Washington (CNN) - A loss of support among low income men and among independent voters appears to be behind the drop in President Barack Obama's approval rating, according to a new national poll.
A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Tuesday indicates that 50 percent of Americans approve of the job Obama's doing in the White House, down five points from late January. Forty-seven percent of those questioned say they disapprove of how the president is handling his duties.

" President Obama has held his own among people who make more than $50,000 a year, and he still has majority support among women with lower incomes," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "But among men with incomes under $50,000, Obama's approval rating has dropped 20 points, to just 39 percent, since the start of the year. It has also dropped 11 points among independents in that time."
Obama's approval rating of 50 percent in CNN polling is within a few points of his approval rating in recent national surveys from ABC News/Washington Post, Gallup, Bloomberg, Pew, and Ipsos/Reuters that were released earlier this month.
According to the CNN poll, by a 44 to 39 percent margin, the public has more confidence in the president rather than congressional Republicans to deal with the major issues facing the country. The survey also indicates that 46 percent say Obama's views and proposed programs are too liberal for the country, with 39 percent saying they are about right and 12 percent saying they are not liberal enough for the nation.
The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll was conducted March 11-13, with 1,023 adults nationwide questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points.

Whoa!!! 50% is still good i thought he was at 48%
I am 95% behind the man, go Mr. President!!!
I have never seen so many polls taken on a president's popularity in all my years. Am I wrong in this regard? Please inform me if I am wrong. If I am correct, then race is playing a biggger role with this president than one can imagine
He's losing my support because while the majority of Republicans are heartless & only want to line the pockets of the rich, President Obama is coming off as spineless. He keeps bending & bending & doesn't push back (see the tax cuts for the wealthy that were pushed through again). The gap between rich & poor is growing yet again, & the Republicans are trying to eliminate the middle class (see the fights in Wisconsin), & the president has come off with just words followed up with no action. Instead of the American Dream for people in our income bracket, it's become the American Nightmare. He has the opportunity to gain back the support if he would just show some backbone!
