrats have said she should step aside. Pelosi made the announcement on Twitter: "Driven by the urgency of creating jobs & protecting #hcr, #wsr, Social Security & Medicare, I am running for Dem Leader."

She further explained her decision in a statement.

"Our work is far from finished. As a result of Tuesday's election, the role of Democrats in the 112th Congress will change, but our commitment to serving the American people will not," Pelosi said in a statement. "Many of our colleagues have called with their recommendations on how to continue our fight for the middle class, and have encouraged me to run for House Democratic Leader."

Moderate Democratic Rep. Dan Boren of Oklahoma was the latest to urge Pelosi to step aside and not run for House Minority Leader.

"I cannot in good conscience support Nancy Pelosi as our leader," Boren told CNN in a telephone interview, "I intend to support a more conservative Democrat, a Democratic alternative."

"I think most people in the Democratic caucus are giving her room to make the room to retire, to leave gracefully. But, you know, I think it is important to see over the next 24-48 hours if we will see an alternative emerge," Boren said.

Boren's public pressure for Pelosi to go follows similar comments from North Carolina's Democratic Rep Heath Schuler and Utah's Democratic Rep. Jim Matheson who have also said they would prefer a new, more centrist Democratic leader.

"I think based on the outcome of this election, we should all acknowledge what the American people said, and they are looking for change. And I think when you as a political party suffer losses of historic proportions, it makes sense to change things up," Matheson told CNN in a telephone interview." "Therefore I don't think she should be running for leader."

Still, after Tuesday's losses, moderate Democrats are now a very small part of the Democratic caucus. The bigger question, according to multiple Democratic sources, is what Pelosi's fellow progressives want her to do.

Americans United for Change, a progressive political organization, sent an email notice to its members Friday morning urging Pelosi to stay.

The notice asks people to send a personal note to Speaker Pelosi.

"Make sure she knows that we will support her," said the email.

"If she runs, she will win," said one senior Democratic source.

Still, while Pelosi's tireless fundraising has built reservoir of support among Democratic lawmakers, several Democratic sources said there are a number of progressive Democrats who do not want her to run.

Meanwhile, Kentucky Democratic Rep. John Yarmuth, who had been a staunch supporter of Pelosi's, told a television station in his home state he wants Pelosi to step down as Democratic leader.

"I know that there is some thought that Nancy Pelosi may stay around," Yarmuth said Thursday, "As good a leader as she has been, I don't think she's the right leader to take us

Actually Dutch/Bad Newz you are showing YOUR ignorance if you can;'t see what the majority of America sees. You're just as blind as she is.

She undermined Obama from the start and is arguably the primary reason the Dems collapsed. After all, she was the Speaker of the House. Seems she spoke too much! There is no questioning the good she has done over the years in different arena's, but its time for her to go. Now to Mr. Bohnner: Lets see just how much of a "real American" you and your chest thumping party are. Work with the President, not against him. Anything less, and you are no better.

Let her stay and she will insure Obama is a one term president. If Obama is sincere about working together with the Republicians, he should urge Pelosi to step aside. If Tuesday's landslide is not a wake up call to Obama, Pelosi and Reid to start listening to the american people then the Democarts are really in the dark and deserve what they get in 2012.

Pelosi should leave while she can still do so with a certain degree of dignity. If dignity is not an issus with her, then go for minority leader and get crushed under the heavy boots of the new powers. I voted for Obama (shudder, shudder) in hopes of a "change". I, like may other citizens, wanted change in the American government, not for them to change America. Between Pelosi and Obama there has been a "charge" full speed ahead with bill after bill of what THEY wanted, not what the American citizens wanted. Pelosi wants the government to ride in your back pocket, and control your entire life. She needs to get out of our pockets and stop trying to grab onto our coat tails. Resign now!!!

Ugh...this woman needs to get a clue. The American people dislike her and it seems most of her party does as well. Maybe she should focus on being a normal rep. for awhile and get out of the spotlight. All I see is a woman with gaul to think if she stays in the spotlight long enough she will have a chance at the presidency sooner or later.

I think the American people spoke very clearly Tuesday night and rejected her agenda so I think she should listen and just go home. Health care reform was crammed down our throats and if democrats vote her in as minority leader it just shows how out of touch they are with the desires of the American people. I don't see where she's doing anybody any good by doing this except "herself" of course

Please run and get elected. There are still over 150 plus Democrats left to be defeated in 2012. Please, please, please let her have the leadership again. Second verse same as the first!

Dutch.. I do have to say that your tirade against conservative democrats... demanding they leave the party is certainly bigotry in it's purest form! How dare you suggest that a political party in this great nation should be exclusive of anyone?!?!!! The democratic party has very conservative roots. The conservatives are the ones that decided it was a good idea to include even extremists like yourself in the party. So who in the Hell are you to suggest that anyone should be excluded?? You sure have some good drugs coursing through your veins! Let's face it.. the whole democratic party actually has roots in bigotry.. the KKK was founded by and staunchly supported by prominent members of the democratic party. The Republican party vigorously opposed and fought the KKK movement. Go check your history and see how nasty your party really is!!!

If the Republicans hate her so much, it must mean that she stands up to them and should retain leadership. A strong leadership under a lame duck session is more important than a majority session!

Just goes to show that not only is Pelosi out of touch with reality, her constituents, but her own party....she is ignorant and evil with a bent towards destroying the American fabric and way of life as it has been. Pelosi would sell her soul, if she had one, to get this country to be dependent on the government...wake up people, the government does NOT create or pay for jobs.

Nancy accept responsibility and listen to the people. I do not really care if democrats or republicans or the independents or whatever are the majority, in reality it is the citizens who are the majority. The good thing that has come about in recent years is that people have learn to be involved in and active in our common welfare and affairs.. It really is an era of change for our nation. Now if big brother would just learn it's lesson we just might be able to stop alot of nonsense that is undermining our recovery. It is sad and pathetic how when the people speak the entrenched government and corporate america r turn a deaf ear and totally ignore our wishes just to keep their greedy, ruthless stranglehold choking the neck of hard, honest working Americans. This abuse of power is driving the anger that we see today. The good thing it is this anger that will keep the momentum's of the people going. It is ridiculous to the point know that different divisions of the government are suing each other. it is really sad the abuses of power and the disfunctionality of our system to rectify itself. Again power is the peoples! We do not want thigs shoved at us. We want our rights that are afforded us under the consitution. We want them at any cost. We are patriotic and we want what is ours. We fight and pray for it daily. Give us what is ours if you have any sense of patriotism as we do instead of the reprehensible greed that you constantly display.

"The bigger question, according to multiple Democratic sources, is what Pelosi's fellow progressives want her to do".

Who said she was a "progressive"??? Liberal does not necessarily equal progressive. You can be progressive and not be liberal, even though the liberal press disagrees with that. The fact is, she's arrogant and could care less about what the 'little people' want from government. She knows best what we all need. Just ask her. It's past time for her to go. As in go away. Retire already. Besides, the very mention of her name has the same effect on me as Exlax.
