Wisconsin state Assembly passes bill curbing collective bargaining rights

(CNN) - Wisconsin's Republican-controlled state Assembly has passed an amended version of a controversial bill that curbs the collective bargaining rights of most of its state workers.

The measure was passed 53 – 42 in favor of the bill.

State Senate Republicans approved the amended bill Wednesday night, despite the absence of 14 Democratic senators who fled the state to prevent a necessary quorum of 20 votes. The amended version stripped the spending components out of the proposal, enabling lawmakers to pass the measure with fewer votes.

Republican Gov. Scott Walker is expected to sign the bill into law soon.

The Republican attack on the middle class has come out of the closet. Tax cuts to the rich, paid fro by our sweat and labor.

Don't worry about this; next election the Wisconsin people (and hopefully the American people) will have learned their lesson and undo all of this that the conservatards caused :-).

All the republicans on here crowing about how it's their turn to force legislation through as revenge for 'Obamacare' seem to have forgotten what happened to the democrats in the 2010 election.
There are consequences to going ahead with legislation people are evenly divided on, as was the case with health care reform. The republicans, however, have gone one further with legislation that over 60% of america is against.
The 2012 elections are going to be a disaster for them.

What has this world come down too. The rich wants to become richer by ABUSING the Middle Class. Middle class Republicans don't you realize that your party is taking advantage of you. Lets be real "Middle Class Repulican," you have elected and offical that does not care about the middle, all the care is about being in control so they can get some extra money from the wealthy corporations.

Wonder which government is more? Wisconsin's or the middle east? funny how the middle east is fighting for democracy while we goi the opposite way?
Voters got what they asked for. Bet you there's a lot of buyer's remorse now.

Funny how Democrats, when they don't hold a majority, run away to become the party of obstruction. How ironic how they used to try and label the Republicans the Party of No. Except in this case it's much worse. Democrats have declared war against Democracy itself! When they don't get their way, they run away and cry to their union bosses. I could never in good conscience vote for a public official that pulls these childish stunts. Democrats think they were proving a point, when all they did was to abandon the people and the country. Such a shame. Can you imagine if any normal citizen tried that? They'd be fired. As far as I'm concerned, so should they!

I Was Dumb Enough To Vote For Jimmy Carter, YeaTeam & NeptuneRex, if you have ever worked for a living you have unions to thank for your 40-hour work week, minimum wage, weekends and a whole host of other benefits. I hope you are all wealthy because when the unions are gone the middle class disappears and the United States becomes a third world cesspool and your 4-year old will be working in the coal mines and fields. Or, if you're wealthy, you'll spend the rest of your miserable life hiding behind barbed wire protected my mercenaries, and hoping this isn't the day your children get kidnapped on the 5-block drive to their private school. If the koch heads & teabags have their way, that's exactly where we're heading.

You can always count on a Republican to do the right thing. The liberals are out of control, spend, spend, think about how to pay for it later, much later. I'm proud of the Republicans that stayed in their state to do the right thing, unlike the liberal democrats that run when something doesn't benefit them or their socialist union bosses. The citizens of Wisconsin will remember the Republicans when it is time for re-election time, they will vote in the Republicans and vote out the liberal democrats. SHAME SHAME ON YOU democrats.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the complaints that last nights "passing" of the bill was done illegally...the republicans failed to follow their own attorney generals law that there has to be 24 hr notice for a hearing....today's vote may not count.

Also, if getting rid of the unions was such a fiscal issue, why did the have to get it passes as a non-fiscal item? That tells me it really has nothing to do with the budget, but with Walkers hate for unions and his love for big business and the Koch Brothers.

Don't blame unions because you are not smart enough to join or get a union where you work so you too can have collective bargaining help you get better pay and benefits.

Red Pill - according to your logic...the pay a state employee gets, union or not, makes them a moocher because it comes from the people of the state. So, let fire all of them and you can go fix the potholes on your freeways, and not get unemployment checks, and no one can run your state colleges, universities, community colleges, or police or fire departments, or anything else you take for granted but will pitch a fit about when it's gone.

red pill: "The moochers finally lose some of their ability to force everyone else to pay for their health care!"

