Probe Against Edwards Winding Down?

Raleigh, NC (CNN) - Fewer staffers and campaign aides of 2008 Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards are being summoned to appear in person before a grand jury in Raleigh, possibly indicating a final phase of prosecutors' efforts in the case, multiple sources tell CNN.

The grand jury, which meets in secret, was expected to reconvene Wednesday. It has been meeting as prosecutors work to prove whether or not Edwards illegally used campaign funds to cover up an affair with a campaign videographer, Rielle Hunter.

Liberal group pressures Dems not to give in on spending cuts

Washington (CNN) – As Senate Democrats grapple with how much to compromise with Republicans on spending cuts, a liberal group is launching new television ad to pressure Democrats to resist going too far.

The ad by Moveon.org, which the group says will run on national cable stations for one week, asks whether Democrats will “stop” Republicans in their quest to cut education and environmental programs that many Democrats call crucial.

Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee makes new hire

Washington (CNN) - The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee announced the hiring of Matt Canter as their new communications director Wednesday. He was previously the communications director for Democratic New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.

Canter will make the leap from managing the communications for one Senate campaign to managing the message for senatorial campaigns across the country as Democrats seek to hold on to their majority. With twice as many Democratic senators retiring than Republicans, Democrats must ready a battle plan for 2012 that accounts for the obstacles of keeping blue the seats of three retiring Democratic senators and one retiring senator who caucuses with Democrats, Joe Lieberman.

Senate passes bill to extend government funding for two weeks

Washington (CNN) - The Senate passed legislation Wednesday extending funding for the federal government by two more weeks - through March 18 - while cutting $4 billion from current spending levels.

The measure buys legislators more time to try to avoid a government shutdown. The Senate approved it by a 91-9 vote. Passed by the House of Representatives on Tuesday, it now advances to President Barack Obama to be signed into law.
