Senate cancels DREAM vote

(CNN) - Senate Democrats canceled a scheduled vote on the DREAM Act on Thursday, a move that means the measure is likely dead for this year.

The hotly debated measure that offers a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants who came to the United States as children narrowly won approval Wednesday from the U.S. House.

The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act - or DREAM - would create a path to citizenship for immigrants who entered the United States illegally as children under the age of 16 and have lived in America for at least five years, obtained a high school or General Education Development diploma and demonstrated "good moral character," according to a White House fact sheet.

Another bill being held up/being held HOSTAGE in the Senate. I wish their were members from the House Democrats that were senators. The Ben Nelson's of the party need to get out of the party. I want to see Rep. Weiner run for Senate.

We don't need a bill that will continue to reward illegal alliens who bring their children across the border. To help the ones who were stuck here because of there parents is one thing, but there would be no end to the line this would cause. Amnesty to how many illegals for eternity? What is the deadline for who and the timeline. Just isn't going to work. Someone needs to write a bill that is more realistic.

Sounds like a republican move. I suppose the Dems think that if holding legislation hostage works for the repubs, why not use the same strategy for the Dems – until they get their way? Politics in America is pethetic!

    Cancel the whole bad idea.
Not all of the candidates for the express line to citizenship are summa cum laude graduates and Eagle Scouts with God and Country Awards.

Get your facts straight, please: they haven't canceled it. Reid simply tabled the vote on the Senate bill so that they can vote on the passed House bill next week and send it straight to the President's desk if it also passes the Senate.

Citizenship in exchange for military service? YES

Citizenship for college? NO – why didn't I get help for my college bills? That's just ridiculous.

This bill stinks. Rewrite for military service in exchange for citizenship only – then it should pass.

The DREAM ACT is a piece of crap legislation that belongs in the toilet. It is riddled with loop holes people can slip right through and there are ZERO penalties or ways to track what has been done. It will open a flood gate for illegals. Shut down the borders! DEPORT ALL ILLEGALS!!!!

Please list those loopholes and explain the procedures and oversight mechanisms and why they fail.

    Can't? Thought so.

    "Shut down the borders!"

Silly of me...I forgot to ask for your cost-effective, non-deficit-ballooning proposal for "shutting down the borders." While we're at it, why don't you explain to the class how you plan to remove all illegals immediately without spending trillions of dollars creating the police state necessary to "sniff them out" and summarily toss them back over the border into their country of origin without any due process.

"The temporary tax breaks for the rich is a very small price to pay for what Obama got for the middle class."

$120B spent on something that DOES NOT CREATE JOBS OR STABILIZE THE ECONOMY (i.e., completely WASTED) is a very small price to pay? We'll keep that in mind next time the GOP complains about spending...well, at least some of us will...the rest, people like yourself, don't really care what the GOP does because no matter what it is you agree with it and refuse to see or acknowledge their abject hypocrisy.
