(CNN) - Congressional Democrats are going on the offensive against GOP efforts to repeal the Democratic-back health care bill that was passed last year.
In a moment of particularly heated rhetoric on the House floor, California Rep. John Garamendi suggested the Republican effort will directly lead to "more Americans dying."
"The repeal of it (health care) is actually a killer of human beings," he said Friday. "Some 40,00 Americans die every year for lack of health insurance. That's the reality. Repeal this bill and you are going to find more Americans dying. "
Minutes earlier, Vermont Rep. Pete Welch implored Republicans to "admit what it is you are doing."
"This is not a campaign, we are playing with fire," he said "We are taking away health care benefits that make a real difference to our families."
The comments come hours before a test vote will be held to officially begin proceedings to repeal the controversial measure that President Obama signed into law last spring. Given the GOP's new majority on the chamber, the motion will most certainly pass.
