National Review editor urges Jeb to run

(CNN) – Fresh off putting Jeb Bush on the cover of his magazine this week, National Review Editor Rich Lowry is now actively urging the younger brother of the former president to seek the White House himself - now.

Writing on the National Review’s website Monday, Lowry says it’s now or never for the popular former Florida governor who has already explicitly ruled at a 2012 bid, saying waiting four years will risk diminishing his legacy while a bumper crop of new Republican leaders emerge.

“Four years after leaving the Florida governor’s mansion, he remains one of the most impressive Republican politicians in the country, a formidable policy mind with the political chops to drive conservative reforms even out of office. So why isn’t he running for president?” asks Lowry.

Lowry lists eight reasons why Bush must and should run this presidential election cycle, including his belief that 2016 will prove too late for the younger Bush who at that point will have been out of office for 10 years.

“No doubt he will have made many contributions to the cause in the interim, but by then his main credential — his governorship and its accomplishments — will seem like yesterday’s news. Right now he has the feel of an elder statesman of the party while his time in office is still fresh,” writes Lowry.

Other reasons Lowry says Bush should run now: “The Bush rehabilitation has begun,” “He’s not just another Bush,” and “Waiting is almost always a mistake.”

CNN's headline brings to mind a George W-era bumper sticker: THE ONLY BUSH I TRUST IS MY OWN.

This is the Jeb Bush who, while running for Governor of Florida said "there will NEVER be drilling off the Florida shoreline; and there wasn't – until brother George took office.

Furthermore, he and George and a couple of Senators turned the private matter of Terry Schiavo into a macabre three ring circus. NO JEB IN THE WHITE HOUSE!!!!!

I will take anyone other than Obama. On the job training for President Obama is not working. If he gets re-elected it will be like a Carter third term..

The public outcry at the specter of another Bush in the White House would be tremendous! Is this National Review editor joking?

The country is not ready for another Bush. I am sure the super rich are giddy over thinking another Bush would be in the White House, but I think there are still too many bad memories of "W". The country will take years before it can get out from under the last mess made by "W" and the new Bush would further divide the middle and upper class.

It is amazing all the people bashing Jeb because of his brother. Talk about being blind/nonthinking/sheeple. Reading a number of these blogs the most racist person on here is that "TSAH from virginia." Every one of her postings just ooze racism. Typical, most racism in this country is black against white.

This is a bad idea on various levels, but unfairly or not, the 'BUSH' is the number 1 drawback.

If BUSH was some kind of 'savior'- one man who would single-handedly shepherd us out of the current morass into the promised land of political perfection and milk and honey, that would be one thing.
But humans like that don't exist.

All we have are fallible human political careerists to choose from. Let's not start off with one whose name speaks to dynastic ambitions, not to mention the same policies as the first 2 Bushs, Anyone for Amnesty? do you favor convolution of solid conservative principles in order to create a Republican version of their own protected plantation class, i.e. Hispanics?

If Republican opinion-makers/arm-twisters can't wean themselves off the same old tired formulas for winning power, they've consigned us to an Obama-future, and the best we can hope for is a slightly slower Obamagenda.

Remember, a Republican winning the presidency is always a win for him/her and professional Republicans, including Republican opinion-makers/arm-twisters, but may have very little to benefit working voters.

I find it hard to accept that out of 300plus million, one more Bush is the answer.

The damage wrought upon America by his brother will come to be known as the beginning of the end of this country, so the last thing we need is another Bush; I'm sure even Jeb realizes this.

The fact that conservative pundits are reaching out to him simply shows how awful the current crop of potential candidates really is.

    Dear Jeb:
Please take the same advice that your mother offered to Sarah Palin: go back to Alaska (even though you do not live there.) Remember, mother knows best.
