Podcast: Responding to the State of the Union

Washington (CNN) - Just about every member of Congress and a whole lot of other politicians issued statements Tuesday responding to the State of the Union address.

Listen to CNN Senior Political Editor Mark Preston and CNN's Bob Costantini discuss the dual responses:

That's standard procedure. But for the first time in memory, two responses by the opposition party to the State of the Union generated national attention. House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin delivered the official Republican response, while Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann offered her own rebuttal to President Obama's address on behalf of the grassroots tea party movement.

The decision by the Tea Party Express – a well known, national tea party organization – to deliver its own response sparked suggestions that there is a rift between the grassroots conservative movement and Republican establishment. Bachmann called such as suggestion "fiction" that she was offering a competing statement. Her remarks, which followed Obama's speech and Ryan's comments, were streamed live on a Web site and broadcast by CNN. GOP officials also insisted no divide in the party should be inferred.

There is no birth certificate. And the response will be........move along, there's nothing to see here.

Paul Ryan's Republican response was many times more insightful, honest and more effectively delivered than Obama's State of The Union.

Since you all seem to like using the word "hypocrite," guess what you becoming...yep, a hypocrite.

The Tea Party refuses to be owned by the Republicans. Yes, it was appropriate for us to have a separate response. The Republicans want to absorb us, but guess what, we won't let them.

    Four and the Door,
Must be lonely being an extreme minority that thinks Republicans are good.
After listening to all the speeches it is clear that Obama spoke the truth and the Tea Party and Republicans was full of lies so not much new. After fact checking it is easy to see why you have to be a sucker to believe what Republiucans spew. I always say if you can't tell the truth, you will always be full of blame without solutions and that is the mantra of being a Republican. If you like the truth then Obama's speech was good, if you are paranoid and can't tell the difference between the truth and lies you might get fooled by the Republicans. We can all be thankful that Obama is POTUS and has been able to save the sinking ship of America, without any help from Repubs, even though they caused the financial collapse with their spending spree that was to make the rich richer and the middle class poor.

i think the two responses has a very specific purpose. clearly bachman is to be heard and tuned into so that everyone thinks thats way to right, and then ryan comes in and sounds not as much to the right but doesn't receive the press bachman does. this is clearly a strategic plan, probably based on "the art of war"... bachman is a diversion to draw attention away from the GOP's clear agenda. it is similar to congress being interested in steroids in baseball (not an issue for congress in my opinion) but it did draw attention off the wars

The State of the Union was nothing more than another campaign speech. President Obama turned his back on the left and alienated moderates, those are the voters who fired all those democrats a few months ago. Conservatives have control of the house and the Senate is next. We will fire anyone who does not represent the people, well enough. Keep trash talking about Tea Party members as if we were irrelevant, red neck, racists instead of helping us fire those politicians who care as much about you as they do your jobs and this whole recovery thing will just take that much longer. All of these incumbents support whoever gives them the most in campaign dollars, no matter the party.

"Michele Bachmann is delusional. She has convinced herself that she can run for President of the United States"

She's doing it for one reason and it's one of the same reasons they orchestrated the fake "rift" in the party: the "news" media will pick up on the story, spread it like sensationalized butter all over America's face and it will, simply by virtue of the "news" media's constant repetition of the mindless controvery narrative and failure to address just how objectively ridiculous it is, lend an air of further legitimacy to Astroturf Frankenstein. The GOP needs Astroturf Frankenstein to be perceived as legitimate as possible so they have the political cover, justification and excuses they need to keep putting on the No-Show and the "news" media needs it because allowing the Teatards to be shown for the lying, bigotted, undereducated, misinformed, ideologues–in-a-vacuum that they are would ruin the ability to, well, perseverate stories about he-said-she-said controversies about sane people thinking one thing and Teatards running amok on the television set screaming, ranting and conspiracy theorizing another.

Ryan and Bachmann seemed like rank amateurs compared to the inspirational, presidential oration given by President Obama.

The amount of blatantly FALSE information in both Ryan and Bachmann's rebuttals was amazing. The media is so scared of being called "liberally biased" that it won't even stand up for the facts. The news is supposed to be about information, i.e. FACTS. If the media wants to cover Ryan and Bachmann's flawed OPINIONS that is fine, but it should follow up with the FACTS so that people that are not well informed do not take Ryan and Bachmann's statements as true when they are completely unsupported by any facts at all. Ryan's speech was nothing but regurgitated Bush policies and Bachmann is just plain crazy. I was embarassed for Ryan during the fear-mongering portion of his speech - he sounded so over the top ridiculous - "Unless you follow my Roadmap for America (it should be called the roadmap to turn America into a Third World Country) we are all doomed, DOOMED I say, especially your children!!!!!!" What a complete creep.
