AUSTIN, Texas (CNN) - A Texas judge is sending "The Hammer" to prison. Former Republican leader Tom DeLay was sentenced to three years in prison Monday after a jury found him guilty of money laundering and conspiracy.
DeLay emotionally asked the judge for leniency. "I've lost my right to vote. Just because someone disagrees with you, it's not enough, they have to bury you, throw you in jail." DeLay arrived at the Austin courthouse in good spirits earlier today jokingly telling reporters he "had a date with the judge today." During his days in Congress, he earned the nickname "The Hammer."
"Mr. DeLay has suffered enough. He lost it all already." said DeLay's attorney, Dick DeGuerin. "He did not rob, he did not line his own pockets. He did what he did because he believes in conservative values."
The judge will allow DeLay to post a $10,000 bond while his case is being appealed. DeGuerin says DeLay is posting bond and will be released soon.

The trial of T.D. was a travisty.I'm not republican, but I am a conservativr democrat.
He must have been really guilty if a Texas judge sentenced him.
That's not enough of a sentence for that bum DeLay. Since he redistricted Texas, I've been without representation in Congress. He took away Martin Frosts district, and gave it to Sessions who can't even remember to show up to be sworn in.
Why am i not surprised republican gets arrested for money crimes. Why are we still letting these crooks still run for offices?
Wow!! I'm speechless. Is this supposed to be an example of Justice?? Is he the only one responsible??..........?? Is he...... Thought so.
Hee, hee, hee. See ya, Tommy Boy!
Interesting - He received @ least 3 years for his crime and Former Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Don Hill received 18 years in Federal Prison.
What's the difference in the justice system?
This is a slap in face to American Justice. DeLay should have been given a hefty fine and a immediate long sentence. This judge should be disbarred and tarred and feathered, sent to prison for the rest of his life for mocking justice! The average person is given the worst punishment but rich are just slapped on the wrist!! DISGRACEFUL!!!!
Imagine that...a politician getting jail time...amazing! What really gets me is how the media keeps ignoring the U Tube video of our current Speaker handing out tobacco money on the house floor prior to a vote. Sure it was several years ago and he admitted it wasn't in the best taste, but cummon! Lets face it...the system as it is now is CORRUPT and the sooner we adopt term limits and rules to prevent lobbies from buying votes the better off we will be and Id venture to say the safer the politicians will be as well.
This is karma coming around to kick him in the pants. Finally, one of his backdoor deals sees the light of day, and he gets to spend some quality time in the big house!
Bush and Cheney should have a prison cell next to his, starting a war based on lies is illegal.
Only three years?????
Wow, I guess white collar crime does pay if all you get is three years.
way to go....hats off, America....it does not matter whether you are cabinet ranking guy or ordinary guy like us....it is a law we need to follow, and respect....watch all these guys who are hiring illegals too, and nab.....esply india guys...
The only thing better is to have Cheney as his cell mate....
Only 3 years? I need to start getting into the money laundering business. Most businesses can't turn a profit in that span and he'll still be on free health care.
We need this guy back in office. He is a true American and Patriot.
I wonder how far the nickname "The Hammer" will go in the big house.
another liberal activist judge is persecuting a conservative personality!
These morons with robes should have learned something from Saturday's shooting!
About damn time! Now it's time to bring the next dozen politicians up on charges and start jailing those who cut oversight of the Wall Street ponzi schemes and of course lied us into the war in Iraq. You're next Cheney!
Justice served.
Don't drop the soap Tom.
Tom, This could'nt have happened to a nicer guy. Enjoy the time, you've earned every second of it . Best Regards Charles Bowen Solomon Stone
DeLay's new TV reality show: "Dancing Behind Bars."
He'll be out in 6 months.
