Washington (CNN) - House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer blasted Congressional Republicans on Thursday for forcing the White House to postpone a bipartisan post-election meeting with President Obama, which the White House had announced was scheduled for Thursday.
"I can never remember an instance when President Bush asked me or a Democrat in leadership to come down to meet with him that we did not accommodate our schedules to that request. I think that is not only respectful of the president of the United States, but it also furthers the ability to solve problems confronting our country," Hoyer said during a session with reporters on Capitol Hill.
Hoyer said he hasn't met with House Republican Leaders since the election, but said, "I am hopeful we will find common ground with our Republican colleagues, who have been given by the American people the authority to set the agenda."
The Maryland Democrat was elected Wednesday to serve as Democratic Whip, the No. 2 leadership position, when Democrats become the minority party in the new Congress.
One reporter asked Hoyer if the House Democratic leadership lineup was too old, with its top leaders - Nancy Pelosi, Hoyer and Jim Clyburn - all over 70, while GOP leaders are younger. Hoyer used the question to take a jab at the House GOP leadership for lacking diversity. "I want you to look at the Democratic leadership and then I want you to a look at the Republican leadership. Then I want you to look at America. You tell me which body is representative of our country."
The top three Republicans in the House - John Boehner, Eric Cantor, and Kevin McCarthy - are all white males. Democrat Clyburn is African-American.
Hoyer argued Republicans have repeatedly refused to work with Democrats on major legislation, but he told reporters both parties have a responsibility to get beyond the election year mindset.
"Both parties need to extricate themselves from this two-year psychology that we have been put into, understandably, by a two-year election cycle. We cannot afford, either the Republicans or the Democrats, to think in a two-year cycle. The challenges confronting our country demand a longer term vision."
Looking back, Hoyer admitted that Democrats made a mistake by not stressing to the public what Congress had done to address the economy. "Health care took a long time and they forgot that the first thing we dealt with was jobs."
"I can never remember an instance when President Bush asked me or a Democrat in leadership to come down to meet with him that we did not accommodate our schedules to that request.
Different times, different man...
What else would expect from the "DO NOTHING" republicans? They have refused to work with President Obama from day one! Most republicans cannot stand the thought that a non-white is serving in the White House. It seems that the republicans have returned to their Klan roots. GOD HELP AMERICA!
The republicans have no respect for Obama and he is not forcing them to have any. This thing they have for him goes way beyond political parties. Those rat bastards on the Republican side are having a hard time hiding their true colors when it comes to how they treat this President. They think strutting their house boy Steele out front hides the true reason for their hatred of Obama. Anyone with clear vision can see the difference in the disdain for Obama compared to other Presidents.
The extension should lapse. If the 2% that benefit the most from the tax cut are true their country instead of their wallet, a cut in pay is not insignificant. This more true when one considers that 2% are afforded numerous tax ride offs. For example, designated a room within the home as office and dinner meeting designate as so provide the 2% with ample means to recoup their losses. Why should the 2% get a tax cut and benefit from tax ride offs? To sustain their ride offs, there must be a business. If the true consumer–the middle to low income wage earner–are to make purchases to maintain business, they must have discretionary income. So, to the 2% take a pay cut as the rest of america has and help save the country. After all, you'll get yours in terms of ride offs.
You mean to tell me that Republicans are disrespecting our President? Well gosh, that hasn't happened since...last week? Lets face it, Republicans have no respect for President Obama and I wish the President would stop treating them like adults and start laying down the rules. He needs to tell them, if you work against me, I'm reaching even farther left for answers. These Republicans need a lesson on how to play nice with others. That goes double for the Tea Party.
The Supremacist are too above this fellow to dare meet with him. Even if it is about the American people. These crooks know that they have the Republican owned media (CNN & Fox) in their pockets. They continue to lie to the American people and the president think that people are smart enough to figure out the truth. Well, some are and some aren't. Liars don't really want to belive the truth.

True BUT Clyburn is in a made up position! All to appease the CBC!!!
Sadly. he is absolutely right. But hang on, when this bunch of hot air balloons, full of ego and misguided self-importance
start bouncing around the House bumping into each other, someone will stick a pin in them, and you had better be out
of the way. They will fly around that room and bim, bam, boom, float to the floor and lie there wondering what the h-ll
happened. I can hardly wait.
I too found the RethugliKKKlans postponement of their meeting with the President classless and disrespectful. Yet let us not kid ourselves: this is the way the RethugliKKKlans have been treating THIS President since day ONE.
They had Steele in place to mouth off and diminish Obama just in case the rest of them were unable to get away with it. However, as soon as Wilson yelled out "YOU LIE" to the President in Congress and in full view of the country and the world, the GObP gave up all and any semblance of respect towards THIS President. Steele became a useless tool that they no longer needed because the country allowed the GObP to show their contempt of THIS President without need of a shield.
I cannot recall any other President Democrat or Republican been subjected to this level of animosity and disrespect.
It is embarrassing and bewildering to see it occur over and over again, sans consequences for the offending Party, with THIS President.
YOU connect the dots.....
What is the big hurry about meeting with the Republicans? He hasn't met with them for two years! It was all "We won." and "Sit in the back of the bus." and lock them out of meetings and tell them to get lost and on and on. Maybe Obozo needs to understand just who is driving the bus now! And it ain't HIM!! Thank GOD!!!
Boehner and his republicans are just being childishly immature. They try to snub the president with delaying tactics because they know that actually sitting down, having a mature discussion they'd have nothing to say, no ideas, no plans, nothing.
These GOP idiots ether say "No" or postpone....o.k, They do not have any clue....what they meant, what they say...and what they do....it is American Karma......that's it...
Might I also add that this whole disrespectful behaviour towards THIS President since day ONE has been seeping into the consciousness of the country; and in particular into the consciousness that did NOT want him as their President: the GObP, the Teatards, et al.
For two years now the GObP has been inculcating, relentlessly, a mentalityamongst the populace that is rising from the sub-conscious to the surface. And that would be that it is OK not to treat THIS President with respect; that it is OK to shoot down anything THIS President proposes, even if the GObP endorsed it previously, and even if objecting to implementation would hurt the country.
And the reason why it is alright to do this is because it would ultimately serve to ensure that Obama be a one-term President. NOTHING else matters to the RethugliKKKLans. Not the country. Not it's people and their unemployment. Not folks losing their homes, or their children being uninsured.
Nothing is more important to them than to get THIS man out of THEIR HOUSE.
Once again, the party of "no" puts up road blocks and refuses to play nice with others. They may have won the House, but they still do not have the Senate or the White House. How far do they really think they're going to get over the next 2 years in advancing their agenda to roll back all the changes? They need to re-examine their agenda.
The party of “NO” is continuing to “work for the people” taking as promised, the country back. Thank you for the update CNN!
president obama, you are wasting your time with these nuckleheads. they have nothing to offer, or no clue how they will govern. all they want to do is to obstruct, since that is what they do best. how sad for america when idiots are elected.
