Washington (CNN) - Sen. Patrick Leahy issued a stern warning Tuesday on toning down the rhetoric that many say led to the shootings in Tucson, Arizona.
"The seething rhetoric has gone too far. The demonizing of opponents, of government, of public service has gone too far," the Vermont Democrat said at the Newseum in Washington. "Our politics have become incendiary and we all share the responsibility for lowering the temperature."
Doug you're off your meds again and back to seeing the world in shades of Blue and Red only.
The fact of the matter is that The Shrub intentionally killed tens of thousands of innocent Iraquis and Americans when he sent us off to bomb Iraq into submission for NO REASON; please stop getting that fact twisted with millions of Democrats wanting him dead.
The anger in this country is terrifying. Where exactly did we lose respect for each other enough to cause this kind of blind hatred? It seems like it started late in the Clinton administration, continued through the Bush years and now with Obama. Is it a coincidence that this all coincides with the explosion in technology, where you can post anonymously and stir up all kinds of trouble without identifying yourself? I think that is at the core of this problem, but no one will admit that.
albo58 – since you have the habit to turn down anything that the POTUS says or do as 'the worst thing possible' and has no shame in being petty and bickering even in such a time of grief, how do you expect that your words have any weight at all?
Rick McDaniel, the rhetoric began November 3, 2008 and it's reached a boiling point. The only "actions of the Dems" that caused it was their winning even more seats by larger majorities. The Dems put them into office two years ago, and the right, heavily funded by the koch brothers money machine steamrolled over the will of the people. The blue dogs went along with the mob, and then the mob threw them under the bus and voted for the rethug/tea party candidate. True blue Dems didn't lose their seats.
Not to mention that you can say what you want under the guise of free speech and no one either can do anything about it or they don't want to for fear of being sued. There are no checks and balances like there used to be, before this country lost its common sense somewhere along the way.
Democrats don't have any credability when it comes to using seething rhetoric. This is the biggest joke ever. Do you remember what they said about Bush and Cheney. It was horrible. When Cheney was attacked in Afghanistan the lonns were saying they hoped he was killed.
Wow a lot of people are missing the points. First, yes, liberals didn't like GWB, and said a lot of nasty things about him. That said, most of these people are on the fringe, and the actual politicians still behaved like adults. No one shouted "you lie" at Bush, no one held rallies or ginned up hate in the media. Sure, there were protests, but with the republicans the vitriol is coming from so called "leaders" of the party, not random people at marches.
Secondly, to the old argument that the president ignored people's need to focus on jobs as a priority – guess what, the GOP is as well. After all, attacking the health care legislation is their #1 priority – not job creation, and not the deficit. The more you ignore that, the more foolish you look.
Lastly, I don't ever remember heading democrats wanting Bush dead. Impeached? Yep. Tried for war crimes? Absolutely. But dead? Seriously, we were all too afraid of a President Cheney to want that.
Obummie and the libs need to man up. This type of stuff went on with G.W. and even worse. If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen.
And one last fact – to those who think the left is taking advantage of this to make a political point, take a look at how the GOP tried to cash in on 9-11 before pointing any figures.
"you wish people who disagree with you would die."
Dougy Dougy Dougy...we don't wish that at all. We don't really even wish you guys would shut up. We just wish you'd start basing your arguments on the facts and evidence instead of ideological platitudes pumped into your heads by people who have spent the past half century handing more and more of America to the extremely wealthy and corporations. It's really just that simple. They're not trying to protect you or your freedom: they'er selling America to the highest bidder.
"Leahy: 'Seething rhetoric' has gone too far"
And Sarah's SILENCE has gone too far and she has a starring role in the Rhetoric!!! What's up? No Facebook/Twitter post running her mouth? I am sure if there is, CNN will bring it to you LIVE!!
@Rick Daniel-do you also blame rape victims when they get raped?
Do some research and you might learn that President Obama and the Democrats created more jobs in one year than the entire Bush error! Turn off Fox and do some real research!
OK Already!!! We all agree the left spew hate & violence. Now is the time to heal and move forward. We all have a lot problem that need immediate attention like healthcare, jobs, social security and etc..I would like to think the left wing,Sarah Palin, tea party, Republicans and some American citzens learn from this tragedy and move forward. The damage is done. Learn from it!
I was no fan of Bush, but I didn't want him dead or to fail. That would be a failure of our country. I know many people who disliked Bush and Reagan immensly, but I never heard anyone wish them dead. I never heard the kind of hatred we now have directed at our President and Congress people, just distain. Left wing talk goes too far muh of the time, just like right wing. If left wing talk spewed hate at the same rate a right wing talk, it would still reach very few people since they are l20% of the market. Hate is still hate no matter where it comes from and will drive people with no self respect or control to react.
Sean Penn Calls President Bush ‘Our Country’s Most Devastating Enemy’
@doug, where do you get your silly information from? I don't recall ever seeing protesters calling for the shrub's death. In anyone needs to be called out it's him for starting two wars that we will never win never mind all the deaths that he and cheney caused.
Calling them war criminals is a truth. Calling for their death is over the top. Jail for a few years is much better.
I agree with Sniffit. cnn and other media outlets have given way too much power and time to those whose only purpose in life is to hate and spread lies (ex mayor, limberger, beck girl, angle, bachman, dimwit, wilson and others).
