(CNN) - Rep. Mike Pence, the Indiana congressman who is considering a presidential bid, introduced an anti-abortion bill Friday that is certain to be greeted fondly by many Republicans ahead of his attendance at a conservative gathering in South Carolina this weekend.
The measure, which has 122 cosponsors and is called the Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act, seeks to ban federal funding for other services to organizations that perform abortions. The government is already banned from using Title X funds for abortions, but this bill–a version of which was first introduced two years ago–would expand the restrictions.
"It is morally wrong to end an unborn human life by abortion," Pence said in a statement. "It is also morally wrong to take the taxpayer dollars of millions of pro-life Americans and use them to promote abortion at home or abroad."
Pence added the bill "will ensure that abortion providers are not being subsidized with federal tax dollars."
Pence, the dark horse presidential favorite of many conservatives, introduced the bill a day before he will attend the Awakening Conference - an invite-only gathering on Kiawah Island of social conservatives that was originally conceived of to serve as an alternative to the more progressive GOP-backed Renaissance Weekend.
I find it morally wrong to write a bill that only effects the poor, then turn around and also complain about 'your' tax dollars going to socialist programs that help said poor. Where is your moral outrage for those of us who are against war yet OUR tax dollars are funding it... oh right .. it's the usual Republican hypocrisy talking. Republican and morals are like oil and water.
Long Live Mike Pence! May God Bless You for your hard work for America!
You nutjobs need to keep your totalitarian opinions to yourself. A large majority of Americans are pro choice and the Supreme Court ruled a woman has the right to control her own body. Now shut the hell up.
I like this bill. If a woman wants to get an abortion that's fine because I think that's her decision to make not mine. But I do not want her using my hard earned tax dollars to do it; she should have to pay out of her own pocket not mine.
"It is morally wrong to end an unborn human life by abortion," BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH. How about actually addressing the problem instead of the consequences? Comprehensive sex education and access to birth control would do more to curb abortion than pences nonsense. Conservatives "right to life" ends at birth – aren't they righteous.
I love this – that would mean that it is morally wrong to take tax dollars from those of us who are anti-war and use it to fund aggressive military actions!
This is great – it must mean that my anti-war tax dollars will no longer be used for the military actions I disagree with?
So, making women go to back alleys and risk their lives is a better idea? Or having a child you can not provide for or do not want, that ends up neglected, abused, in Foster Care, or worse, that's a better idea as well? When this IDIOT grows a uterus he can do whatever he wants to with it. I am sick and tired of these ridiculous politicians making a personal, private and often heartbreaking decision part of their political agenda. All they are doing is playing up to their conservative / religious fanatical base to get votes and $upport (typo intended) so they can force their views on everyone else. I guess when it comes to having mistresses and being closeted homosexuals (I am not bashing here, I have great respect for folks of any sexual orientation as long as they are honest about it), that's a different story. We're suppose to forgive them when they've shed enough tears, eh?
Bottom Line – He's Grandstanding and looking like an idiot doing so.
"This midterm election was a mandate to stop Obama and the Democrats in charge."
I see. Interesting. So I guess that's why a piddling 41% of eligible voters (20% less than in 2008) showed up at the polls and gave the GOP control over only one of the two chambers of Congress? 2 years of GOP nonsense, overreaching and failure to govern is going to be hilarious to watch.
It's morally wrong to severely cut all programs that aid poverty-stricken children too but the Rushpublicans have no problem with that. I guess once you're out of the womb you're pretty much on you own as far as they're concerned. That is until they need your body for another one of their never ending wars to boost the profits of their wealthy corporate masters.
Here we go again...GOP family values wingnut extremists pushing their religious beliefs on all Americans. How do they find that this is consistent with the US Constitution read aloud yesterday?
Its funny how Republicans are against government intruding in your life, unless of course its what they want, like no abortion's allowed. Hypocrite's
Keep your morals out of my laws!
You can argue back and forth about the rights and wrongs of abortion Congressman, but this statement is breathtakingly asinine –
"It is also morally wrong to take the taxpayer dollars of millions of pro-life Americans and use them to promote abortion at home or abroad."
So the millions of anti-war Americans who objected to your party's foreign policy shambles should have been able to withold their taxes that went into funding them?
It doesn't work that wayCongressman, and you know it.
"will ensure that abortion providers are not being subsidized with federal tax dollars."
Right. Because there's nothing more unconstitutional or wrong and horrible and disgusting than the federal government using its resources to help the citizenry exercise long-established and SCOTUS-recognized constitutional rights that make some portion of the upset because it violates their personal, idiosyncratic, primarily religiously-based definitions of morality. Yep. Anyone care to guess at the list I can make of all the other spending the government might do that fits that mold but falls under the conservatives' definition of wonderful?
More distractions from the GOP.
Where are the bills to create jobs? When are they going to identify specific spending cuts?
All they've done so far is put on a dog and pony show. Repeal of health care adds to the deficit. Tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans add to the deficit. They are NOT fiscal conservatives. It's more of the same BS from the party of no.
This is an open letter to all those Republican congress members who consider yourselves to be moderate or libertarian. I know you have your computer desks configured so if someone from your party leadership comes in, you can quick change your screen to the "Old Rugged Cross" wallpaper provided by the RNC, so you may not be able to read this until after your Fox News popups are shutdown. Please do not let the conservatives force this issue. Let the leadership know that they may not have the support they need for this measure and bringing it up for a vote will only result in failure and embarrassment to the leadership!
Disgusting. This is grand standing and going to hurt alot of people. Disgusting, end of story.
Republicans, prepare to become the minority again in 2012.
