Assault weapons serve absolutely no purpose whatsoever other than to do harm and as such should be banned. Anyone that wants them to be legal I would have to ask them what is their purpose? You don't need these types of guns to protect you, your home and family (a handgun will do that) or to go hunting (shotguns will do that). Those are the only two legitimate reasons anyone should ever need a gun for. I don't believe in banning guns altogether, but I do absolutely believe in the ban of assault weapons.

Congress really needs to take a step back before enacting yet another gun law (which one of the hundreds that are on the books, don't the libs like now?). The Tucson tragedy was truly a tragedy, but do they actually believe that it could have been averted if there was another gun law enacted?

The reason that the 2nd amendment was installed into the constitution was so that when or if the governement became to powerful and oppressive the citizens of this country have the right and the power to overthrough the government .... I would consider that a good reason!

    Minds Wide Open:
Holy God is showing us by the words of 2 Peter 3:8 that he wants us to know that exactly 7,000 years after He destroyed the world with water in Noah's day, He plans to destroy the entire world forever. Because the year 2011 AD is exactly 7,000 years after 4990 BC, when the flood began, the Bible has given us absolute proof that the year 2011 is the end of the world during the Day of Judgment, which will come on the last day of the Day Judgment.

    There are four months remaining.

They serve very well as hunting implements. I took a deer this past season with an "assault gun". Every popular gun in existence is a copy of an "assault gun" of the era. Lever action – Henry repeating rifle – Civil War era, bolt action – 1903 Springfield, Mauser, Mosin, etc – WW I, semi automatic – Garand – WW II. This is nothing else more than a normal progression of technology.

The most Shocking fact of Tuscon – Where was the Security to protect our own Government..!??

Republicans already moaning about providing protection – complaining, how much that gonna cost.!?

Even, for example, at $100k per year per Congressman for a FULL Time pro Security guard – that is $4 million

Yet – these same Republicans rubber stamped, borrowed $TRILLIONS of US Taxpayer dollars to "protect" Iraqis w blank-check 94% fraud "military" contracts for their Pals..?? Still over $28 Billion "missing" w never 1 drop of investigation allowed.

So you've obviously never been hunting....Sometimes you do need to get another shot off quickly. (Coyote hunting for example).
Also your argument that they are only to harm...why do cops use them then? To harm us? It used to be that you could buy them from magazines and catalogs. Was there a rise in violence then? No. And further more you have no right to tell me what I shouldn't own. If I want to own an HK 416 at $2500 then I should be allowed to.
Heck, maybe we should ban sports cars. They don't serve any purpose either! They can't carry many things and they go fast. They only serve two purposes. (Look cool and go fast). Oh but that speed can kill! Only cops should be allowed to go that fast.

There is nothing wrong with owning assault rifles. If you clear the check, by all means own as many as you would like. Majority of the people that own these weapons want to just enjoy shooting them. Even if you ban the assault rifles, it does nothing but put them in the hands of persons who want to cause harm.

Evidently there's no reason in simply owning a firearm to participate in formal or informal shooting competitions or just to enjoy a day at the range. More ppl die from drunk drivers so do we also limit vehicle power and alcohol content? After all no reason to have 200hp when 100 will get you to your destination just as easy.
Rather than blame the firearm, why not blame the person behind the trigger? Penalize the criminal rather than coddling them for some "syndrome".

"Mexico has strict gun laws and look what's going on there"

Mexican gangs buy their weapons in the US, courtesy of lax gun laws in AZ and other states.

@ JustMe What exactly do you consider an "assault weapon"?
