The Washington Punch List

With the economy front and center, we're keeping a close eye on Congress and Obama. Stay tuned for updates on what they get done – and what gets punted.

Bush tax cuts

Obama and Republicans are playing chicken. Obama wants to let the tax cuts lapse on the rich. The two sides are talking and a likely deal would involve a temporary extension for everyone. Question: What can Obama get? He wants help for the jobless.

Unemployment benefits

Two million people will lose benefits in December because Congress failed to act before Nov. 30. Senate and House have voted down Democratic bills to extend benefits. Obama is pushing to include an extension as part of tax cut deal.

Lets see, gas price rising, North Korea and Iran out of control, taxes uncertain, my retirement savings in jeopardy, health care benefits being cut and cost rising (unions filing for unexplained exemptions), congress (under democrat liberal leadership) screwing around with DREAM, START and DADT instead of jobs and the economy. This hope and change thing that the most incompetent, inept, corrupt, lying, union toady president in history promised is very unimpressive. But he did win the Nobel Peace Prize for doing absolutely nothing.

Some good families have been hurt terribly because unemployment benefits expired for them. However, other unemployed persons are capable of making money by changing their chosen fields of "expertise."
The government cannot provide jobs for all Americans: our basic work ethic needs to be changed completely from one of dependency to one of personal responsibility. While this will require time, maintaining a Republican majority in Congress will go far in the direction of reversing brainwashing Americans have received for many decades from professional social advocates and union organizers.
To fix our economy, we need to change our thinking about work.

They should have done the tax extension before the election to give some stability to people out making business decisions. Either way I know where a majority of my investments have been focused on long term capital gains the last 15 years and that won't change. If they cut the tax incentives for my business sector I will probably sell next year. I hate to say it but there are a lot of better places to do busines than the USA and I hear a lot of other people saying the same thing.

How incredibly disappointing that Republicans like McConnell continue to hold the nation, and it's important business hostage to getting the super-rich even MORE money, and driving the deficit and national debt ever higher. For two years all we heard from Republicans were their nattering about Out-of-control spending. In leass than a month since the election they have dedicted themselves to pandering again to the rich at all costs- including national security. The only people I am more angry at than the spineless Democrats are the rapacious Republicans who are flaunting their disdain for the middle-class and poor. Republicans since Reagan have built the super-rich class in Amerca- and the rich used to pay for that priviledge with up to a 70% tax rate. It is time for them to pay their way again. DO AWAY WITH THE TAX CUTS NOW!

  5. Nancy Pelosi, the wicked witch of the west, the DemocRAT gift that just keeps on giving

Obozo and the rest of his clueless leftists in Congress have driven the economy DEEPER into recession with their insane spending and constant attacks on business in this country. Their refusal to act on the tax rates in a timely manner and to play their usual class warfare at the expens eof the entire economy is pure INCOMPETENCE. They would raise taxes in a faltering economy and throw us back into a tail spin when we are barely out of the last one. It is clear the socialist DemocRATS value their ideology over the economy that affects us all.

But this is what you get when you put cluesss leftists in control of government.
