(CNN) – Normally, it’s what Sarah Palin tweets that makes news. This time it’s what she has re-tweeted.
The former Alaska governor Monday relayed a comment from gay conservative pundit Tammy Bruce, who was expressing her criticism over continued Republican opposition to the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell military policy that won congressional repeal late last month.
Now the political world is wondering just what Palin meant to express.
"But this hypocrisy is just truly too much. Enuf already–the more someone complains about the homos the more we should look under their bed,” Bruce’s original tweet read that was subsequently relayed by Palin.
Bruce was thrilled with Palin’s re-tweet, saying it constitutes a clear signal the former Republican vice presidential nominee is a friend of the gay community.
“I think @SarahPalinUSA RT my tweet is her first comment on DADT, treatment of gays & attempts to marginalize us–thank you Governor,” Bruce replied.
The Republican pro-gay rights group GOProud, of which Bruce holds a leadership role, also highlighted Palin's “Gay Friendly” tweet Tuesday in an e-mail to reporters.
Palin hasn't said anything more on the issue so it remains unclear exactly what she meant to convey, but the re-tweet is a rare comment from Palin when it comes to any issue involving gay rights – a likely hot-button issue in upcoming Republican primary presidential campaign given the recent repeal of the long- running military policy that forbade gay service members to serve openly.
It could also be a sign the former Alaska governor's stance on social issues beyond that of abortion is less understood by Republicans and Democrats alike than was previously believed.
A Palin spokesperson was not immediately available for comment but Rebecca Mansour, a Palin aide, subsequently expressed skepticism on Twitter that the media would take notice of Palin re-tweeting “something that stands [with] gays.”
I'm glad Sarah Palin shows no bias towards gays. They r subject to enough bashing throughout our country. We need to show dignity and respect for all.
I don't think Palin even knows what Bruce meant. She saw the word "homo" and probably thought it was against gays in the military. Let me say it, "enuf" already – Palin, you're an idiot. I'm smarter than you and I know I'm not smart enough to be President.
Even Sarah Palin doesn't know what she intended to say when she re-tweeted. That's because she's a failed 'sports journalist' and beauty pageant contestant who was unqualified to be mayor of a small Alaskan town, much less GOVERNOR of anything. It's a national embarrassment this non-person was even CONSIDERED for national office.
the quitta from Wasilla will blame it on some staff member or some imaginary "Lamestream media" conspiracy. She hates gays just like all good republicans.
She probably didn't know what he was referring to...
"It could also be a sign the former Alaska governor's stance on social issues beyond that of abortion is less understood by Republicans and Democrats alike than was previously believed." How about that it is less understood by Sarah Palin herself!
I doubt it. She is an evangelical and as such, she is automatically against anything pro-gay.....if she wants the votes the evvies crank out for whoever they back. Two guaranteed ways to lose those votes are to be pro-choice or pro-gay. I suspect she is testing the waters. Being the political animal she is, she will go the way that yields her the most votes. Contrary to what she says, she doesn't necessarily vote with her conscience. Her silence is evidence. She is seeing which way the winds blow.
Or she just doesn't know how to use Twitter and hit the wrong button. I'm betting on that...
Everyday I seem to be further amazed at how ignorant and unintelligent this woman is and she actually has followers????? and those that believe she is actually a contender for POTUS. She says one thing one way the 1st moment. Then she turns around a contradicts herself in the next sentence. John McCain must slap himself daily when he wakes us for THAT decision in 2008.
Thanks John for letting the gate open.........
Or it could mean that she just pressed the wrong button and hasn't read the news yet. Stories on tweets are silly.
I think that Palin truly didn't understand what she was re-tweeting, but now that it appears it could help her widen her base she may run with it as long as it doesn't alienate others in her base. This is the cause of the silence on the issue. Spineless.
less understood? you're kidding, right? don't lose sight of what palin is all about; make it up as you go along; do and say what your handlers tell you to do and say. she's a dimwit with no real educated, open-minded opinion. left alone on a podium with no prepared remarks we'd see the blank stare that would inform ALL of this nothingness that won't GO AWAY!
folks, this comical train-wreck will only go away when we're finished gawking at it.
I bet you she did not quite understand the statement.
If read out of context, it may sounds against homosexuals. Could it be that Sarah did not get the true message of this statement... and besides the statement shown out of context is open to interpretation.
I am done underestimating this woman.
Any one who quits their job halfway into it ESPECIALLY a governorship shouldn't be allowed to run for an office. There should be a requisite that doesn't allow quitters to run for political office. America she's a gold digger.. As Barbara Bush said "Sarah should stay in Alaska"
CNN, thanks for letting us knowing what Palin tweets. We don't even have to follow her on twitters anymore.
I think she meant to unfollow, not retweet.
Sarah's base is not going to like it if she is insufficiently hostile to homosexuals. Intolerance is one of their core values.
Or it could be more proof that she is an opportunist and truly has few if any core values that she won't change depending on how the wind blows on any given day. Consistency is not in this woman's vocabulary.
Personally, I think it's a sign she didn't understand the original.
How do I say this politiely? Who cares what Sarah Palin thinks, tweets, ruminates, screams....
Homos I would consider "Gay Friendly!" Regardless if it comes from someone who is gay! Let me make a quote...actually let me use someone else saying... "I hope she (Sarah) stays in Alaska."
"Now the political world is wondering just what Palin meant to express." What else is new? She probably thought it was anti-gay because it used the word "homos".
Thanks CNN for the daily Palin update. I used to go to Fox for information on her but CNN is much more likely to feature her on their site. The coverage she is afforded as a private citizen is amazing. Is the dnc that afraid of her?
