Limbaugh takes aim at Michelle Obama's waistline

Washington (CNN) - Michelle Obama is taking heat from talk-radio host Rush Limbaugh after a report in the Vail Daily that she consumed a not-so-healthy-meal of ribs for dinner while on a recent visit to the Colorado resort, the latest example of conservative angst directed at the first lady's healthy-eating initiative.

"The problem is, and dare I say this, it doesn't look like Michelle Obama follows her own nutritionary, dietary advice," Limbaugh said Monday on his radio program. "And then we hear that she's out eating ribs at 1,500 calories a serving with 141 grams of fat per serving."

"She is a hypocrite," Limbaugh continued. "Leaders are supposed to be leaders. If we are supposed to go out and eat nothing, if we are supposed to eat roots, berries, and tree bark, show us how."

The Vail Daily reported Sunday Mrs. Obama dined at the restaurant Kelly Liken in Vail Village, ordering "a pickled pumpkin salad with arugula and a braised ancho-chile short rib with hominy wild mushrooms and sautéed kale." The first family, minus the president, went to Colorado for a long weekend of skiing.

"I'm trying to say that our first lady does not project the image of women that you might see on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue or of a woman Alex Rodriguez might date every six months or what have you," Limbaugh also said Monday.

Limbaugh's comments cap off a week of jabs directed at the first lady over her campaign to fight childhood obesity, taking flak from Rep. Michele Bachmann and Sarah Palin, among others, for encouraging mothers to breast feed their children as a way to keep obesity levels down.

Mrs. Obama was also the subject of a controversial cartoon last week on conservative journalist Andrew Breitbart's website, in which an over-weight depiction of the first lady is shown telling her husband, "Shut up and pass the bacon!"

A website devoted to Mrs. Obama's anti-obesity effort lays out how the waistlines of American children have been growing at alarming rates over the last 30 years.

"The physical and emotional health of an entire generation and the economic health and security of our nation is at stake," Mrs. Obama is quoted as saying on the site.

Philip James are you joking? By advocating healthier eating habits, First Lady Michelle Obama is merely doing what a long line of wonderful First Ladies like her have done before her: Pick an issue ( or two or three) that through her involvement could help make her fellow citizens' lives better. Obesity is a serious problem in this country. Michelle Obama is shining a spotlight on it and leading by example. She is usually up every morning by 4:30 am to exercise. She is no more "trying to make the government intrusive," than Laura Bush was in advocating literacy!

Rush may be fat but his isn't promoting any health ideas for the young the way Mrs. Obama, who is just a biscuit or so away from being "plump", does.

    PhillipJames,

Speaking of ginned up stuff. Can you cite exactly how Michelle Obama is trying to push restrictions on what people can eat? And what do you mean by restrictions? Laws, etc.? What restrictions?

And what is wrong with a tax break for breast pumps? There are tax breaks for a lot of things – take mortgage interest for example. Does that also represent govt. intrusion into our lives? Where, exactly, would you draw the line?

As far as I can tell CNN is just reporting what Rush Limbaugh said. I don't see any spin here. Why is it that when the far right make themselves look like fools it is somehow a liberal consipiracy?

Wait. Rush Limbaugh is talking about what people eat, their health choices and if they look fit and trim. Has he looked in the mirror? Lay off the first lady. Sick of conservative nutcases jumping on everything about her. That won't them any future elections – it's just mean.

Because we really want our young people aiming to look like the air-brushed, overly thin magazine models!

Well well well, the Limpbaugh speaks again. Let's see, he lambasted Kitty Dukakis about drug use, but ended up being an illegal drug addict himself. Then Pigbaugh dares to criticize ANYONE else's eating habits and body? Geez boy, did no one ever mention to you that if you live in a glass house you should not throw stones? And if you live in a pig's body, you sure shouldn't talk about someone else being overweight.

Keep being the bully you are, Rush. You and your mean little girl friends are an example of what is wrong with society. Are you getting your Oxycontin legally now?

Whether or not you like or agree with Limbaugh is beside the point. This woman is a hypocrit plain and simple.

People we hear only what we want to hear. Mrs. Obama is promoting a program of healthy eating that stresses moderation and exercise. A short rib dinner once a week is not a problem. A short rib dinner 6 out 7 days would be a problem. I have never heard Mrs. Obama advocate for government controls over what we eat. She and others such Mayor Bloomberg has argued for increased education and awareness by putting more nutritional information on labels.
I didn't like President Bush and his policies. However, Mrs. Bush passion and efforts to attack illiteracy was commendable and had my support. Mrs. Obama’s efforts to help get our kids are no different. While it would be tempting to reduce myself to Limbaugh’s level with childish name calling behavior, I will use my mind to assess the real facts. I don’t need Limbaugh’s interpretation to think for myself. I applaud Mrs. Obama for her efforts to address the health of our children whether they are from the left or the right!

These comments by Rush are laughable. First of all, eating ribs isn't harmful if you eat them occasionally and have a small portion. Also Restaurant Kelly Liken cooks healthy food... local, organic, seasonal, etc. It is one of the best and healthiest restaurants in town. Michelle Obama is a beautiful, mature woman with a healthy, athletic figure. Rush, however is obese.

This is the problem with America–we hear what we want–and then form an opinon on partial information.. First Lady Obama has stated in more than one interview that she does believe in having those type of food every now and then as long as you realize that if you have those ribs–it is not healthy to have ribs 7 days per week...

    This country really saddens me...

Fatboy was just divorced by wife number 4 or 5; me thinks anyone who goes through women that way probably does not really like women. As for Mrs. Obama "pushing" certain types of food – its about time. For years I have had to pay for poor quality school lunches for my children. I want my children to eat healthy – even at school.

The queen wants everybody else to watch their diet. But that does not apply to her. After all she is a queen. Just like Al Gore wants everybody else to conserve, while he uses in one house the amount of electricity a sity uses. Motto of the democrats "Do as I say, not as I do."

I guess what people are missing here is that is saying that Michelle, needs to follow her own advice if she is giong to promote it for others. If Rush told everybody to quit smoking cigars but kept lighting one up himself. The analogy would be the same. Rush is probably not the most physically fit nor the healthiest eater in the country, but he is not telling everyone else that they should be, and helping to promote policies that will make everyone do it..

The first lady is justly admired by people of all political stripes. She is an educated, classy, well-spoken lady who's a great mom and a role model to American women. Don't these crude, bloviating, semi-educated, angry conservatives realize how foolish they look when they attack her?
