Update: President Obama and Rahm Emanuel spoke by telephone Tuesday night after the election results were known and before Emanuel spoke, an Emanuel campaign aide confirms to CNN.
Chicago (CNN) – Rahm Emanuel, the former chief of staff to President Barack Obama, won the Chicago mayoral election over five other challengers Tuesday, topping the 50% threshold to avoid a runoff vote.
With almost 75% of the vote counted, Emanuel had almost 55% of the vote, far outdistancing his rivals.
(CNN) - The Republican Governors Association is showing its support for Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker with a new website amid extensive protests in the state.
The website, StandWithScott.com that launched Tuesday provides a forum for individuals to watch the governor's televised chat Tuesday and offer their support through links to his Facebook page and twitter account.
Washington (CNN) – The Senate's top Democrat said Tuesday he would propose a 30-day extension of government funding at roughly current levels to allow time for negotiations with Republicans on a longer-term spending measure.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, said he planned to open debate next week on the 30-day spending plan.
(CNN) - Rahm Emanuel was known for bringing Chicago-style politics to Washington – complete with his colorful language and take-no-prisoners-approach to politics.
But in his run for Chicago mayor there's been a new "Rahm style." Emanuel told CNN's National Political Correspondent Jessica Yellin that only pesky reporters make him curse.
Washington (CNN) – Republican Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown was elected with support from the Tea Party movement, but he doesn't consider himself a member.
"I'm a Republican from Massachusetts and a proud Republican," Brown said Tuesday in an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer.
(CNN) - On his radio show Tuesday, Rush Limbaugh defended comments he made Monday about the first lady's food choices, calling the remarks "highly civil."
On Monday, he criticized Michelle Obama – who has tackled healthy eating as part of her platform – for a dinner of ribs she consumed on a recent visit to Colorado. The outspoken conservative host said it "doesn't look like Michelle Obama follows her own nutritionary, dietary advice."
Washington (CNN) – With government funding set to run out in 10 days, and Congress on recess, Republican and Democratic congressional leaders sparred via press release Tuesday, blaming each other for steering the government toward a possible shutdown.
The sharp tone of the releases was in contrast to hopeful signs Sunday and Monday that the two sides were on a path to head off a disruptive shutdown that could affect a wide range of government services.
Capitol Hill (CNN) – The government shutdown game is back on, predictably and awkwardly, the way bell-bottoms inevitably pop up on the scene every 15-20 years. (And this raises the odd side question of whether Speaker Boehner or Leader Reid ever wore bell-bottoms.)

Washington (CNN)– CNN's Chief National Correspondent John King caught up with Rahm Emanuel Tuesday in Chicago as the former top Obama aide did some last minute campaigning for mayor.
Emanuel – who is poised for victory in the mayoral election Tuesday – said he disagreed with the way Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is handling that states' budget crisis:
