Boehner: If some federal workers lose jobs because of GOP cuts, 'so be it'

Washington (CNN) - House Speaker John Boehner said Tuesday if some federal workers lose jobs because of Republican-proposed spending cuts, "so be it." But House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi was quick to say "not so be it."

"Over the last two years since President Obama has taken office, the federal government has added 200,000 new federal jobs and if some of those jobs are lost in this, so be it," Boehner said during a news conference with reporters at the Republican National Committee. "We're broke! It's time for us to get serious about how we're spending the nation's money."

Boehner, who was joined by other House Republican leaders, criticized the President's budget proposal for not cutting enough and said Republicans would address entitlement reform when they release their budget blueprint this spring.

"Republicans will not punt," said Boehner. "Everything's on the table. We will put forward a budget that deals with the big challenges that face our country…I have no doubts that all of these issues [Social Security and Medicare] will be on the table."

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi seized on Boehner's comments in a speech on the floor, saying Republicans' proposed cuts would leave many in the cold.

"Democrats do not subscribe to Speaker Boehner's verdict that if jobs are lost in this continuing resolution, so be it," Pelosi said. "Maybe so be it for him. But not so be it for the people who are losing their jobs."

Asked at a news conference about Boehner's comments about federal workers, New Jersey Democrat Rob Andrews pounced.

"What I'd wonder – so what if it's air traffic controllers that make the skies safe? So what if it's FBI personnel working in labs that do DNA testing of suspects? So what if it's border security officers keeping people from getting into the country illegally? So what if it's USDA meat inspectors that make sure our food supply is safe? So what if it's people who test the cleanliness of our drinking water or test for radioactivity in our land?"

Typical Republican reply. Hey – he and his henchmen still have jobs and medical care, so what's to worrry, right? Besides, he is being more than a little disingenuous: most of the the 200,000 jobs were temporary census workers, who no longer work for the government. The actual number of permanent jobs is actually quite low, possible even negative. But then, the Republicans never let facts stand in the way of a good polemic.

I thought the republicans were supposed to create jobs, not take them away. Am I missing something?

From “HELL NO WE WON’T” – to – “SO BE IT!!”
Losing more jobs to Boehner just don’t mean SH**
“We’re broke…” he CROAKS – must realize our FATE
But not when it comes to – RICH TAX BREAKS!!

A trillion $$$ was added to deficit so the RICH can live LARGE!
So as a result it does not matter who lose their jobs!
None of these CUTS affects the Famous and the RICH
But “So be it” – who cares – I’m not worried about WHAT IF ---–

Air traffic controllers; FBI personnel; border security officers; USDA
“SO BE IT” that their personnel will lose their JOB TODAY!!!!
Could you consider this since JOB numbers are already HIGH and afloat??
    “I don’t care – SO BE IT – HELL NO WE WON’T !!!!!!!!!!!”

    And it will get worse!!!

Will Speaker Boehner be giving up his salary? Will making the rich pay their fair share be back on the table for discussion? This should make very clear that Mr.Boehner is no friend of the middle class. The Republican/Teaparty used the battle cry of "WHERE ARE THE JOBS." Well Mr.Boehner.where are the jobs? Not only have you and the rich right not produced any new jobs, you want to take away some of the jobs the do exist. I guess if it doesn't effect them (the far right) directly,it must be alright. He'll keep his high paying job and platinum health care an d the working class will just have to loose out.

Statements like this just show how out of touch the GOP is with the real world and average day American. Mr. Boehner should consider the following possibility – so what if he loses his job the next election? It couldn't happen to a nicer person.

It shows how heartless these people are.
As long as they are not affected by anyting that will alter their lavish lifestyles they really do not care.
How can he make such a comment, and then claim that he cares about the American People.
The statement " So be it" speaks volumes about Boehner, and what his Party stands for.
    How pathetic.

When the Republicans lose their jobs in 2012 – so be it. At least something will get done. You're supposed to create jobs not take them away. What do you think will happen to those Federal employees who do lose their jobs? Collect unemployement, become a burden to other taxpayers by going on social services?

Mr. Orange man, you're lucky you have a job for six years. But the way you're going – so be it if you lose your job in 2016.

How about members of Congress taking a pay cut.....or losing some of their staff......or paying for THEIR health insurance? Obviously, when they said the #1 issue for this country is jobs, they meant jobs needed to be cut and not created. Wake up America. We've been suckered–again!

Bohner has the heart of a rock. It's about time people WOKE UP to the fact that the only ones GOP cares about are the wealthy and the corporate!

Boehner is a complete idiot! He wants to cut then let's start with Congress. Do away with their private subway system,
make them pay for their health insurance like evryone else, cut congressional pay in half, and require them to work and not
constantly on leave, no free flights and vacations on tax payer dime. No time off for campaigning-do it on your own time like local politicians.

Republicans took the house and they are now showing what they are really made of. of course he doesn't care if people lose their jobs... as long as we have job issues in 2012 and President Obama is not elected, they are happy!

Yeah, these Dems were so worried about all of the private industry folks that lost their jobs over the past four years they controlled congress. Then they wasted two years pushing their far left liberal agenda that did not include creating jobs(no – the stimulus did not create jobs – it lined the pockets of their supporters).. I know Repubs(Bush) spent too much but these Dems came in and broke the piggy bank... Getting our country in fiscal order will not be easy for anyone and if some lose jobs or some entitlements – SO BE IT....!!!!

All you folks who voted republican, I hope that it is your job that goes. You voted them in on a wave of hate, you deserve what you get, the rest of us don't. So please line up and take the cuts, you asked for them.

Howzabout John Spraytan be the first to sign up for unemployment benefits? He can cry while he waits on line to fill out the forms. Then he can cry some more when some d-bag politician sharpens his knives and starts slashing his lifeline (i.e. unemployment benefits).

The nerve of this man. Unbelievable. I guess if Oblahblah has suggested cutting the federal workforce Boner would have cried about how POTUS is "destroying jobs." Whadda joke. Go back to Ohio, leatherface.

"We're broke! It's time for us to get serious about how we're spending the nation's money."
Because NOW there is not a (R) in the White House this guy decides to 'get serious' about the spending, and if by any chance people who are responsible for the safety of the US citizens in their daily lives (so US citizens, and the tourists/students/workers from other countries and even the illegal aliens) can eat and drink and even breath without fearing for their lives, THESE public workers, lose their jobs and those who are left behind are not enough to do it properly...
    'So be it'?

There is no leadership in the republican party. The town drunk is completely clueless. Where is a job creating bill Boner? There is more pressing needs for America than the single republican issue of abortion.

Companies are downsizing everyday. It's a sad day when that happens but companies do it to survive. What I hear from Pisslosi and Andrew is they don't care if the USA survives, as long as everybody has a job. That's why we need people in charge that knows how to run a business and no, a community leader does not count.
