Dem likens working with GOP on taxes to negotiating with 'terrorists'

(CNN) - Sen. Robert Menendez said Friday that if the Democratic-controlled Senate agrees to extend all of the Bush-era tax cuts it could be akin to acceding to terrorist demands. Republicans immediately blasted the New Jersey Democrat for his comparison.

Menendez asked at a news conference, "Does the majority not only have a responsibility to get something done but to get something done that makes sense for the country?"

"Do you allow yourself to be held hostage and get something done for the sake of getting something done, when in fact it might be perverse to the ultimate results? It's almost like the question of do you negotiate with terrorists?"

In a statement titled, "Menendez Compares GOP to Terrorists," the office of House Republican Whip Eric Cantor responded, " Um…No Senator, it is not. Not at all."

An aide to Menendez said the senator was talking about how the negotiations are proceeding, not about the Republicans personally.

"It's not surprising that some are eager to take a comment out of context in order to change the subject from the Republican millionaires-first plan," said spokesman Afshin Mohamadi. "The critical point for middle class Americans remains that Republicans have chosen to jeopardize tax cuts for every middle class family in order to guarantee an average tax cut of $104,000 for each millionaire."

I compare Menendez to a financial terrorist!! He takes American money(taxes) and spends more than he takes in on worthless projects and entitlements creating massive debt. That form of terrorism will will devastate America for decades.. Here are two words that you probably do not understand Menendez "CUT SPENDING"!!!!!

Don't give in. Let them expire if necessary. The Republicans designed the plan to expire in 10 years because they knew then that the cuts WEREN"T SUSTAINABLE and that was before the vote to start two wars and Bush's Medicare D plan without any provision for funding. The money will have to be borrowed and will add another 40% to the deficit if allowed to go the full 10 years. Show some guts and let them expire if the Republicans won't agree to the planned cuts to the already overly-rich Americans and the extension of unemployment insurance since their backers in the Chamber have been working with industry to send the jobs that should be here for Americans overseas to increase CEO bonuses. It is hard to go back to work when your job was sent to China.

The Republicans are bent on the destruction of the American way of life for the benefit of their Communist Chinese paymasters. When the Republicans say the word "jobs", they mean how many American jobs can they send overseas. The Republicans are seeking to defund the middle class so American workers will be forced to accept minimal income to survive. Does that make them like terrorists, or just Maoists?

Menendez is totally right. Americans elected the Democrats to restore fairness to the tax system. The wealthy in the country get away with paying very little and reaping the most. Why doesn't the President get behind this?

Call Mitch McConnell and Eric Cantor's office and let them know how much you do not care for the millionares. 104,000 dollars for each millionare? Great! Now they can buy that new Porsche just in taxes alone!! :) I called McConnell's office last night; GOD that felt good.

I still can't get back up on my feet. I live with my father. And the Republicans do not care for me, but they sure do care about Steve Jobs.

Nice talk, as usual, from our whacked out loony lib Dem friends. And just how did those whacked out loony lib Dems deal with Republicans (and the American people for that matter) last year when they rammed Obamacare down our throats – without debate and without considering the will of the American people!?!

NJ – please get rid of this goon.

The Republicans can be and have been called everything in the book, including the exclusive "Party Of No" and rightly so!!! Considering their actions for the last two and a half years and their proclamation to see that our president is a "OneTerm President", I think there is only one name that really fits and should be tattooed on their foreheads..."UN AMERICAN'!!!!!!

Well that's the repgnicants' dirty little secret, isn't it? They've ALWAYS put millionaires and corporate big-wigs' interests over the vast majority of Americans. They wouldn't recognize real democracy if it bit them in the 4zz....

Republicans want to negotiate and debate and it's compared to negotiating with terrorists. Democrats want to negotiate and debate and it's called engaging in bipartisanship. Menendez, you realize you're in a lame duck Congress, emphasis on lame.

Sen. Robert Menendez is a complete disgrace to America. These are the types of irresponsible comments that are making the Democrat Party look foolish and incompetent. America doesn't need any more comedy acts in Washington. We need real leaders who are interested in solving problems. Not those who liken the other party to terrorists simply because he doesn't like what they say. Sen. Menendez should apologize immediately or resign.

Say you make 50,000 or less you would receive a tax cut of 916.00 a year. Divided by 52 weeks that is 17.61 a week.
Do you really feel we should cave to the Republicans for this? Or should we let it all expire and they have to pay their share? I have the chart for you. Please everyone look at this. If we let it expire we will have a lot more revenue from everyone paying taxes and we can support our programs for everyone. I invite you to take a look.

I feel that Republican leaders in particular are actually traitors to the United States and should be brought up on charges of treason. Treason is defined as any action intended to undermine the country and that is exactly what they have done. We all know the penalty for treason, which is exactly what the republicans deserve.

Repubes are the party of NO and the party of special interests, or in a word, THE RICH. Yes, they ARE bringing down the U.S.A. by crippling Obama, by not caring for the middle class, and by willing to keep health insurance a big money maker for a few people. They are a threat to our democratic way of life. A strong, educated middle class is what scares them! No cheap labor! Unions? OMG not that!! Its true, the RICH just dont have enough MONEY! They are the first to call others UNPATRIOTIC, when by their own deeds, are bringing us down

If the Dems don't want "to change the subject from the Republican millionaires-first plan" then don't say something as stupid as comparing those you politically disagree with to murderous terrorists. It's as dumb as calling the President a fascist and/or communist. If you don't like it, don't go and turn around and do it yourself.

how can one man be so flippant and ignorant when his party needs all ducks in a row to get what they are seeking? why are we not hearing more small business owners clamoring for tax cuts for all? they are the ones who take the biggest hit if tax cuts for the only those under $250K are extended.
