BREAKING on 'don't ask, don't tell'

(CNN) - Marine Commandant Gen. James Amos told the Senate Armed Services Committee Friday that he does not support a repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

There is "strong potential for disruption at the small unit level" of combat units if the "don't ask, don't tell" policy is repealed, Gen. Amos told the committee Friday. Allowing openly gay and lesbian Marines to serve would "no doubt divert leadership attention away from an almost singular focus of preparing units for combat."

Wrong. I served and we had 4 gay people in my 60 man division. Not a single problem.

I'm not sure what's "breaking" about the Marine Commandant General's recommendation. He's said that all along. (I'm listening to the hearing right now, and that was no surprise.) Once we got past John McCain's grumpy & defensive opening statement, it's very enlightening.

Gays serve now and have been serving since the begining of time.

Why do gays have to lie about who they are and the bigots can remain openly fearful and hateful?
Let the bigots lie about who they are and keep their moral cancer in "their closet" – the bigots are nasty little people who don't deserve to serve.

As ex NAVY I can tell you we know who is gay . If you repeal don't ask , all you do is create a protected class of soldier. THAT destroys the unit.

Look up the surveys from the past. They also said the same about women serving and blacks serving in integrated units. Even tough the surveys came back that many troops didn't want integrated unit, we did it anyway because it was the right thing to do and everything turned out fine.

Does that mean when the regulation is changed, the Marines will drag their collective feet? Or will Gen. Amos do what he is supposed to do and make the policy work?

of course, he forgets the many gay and lesbian service members who have served in silence over the many years of military service. And those serving now.

The MARINES are like that!!! They are so TOUGH to the point where they don't want to realize that maybe HALF of them are GAY!!! And why would this HURT? The GAYS are not going to PARADE all through the barracks CELEBRATING!! I am sure they will KEEP IT TO THEMSELVES!!!

I think this COMMANDER should get over it. Because if this keeps up – I think all of the gays in the armed forces are going to ADMIT IT anyway. What kind of message would that send if suddenly half of your troops are GONE because they admitted they were GAY!!??? Jeez!

McCain and others claim “Not now – not when there is a war going on!” Jeez, we are always AT WAR – when will that ever change? It seems the USA ends one; finish another; and then start another! A Neverending Story!!

Another Homophobe that probably teaches homophobia to our young men and women. He needs to be checked very carefully for Unconstitutional behavior. McCain is off his Aricept (for alzheimer's) and is just flopping in the wind. What an ebarassment to himself and others his age. He should never have been voted back in. He needs major medical care in a facility somewhere. He's gone downhill after losing to Bush, and drastically after losing to a half white man. What a shame.

It is unfortunate that the military has taken a step back to the same mentality they had back in the 50's with the idea of Blacks members serving side by side in the military as they do today with gays. Why would you turn your back on anyone if they are willing to serve their country? It is nothing more than them being homophobic and afraid that gasp this gay person will probably hit on me. Ha do you really think a gay service member is going to hit on someone they work with or gasp check them out in the shower. Grow up already they don't care, let them serve and I can gaurentee that your ranks will be filled again with better people than some of the ones you have now.

  11. John Boehner is the dumbest person to become speaker

It is good to have a homophobe in charge of the marines.

It appears to me that homophobia is alive and well in our military. And its a shame, anyone and everyone who wants to serve should be allowed to do so freely with out any backlash.. The military is it just like a regular job and should follow the same discrimiation rules. Just like with a job they cannot ask your sexual orientation and the cannot deny you the job because of your sexual preference. Further more they cannot "fire" you if they find out you are.

  13. GOP = Greed Over People

How stupid can these people be?

They complain about separate housing, showers, etc.

WTF? They are CURRENTLY showering and sleep next to gay folks, so where is the issue for the repeal???

Yeah, we knew he thought that already. McPampers has been all over him like a flea on a dog's balls.

Amos has his opinion. Good for him. His SUPERIORS also have opinions...and Mullen spent 40 YEARS worknig directly with troops and giving them life and death orders. We also have FACTS provided by the survey which run directly contrary to Amos' opinion, whereas Amos has...his opinion.

It's funny...I really don't remember the Republicans being this outraged and upset and concerned and fighting like cornered badgers about the safety and well-being of our troops and the efficacy of our military efforts when the stories broke about the troops being sent over to Iraq without proper body armor, etc. I guess when you know you're just going to abuse the military to send our young soldiers off to die in pointless, politically-motivated wars of convenience, you might get your priorities confused and wind up more concerned with their spiritual well-being with respect to what a 2,000 year old book says about homosexuality than you are about their physical health and survival.