You really are dumb. The union employees pay for their own health care, by deferring wages to pay for it. It's all part of their compensation package.

Turn off Fox, and start thinking for yourself for a change!

NC: "You can always count on a Republican to do the right thing. The liberals are out of control, spend, spend, think about how to pay for it later, much later."

You mean like GW Bush and the Republicans who started two wars, kept their cost off the books, cut taxes on the wealthy who used the extra cash to ship jobs overseas, turned the Clinton surplus into a deficit and then had Dick go on the talk shows to tell us that "deficits don't matter"?

Look at history, and you'll see that the US economy ALWAYS fairs better under the Democrats!

The Republicans keep saying that this guy Walker was elected to do this; that it was a campaign promise. I doubt seriously that too many people were focused on that particular element of his platform. In fact, I think I saw polls saying that the majority of Wisconsins were opposed to this specific piece of the legislation. Let's face it, it's union busting plain and simple. The Republicans won't rest until we're a 2 class country – rich and poor, with no middle class. Next thing you know, we'll have 7 day work weeks, 12 hour days, pay on par with 3rd world countries and child labor. Those are things unions did away with you know. It's one of the big reasons why we're great.

Hey NeptuneRex, perhaps President Obama is a little too preoccupied with the mid east and the economy to go to WI. And before you whine that President Obama isn't doing anything pertaining to the mid east; this is a matter of international security, and your name isn't on the "need to know" list for the classified conversations that the President is having with his Secretaries of Defense & State and his generals. The truth hurts, and you aren't going to get it from faux infotainment or the rethugs.

You mean like the police and fire personnel ? You need to put your money where your mouth is and if you get robbed or your house catches fire, be sure to tell the responders you think they're a bunch of lazy slobs who "sit and do nothing."

for all of you under paid non union workers who think teachers make to much money the truth is that raeganomics along with trickle down economics has froozen you wages in place for over 25 years . you don't make enough is the real problem. the companies most of you work for have been riding the gravy train for the last 25 years getting rich behond belief and the only trickle down your going to get from them is going to make you wet cold and smell bad! the wisconsin govenor is doing the same thing as our new govenor of michigan is doing by giving the revenue tax base away to business at the exspense of the people and kids. the only reason i can think of for people to be happy about what is happening to the teachers is you like your low pay so much that you don't have the courage to change jobs or form a union in your work place. eat cake seems right for people that think someone with a 4 year college degree is that much over paid! here is just how stupid or power hungry republicans are in wisconsin that they think they can just break a contract without the other person having a say. THIS IN THE COURT SYSTEM IS CALLED A BREACH OF CONTRACT. and is going to cost wisconsin more than they think they saved. it also sends a good mesage to anyone doing business with the state under a contract agreement that the contract means nothing if the state can't pay the agreed to amout they will just throw your contract out because the states word and signing doesn't mean anything to them. don't you people who lost your house to forecloser wish you could have throwen your loan contract out and paided less on your loan because you had less money..

Republicans hate Democracy, they certainly don't care about the will of the people. The majority of Wisconsin voters didn't want this to happen, it had nothing to do with the budget, and it's just bad for America. For all of you here saying these people are mooching off of us, are calling them a mob, these are our neighbors, our teachers, our family our friends. It's sad that so many ignorant people on the right suppot these thug Republicans and constantly vote against their own best interests. This will not stand, the Repubicans have gone to far.

thank God. The union's are a distructive force for true democracy, now if we can only find teachers that WANT to work for a honest living instead of ripping off the taxpayer wanting more for doing less

I'm so proud that someone finally stood up against these corrupt Union clowns. The way they work the system is a joke. Fair wages and fair benefits should be available for everyone. Not just these Union thugs. Keep it up america, We CAN take our country back. One victory at a time.

I forgot to add only a republican can cheer about taking money from a teacher that makes less than 50,000 and in the same breath cry foul on raising taxes on people who make 250,000 cause thats not really rich.
