Washington (CNN) - Rep. Ron Paul is taking a dig at Donald Trump, days after the business mogul told thousands of attendees at the Conservative Political Action Conference that the crowd-favorite Paul "cannot get elected."
"I've won eleven times, so I don't know whether he has earned the right to criticize somebody for not winning an election when I don't know how many elections he's won so far himself," Paul said Monday on CNN's American Morning.
Paul's comments came in response to Trump's speech Thursday before the large gathering of conservative activists in Washington that this year is viewed as an early proving ground for Republican presidential candidates. Trump, who claims he is considering a presidential bid himself, ignited boos from the largely pro-Paul crowd when he question the Texan Republicans ability to get elected.
"Considering the shape the United States, we need a competitive person, a highly competent person" to run for president, Trump also said.
On CNN Monday, the 11-term congressman said he has long been viewed as an underdog.
"I run in a very conservative, Bible-belt district, and I challenged everything George Bush did, practically," said Paul. "And people say 'You can't win with that. You're too much of a strict constitutionalist. You want such little government. You actually want to balance the budget. You can't win. It just won't work.'"
Paul was the winner of the CPAC straw poll with 30 percent of the vote. Former presidential candidate Mitt Romney, viewed by many as a more viable choice than Paul, came in second with 23 percent.
Don't care for many of Paul's constitutionalist ways, but everyone else in the pack insanely wants to go back to the same Bush policies including the Bush doctrine which helped drive America into our worst collapse ever in 2008.....
Any thinking person would fight like hell not to put ourselves back under the 2000 – 2007 conditions....
I still recall the Bush republicans proclaiming that big banks and big insurance companies were 'better' for Americans due to their mystical belief that the big units would 'create' more competition and lower prices.....
And, get this part, that the Wall Street MUST be deregulated because 'Wall Street and the BIG Banks' would never fail'.....
With this Paul family, you get two for one and Americans aren't ready for either. Ron Paul would bring his son along as his VP and vice versa, I don't think so, this would be the end of the country we all know.
It's the comb over that gets me. How can we have a leader that will spend most if not all of the nations budget, on hair spray and styling gel. It's like the comic page has been opened and keeps running on, and on. Sooner or later we'll have to move on and get to some real life issues, not animated automatons squeeling low ideals, and high minded agrandizements.
Donald Trump certainly is what I think of when I think Republican......several marriages, insane amounts of wealth, reality TV star (ala Palin), and a big bully most of the time....he should run!
The only elections Trump has won was being elected CEO when he owned the majority of the votes. Luckily that's not how national elections work, although it might be now that companies have unlimited spending rights. The Supreme Court really got that one wrong!
Ron Paul has been around for many, many years
Fighting with all of his might through blood, sweat and tears
What was TRUMP doing – during those times – that made sense?
Trying to make a DOLLAR out of FIFTY CENTS!!!
This may qualify you to a very "small" degree!
But being "conceited" is a FLAW and most Americans agree!!
Ron Paul will not win because Obama will win in 2012. But, if I were on that side – Ron Paul would be a choice over TRUMPet who is always blowing his horn OFF KEY!!!
Ron Paul is not a conservative. He is a REPUBLICAN...like the kind that used to run our country...not the ones that help out now. This country needs a major reform and Ron Paul is the man for the job. He hits the nail on the head with foreign policy. Think about your neighbors. You can live around them but that doesn't mean they have to like you or you have to like them. You can let them borrow a stick of butter but your not going to pay their rent. WAKE UP PEOPLE, WE CANNOT POLICE THE WORLD!
Why all the name-calling @ Ron Paul? ("Nut-job", "Loony", etc.)
He's the ONLY candidate that isn't either a big business hack or an attorney (he's a country doctor) so who would YOU trust?
His videos make everyone exclaim "EXACTLY!" – well, except the big business hacks, the lawyers and all of the socialists/big government hacks that leech off of government.
Like him or not, Dr. Ron Paul is BY FAR the closest thing we have to ANYONE trying to bring back government to 'Founding Fathers' intents and purposes. Sarah Palin? Don't make me LOL!
No Paul – no vote for the Republicrats. I'll just throw my vote to A3P or the Constitutionalists.
I live in Texas and I believe that Ron Paul and his son and Donald Trump are all wacko, We live in a global economy. These people are isolationist. The big message the GOP spoke about while they were campaigning was "lets take the spending back to 2008 levels" Well The President just did that now they are saying "its not enough". The GOP has nothing to offer, no platform (other that hate) and no viable candidate. The Tea Party aka John Birch Society are bullying the GOP and the Republicans are bowing down to them.
