Joe Miller to CNN: "I'm not going to talk about sour grapes"

(CNN)–Joe Miller is giving up, but he isn’t standing down.

He also needs Senator Lisa Murkowski’s phone number. Miller won Alaska’s Republican U.S. Senate primary, lost the general election to a write-in campaign waged by incumbent Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski, then unsuccessfully challenged the results in court. Today in Anchorage, he told supporters the time has come, " to accept the practical realities of our current legal circumstances. We shall abide by the court's decisions even if we do not agree with them."

2011: Incredible shrinking doughnut hole (and more)

(CNN) Along with noisemakers, hangovers and second-tier bowl games, the new year rolls in changes to health insurance rules that stand to save Americans – especially those over age 65 – a lot of money in 2011. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) – “Obamacare,” to critics – was signed into law in March but was built to take effect in stages. Several key provisions take effect on Saturday.

The most prominent change will shrink the so-called “doughnut hole.” Up to now, seniors hit the doughnut hole once they and their insurer have purchased $2,800 worth of medications. The next chunk – up to a $4,550 out-of-pocket maximum – cannot be reimbursed by insurance. Under the ACA, the gap will be closed in increments over the next 10 years. It starts Saturday; in 2011 Medicare will pick up half the cost of brand-name medications for patients in the dreaded doughnut hole.

NJ governor rips critics of storm response

(CNN) – New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie blasted Democratic political opponents Friday for criticizing his absence from the state during the
snowstorm that pounded the northeast over the Christmas holiday.

He also took a shot at the media for giving what he characterized as excessive attention to the controversy during what is typically a slow news week.

American Sauce: Resolutions for an addicted Congress and the media

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Apologies to Deepak Chopra, but the wise concept of a "no resolutions" resolution should not apply to Washington. Few need resolutions (and resolution) more than the United States' Capitol.

Stepping just for a minute onto the soapbox, here are our resolutions for the powerful and the press in 2011:

Miller ends Alaska Senate challenge

(CNN)– Joe Miller chose the waning hours of 2010 to write the final chapter in the story of his lengthy 2010 Senate campaign, announcing that he would not continue with a legal challenge to Sen. Lisa Murkowski's November election victory.

"The time has come to accept the practical realities of our current legal circumstances. We shall abide by the court's decisions, even if we do not agree with them," Miller told supporters and reporters at an Anchorage news conference Friday.

In an interview on CNN's "John King USA" Miller explained why he had taken his fight this far. "Ultimately, what this was about was creating transparency in the Alaskan election system...making sure that the votes were counted appropriately, that ballot security was maintained, things that I think all Alaskans really now appreciate."

CNN Poll: Optimism for world outlook in 2011 up from a year ago

Washington (CNN) - Americans are looking forward to the new year with much more optimism about the state of the world than they did a year ago, according to a new national poll. But a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll released Friday also indicates Americans' optimism regarding their own personal lives is down a bit from last year.

Sixty-three percent of people questioned in the poll say they are hopeful about what the new year holds in store for the world in general, up 12 points from last December, with 35 percent saying they are fearful, down 13 points.
