Elizabeth Edwards' funeral to take place amid possible protests

Raleigh, North Carolina (CNN) - As mourners gather to commemorate the life of Elizabeth Edwards on Saturday afternoon, picketers from a Kansas-based church - along with counter-protesters - could change the mood outside the funeral.

Edwards, the estranged wife of former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, died Tuesday after a lenghty battle with breast cancer. She was 61.

Holbrooke in critical condition following aortic surgery

Washington (CNN) - Richard Holbrooke, the well-known U.S. diplomat, was in critical condition at George Washington Hospital on Saturday after undergoing surgery to repair a tear in his aorta, State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said in a statement.

Holbrooke, the Obama administration's special representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan, fell ill Friday morning during a meeting with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and walked down to the department's medical unit, a senior State Department official said. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital, the official said.

CBO score shows tax plan ups deficit $900 billion in 5 years

Washington (CNN) - The Congressional Budget Office released its score Friday on the tax plan hammered out between Republicans and President Barack Obama, showing a $893 billion hit on the deficit over the next five years.

The bulk of the deficit increase comes from loss of revenue - $756 billion - with the rest coming from additional direct outlays.
