TRENDING Is America ready for a gay prez? White House isn't weighing in

(CNN) – The White House isn't weighing in yet on a recent interview with Jimmy Carter during which the former president proclaimed America is ready for an openly gay president.

"I haven't asked," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters when questioned about whether President Obama agrees with Carter's recent comments.

An incredulous reporter pressed: "You mean to tell me that nobody talked to the president here about Jimmy Carter's comments. It hasn't come up?"

"I mean to tell you that nobody I know of has talked to the president about Jimmy Carter's comments," Gibbs replied.

Carter's initial remarks came last week in an interview with the website "The Big Think," during which he was asked if a substantial number of Americans would vote for a gay president.

"The answer is yes," he said. "I don't know about the next election, but I think in the near future. Because step by step, we have realized this issue of homosexuality has the same adverse and progressive elements as when we dealt with the race issue."

America has been ready, it is a handful of bigots that are not. Sexual orientation cannot and does not determine competence or incompetence.

Jimmy Carter – the biggest idiot that ever inhabited the WH. I won't even call him the worst president ever – the same morons that elected Obama had elected this NUT over Gerald Ford – a decent, humble man who had pardoned R. Nixon just to bring peace to the country. Speaking of rebound. Incredible...

Unfortunately, the answer is "no" and it will be for a long time. A gay candidate could have all of the knowledge and experience that the job needs, but won't get a fair shake based on bigotry. When it comes right down to it, there are far too many knuckle-dragging idiots in this country...

Why not? Republicans thought we were ready for a senile old man and a wind- up toy in 2008.

Did this idiot, Carter, compare racial equality to sexual perversion ?
This nut of an ex weak President needs to fill his mouth with some
of his own home grown peanuts and shut up.

Does Gibbs want to weigh in on the possibility of a Mormon Prez? I doubt it. But America is absolutely ready.

They need to work an a cure for this genetic defect, rather than promoting it as a normal condition. I'm only using their own words, "they were born this way," and they themselves say it is a genetic defect. So spend your time finding a cure rather than pushing it into everyone's face as a "normal" condition.

Jimmy Carter is such an embarrassment to this country. He epitomizes the looney left. He was a mega-disaster as President and has only gotten worse since leaving office. Between him and Obozo, they have the title of worse American President safely in hand.

This country DOES owe them some thanks though. Without their ignorant statements, most of America would not know these sorts of dangerous leftists inhabit this country and work for its downfall.

    A gay as president ?
Maybe a gay as Head cook, Head waiter, Head interior designer,Head usher,
Head nurse, Head seamstress, Head hair designer, or even HEAD MASTER.
But never, ever a gay president of these United States. I doubt the voters
have slid that far down yet.

Jimmy Carter...I am speechless at the insane stupidity of this remark, America overwhelmingly voted to keep marriage between one man and one woman yet Carter thinks America would elect a gay President? Earth to Jimmy, Earth to Jimmy, come in Jimmy, put your helmet back on and get some oxygen Jimmy...

Really CNN? Are we trying to be more childish than our elected officials? is saying Prez somehow reserved for gay people? I am sure the word 'President' would have worked just fine instead of Prez. Or would it?

Why is it that as soon as we get the FIRST African American president elected, CNN and all other medias feel that ANYTHING is possible now!!! Gays, Atheist, the PA'IN??? Come on Now! Why is it necessary for us to judge what a person is BEFORE we feel he/she is qualified??????

I guess 40 years from now all of this nonsense going on now will be in the past and the people of the future will try to figure out what took it so long!!!! Jeez!

It doesn't matter what the orientation of the person is. There will be someone who dislike the person for some reason. The question is: will the person do a good job as president and be a credit to the country. Could this person advance the interests of the country to help us as a country survive and prosper? If the answer is yes, then we get into more detailed questions. Technically, if the person was born here and over the age of 35, then they technically could be president if they get all the votes.

Riiiiight. JImmy needs to take his Namenda. Amurika wasn't ready for a black POTUS. And after watching the racism-laced religion-fueleed right wing hissy fit over the past 2 years, including their unhinged blather about repealing DADT, I simply can't imagine that Amurika is even remotely ready for a gay COMMANDER IN CHIEF. Half of them couldn't even tolerate gay people being willing to sacrifice their lives to defend this country and our ideals, so no, Jimmy, you're having a senior moment.

America was BARELY ready for a black president. I doubt they are ready for a woman president. Gay president is definitely far in the future.

You may not like what ex-President Carter said, but the truth of the matter is that he is RIGHT. He's very intelligent and realistic.

As far as having a GAY POTUS, it is possible that we already have...and did not know it. Who cares?

Let's MOVE ONE to address the bigger issues facing this country.

Are you serious?! The GOP is still trying to wrap their minds around the concept of a bi-racial/African American president. Can you imagine the noise the religious right would make should a gay president get into office? I don't think I wanna be anywhere near that fan when the you-know-what hits it.
