Washington (CNN) - The Republican senator who opposes ratification this year of a new nuclear arms treaty with Russia made clear Sunday that politics, not policy, is the main issue.
Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl told NBC's "Meet the Press" program that the Senate won't have enough time in December's "lame-duck" session to properly consider the so-called START Treaty with Russia.

Of course its politics. This has been a bipartisan issue for the last 25 years. Its in the country's national security interest to ratify the treaty. The Republicans usually the champions of all things "national security" are holding up issues like DADT and START because they want to the President fail...or they want to extract major political concessions from the President in exchange for something that the Bush Administration would have called detractors of "traitors" for opposing.
Its pathetic and unAmerican. Stop playing politics with war, the military, and important global issues like nuclear proliferation. The Longer the START Treaty goes unsigned, the easier it is for our enemies in al-Qaeda to get a nuclear weapon. Stop playing politics with the safety of our Great Nation.
How far will the Republicans go to destroy President Obama? And will they destroy all of us in the process? That's what scares me. They will vote against anything that will help move this country forward, out of an economic disaster of their creation, just to make sure the President doesn't get creditfor anything positive or helpful. And we voted to give them back control of the House? How stupid have we become to do this to ourselves? And how far will we take this stupidity?
Politics is always in play, all the time.Just like it was when many democrats wouldn't support the surge in Iraq that helped.
Good, slow down and actually read something before voting on it. With the Obama administration everything has to be done yesterday, so no one will understand what just happened until later.
Kyl has been actively delaying debate and passage of the START Treaty for over a year. Because if Obama is for "it", the GOP leadership will be against "it", no matter what "it" happens to be.
Just another example of Republicans promoting partisan politics over global security and our nation's welfare.
Since this is all about politics and it is clear that some of these Senators care more about being in power than what is best for the American people, we should start boycotting the places where they are from. Let's start with Arizona because they continue to send these idiots to congress.
Since the Republicans won the house:
-unemployment extensions cut for families.
-Republicans holding up the START treaty
-Talks of war(with N. Korea)
-Back to the general feeling we are in danger, and no longer calm.
Enjoying your tea duped voters? (The President wasn't doing a bad job after all, perhaps).
@Jim from Va; Have you seen a combat operation the Republicans WEREN'T willing to send YOUR kids in to?
You sure as heck didn't see Meaghan McCain or Mary Cheney with an M-16 in their hands.
I can't believe the Repubs will rather see the nation security at risk than to allow this treaty to be sign ALLLLLLLLL because they want to stop Obama at every cost.......THESE PEOPLE ARE SICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
