(CNN) – Joe Scarborough, the MSNBC host and former conservative congressman from Florida, says its time for members of his party to get off the sidelines and express their true feelings about Sarah Palin.
"Republicans have a problem. The most-talked-about figure in the GOP is a reality show star who cannot be elected," Scarborough writes in a column for Politico out Tuesday. "And yet the same leaders who fret that Sarah Palin could devastate their party in 2012 are too scared to say in public what they all complain about in private."
Scarborough, who recently returned to air after MSNBC suspended him for making a series of political contributions he did not disclose to the network, also took aim at the former Alaska governor for even considering a White House bid.
"What man or mouse with a fully functioning human brain and a résumé as thin as Palin's would flirt with a presidential run? It makes the political biography of Barack Obama look more like Winston Churchill's," writes Scarborough, later adding that Palin is pursuing a "dopey dream."
The comments come several days after Palin herself stoked speculation she is considering a run for president, with the 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee saying in several media interviews that she is conferring with friends and families about the prospect and thinks she could beat President Obama.
But Scarborough writes that prospect is completely unfounded and faults Palin for comparing her resume, which now includes starring in a TLC reality show, to that of Ronald Reagan, the onetime Hollywood actor. Scarborough also isn't pleased Palin painted President George H.W. Bush and wife Barbara in a recent interview as out-of-touch "blue bloods."
"Perhaps her anger was understandable," a sarcastic Scarborough says. "After all, these disconnected "blue bloods" had nothing in their backgrounds that could ever make them understand "real America" like a former governor from Alaska who quit in the middle of her first term and then got rich.
"I suppose Palin's harsh dismissal of this great man is more understandable after one reads her biography and realizes that, like Bush, she accomplished a great deal in her early 20s. Who wouldn't agree that finishing third in the Miss Alaska beauty contest is every bit as treacherous as risking your life in military combat?" continued Scarborough, in reference to the elder Bush's tenure as combat pilot in World War II.
Palin has yet to respond to the comments.
WOW! I never thought the day would come that I'd actually want to give Joe Scarborough a hug, but that day has arrived!! FINALLY, someone talking some truth and sense about that dolt, Palin. Thank you, Joe!!! Palin supporters – please read, and heed, Joe's remarks!!!
Joe, Joe. Your party dumbed down to below ground level. They pandered to the uneducated by fear mongering, swiftboating, and outright lies. You're represented by the likes of Limbaugh and Beck. And none of you spoke up until it all started working just a little better than you anticipated. I've heard you use the phrase "liberal elite" Joe, and just like with Mao, that love of the lowest common denominator- that anti-thought, anti-educated sentiment came back to bite you.
My favorite Republican is Joe.
Hey...Sister Sarah – Stick a sock in it already. You're last year's pop culture sensation, deal with it.
had to correct my comment......all republicans aren't stupid....they know this woman is a trainwreck waiting to happen and you will continue to see a joint effort to get rid of her in the next year or so because they know its a complete joke that she could ever win the presidency...this woman is not only ignorant but she is proud of it...
But she's sorta cute and sprinkles her facile discourse with lots of patriotic catch-phrases. What more could you want?
NEVER thought I would say this, but GO JOE!!
Republican "leaders" don't have the guts to do what's right (blocking START, against unemployed Americans in need, cowering from quitter Palin, etc.). The only thing these GOPs shamelessly do is play childish politics with American lives.
Not the party of Reagan anymore.
what, finally a little shot of common sense?
Palin has yet to respond to the comments. But of course we know that she will and that you will be right on top of it...right, CNN?
Joe I love it. Finally a Rebulbican who is speaking the truth about Palin.
Sarah Palin will say and do anything to keep herself in the public eye. And the republicans are as sick of this opportunist , now, as the majority of the rest of the country. Fox and CNN seem to be the only ones who are keeping her spewing and craziness alive. To Fox it is good TV goodness knows why CNN is tagging along. She has no knowledge of how to do anything but try to make money.
Everyone knows that she will not be even one of the final candidates for the nomination of president but the MSM continues to give her face time on the air and on TV. Instead of concentrating on how to fix the economy, how to get things done in this country everything is being wasted on this money grubbing nutcake.
I'm betting she will respond to Joe with her usual grovel. She is a political train wreck and anyone who calls her out on that, is in her crosshairs.
Boy is Joe gonna get it from Sarah 'cause she don't like the truth being spoken/printed about her. I don't like Joe much but in this instance, he's spot on correct in relation to her.
About time someone showed some coglioni and told it like it is about bear a cuda.
Joe is right. The empress has no clothes.
As time goes on, more and more republicans will echo what scarborough said. If you're preference is to see obama not elected to a 2nd term, then get palin out of the picture. The dems are salivating at the thought of her running in 2012. It would be a lock for obama, or whoever runs on the democratic ticket, to win the white house. While it appears that palin has substantial support, its much closer to the truth to suggest that she is massively unpopular with voters. The reason? The media shines a spotlight on the extremeist nut jobs who adore her, because its entertaining to observe them in all their bizarre stupidity. Who you're not hearing from on a day to day basis is the mass majority of sane people who think it laughable that an imbecile like palin could be president of the united states.
I have new found respect for Scarborough! I couldn't have said it better myself! Way to go Joe!
sort of like the pharisees ... the people know what they want and the pharisees don't want a backlash from their base. I wonder how many back room meetings there have been and how many pieces of silver they will offer.
Joe who?!?! It looks like he's trying to capitalize on her soaring popularity for his own 15 minutes. Good luck with that. Has-been politicians try to become comedians and has-been comedians try to become politicians.
As a Democrat, I never thought I would say this, but Scarborough really hit it out of the park. I could not have said it any better when it comes to Palin.
It is profoundly dangerous when we allow the medocrity and self absorbed screwball antics of a Palin take the helm of this Nation. The real problem repubs have right now is they are a party of gutless leaders. They are actually afraid of Palin...thats how far out of touch they have gotten themselves.
I call Sarah Palin as a Political Entertainer. The louder she talks, the more people watch her, and the more money she makes. If she announces that she won't run for President she may become irrelevant.
The trouble with the Republicans is that not only can't they stop Sarah Palin, they can't stop Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck for generating the conservative platform.
I remember Ronald Reagan. I laughed at Ronald Reagan. You, my friend, are no Ronald Reagan.
Finally! Simple & to the point. Regan had a "big tent", Palin has a pup-tent. When the GOP brings back leaders that unite people, rather than preachy uber-conservatives, they will find more of us coming back in support.
Oh and comment she will. She responds to every little comment or snipped she hears or sees like a 9th grader. Scarborough is right in every aspect. She's got to go.
