Mikulski still breaking barriers 24 years into Senate career

Washington (CNN) - Barbara Mikulski remembers what a man's world the Senate was when she arrived 24 years ago.

"There's this place called the Senate gym. The locker room," Mikulski says, slowly and emphatically for effect.

"They just couldn't accommodate me and I'm not much of a jock anyway, but that's where they networked and that's where they bonded," Mikulski says, speaking of her male Senate colleagues.

Senator Mikulski is a woman who found a way to be part of the Senate without giving up her own positions or ideals. Two women have been able to do that, Senator Mikulski and Senator Margaret Chase Smith. Congratulations are in store for this woman who broke the barrier without any fanfare and is a respected and intelligent Senator.

Just getting the senators from the two political parties is a coup in itself. The fact that she took the time to work with all new female senators regardless of party is just another reason why she continues to be so valued by her colleagues.

If it weren't for O'Donnell and Angle in the midterms there is a good chance the Republicans not only could've gotten two more Senate seats but 2 more women in Congress...thankfully the right wingers nominated ideological purists who could'nt win the gemeral election. If they aren't careful it will hurt them again in the election of 2012 but i have a feeling the tea party and other far right wingers will show the country exactly what they are TRULY full of during the Republican primary and it won't be tough to decide which party should be leading this country into the future. And who will rest at nothing to keep us dragging behind the rest of the world in EVERYTHING
