'The Hammer' to the slammer

AUSTIN, Texas (CNN) - A Texas judge is sending "The Hammer" to prison. Former Republican leader Tom DeLay was sentenced to three years in prison Monday after a jury found him guilty of money laundering and conspiracy.

DeLay emotionally asked the judge for leniency. "I've lost my right to vote. Just because someone disagrees with you, it's not enough, they have to bury you, throw you in jail." DeLay arrived at the Austin courthouse in good spirits earlier today jokingly telling reporters he "had a date with the judge today." During his days in Congress, he earned the nickname "The Hammer."

DeLay was found guilty in November of a campaign-finance scheme that funneled $190,000 in corporate donations through his Texas-based PAC to the Republican National Committee, and then into the campaign coffers of seven Republicans running for the Texas Legislature. By Texas law, corporate money is illegal.

"Mr. DeLay has suffered enough. He lost it all already." said DeLay's attorney, Dick DeGuerin. "He did not rob, he did not line his own pockets. He did what he did because he believes in conservative values."

The judge will allow DeLay to post a $10,000 bond while his case is being appealed. DeGuerin says DeLay is posting bond and will be released soon.

I'm hoping he gets a nice 350 pound cellmate named bubba – and when they "play house" the hammer gets to play momma.

Another troublemaker republican, shown up for what he really is. Just another liar, in the game for his own agrandizement, and wealth accumulation.

Well done. Wish this would have happened much earlier. It would have saved our country a lot of money and acrimony.

Frankly I am surprised that he only got three years. This man violated the public trust, his oath as a Representative and his duty as an American. Why isn't there an enhanced penalty for committing offenses while in office? Guys like him are the reason I am always asked when I go overseas: "How much does a Congressman cost these days?" Shame on him and shame on the Congress for not acting sooner.

DeLay is getting off easy, considering his involvement in the sweatshop labor he's tied to in the Mariana Islands. Do a quick Internet search on "DeLay Mariana Islands" and you'll get an idea of just was a scumbag DeLay is.

Delay was a powerful politician and a corrupt one to boot. He has got what he deserved, and I hope he is sentenced not to a resort prison, but does hard time with other more dangerous criminals. What goes around came around for him. Good riddance.

    Good.

Tom DeLay is GARBAGE. It is unfortunate that the taxpayer will not have to foot the bill for his board and food and upkeep for the next three years.

Delay represents all that is wrong with the political system in the US.
He is a disgrace and 3 years seems far to short for this cockroach, I hope he recieves some proper prison justice during his 3 years.

My former Congressman. A well-deserved end for a corrupt, power-grabbing partisan. DeLay abused the power he had, and those who excused him for many years should be embarassed by their support for him, but most of them are too single-minded to notice his corruption. I wonder if he'll send some more smiling, autographed mugshots to his fans from prison?
