CNN Exclusive: Bachmann to form exploratory committee in June, possibly earlier

Washington (CNN) – CNN has exclusively learned that Rep. Michele Bachmann will form a presidential exploratory committee. The Minnesota Republican plans to file papers for the committee in early June, with an announcement likely around that same time.

But a source close to the congresswoman said that Bachmann could form the exploratory committee even earlier than June so that she could participate in early Republican presidential debates.

"She's been telling everyone early summer," the source told CNN regarding Bachmann's planned June filing and announcement. But the source said that nothing is static.

"If you [debate sponsors] come to us and say, 'To be in our debates, you have to have an exploratory committee,' then we'll say, 'Okay, fine...I'll go file the forms.'"

Three GOP presidential primary debates are planned before and during early June: The first one on May 2 at the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley, California and another on May 5 in South Carolina. CNN plans a GOP presidential primary debate in New Hampshire in early June.

Meanwhile, CNN has also learned that Iowa Republican state Sen. Kent Sorenson will likely be hired to be Bachmann's political director for the state - and that Bachmann aides hope to have a complete team together for Iowa by this weekend.

Sorenson is a prominent Tea Party figure in Iowa and holds sway with evangelicals in the state. He has publicly said he will support Bachmann if she mounts a presidential bid.

The three-term congresswoman and Tea Party favorite hopes to also have political teams in place - very soon - in New Hampshire, home to the first-in-the-nation presidential primary, and South Carolina, host of the first presidential primary in the South.

"I could have state directors in all those states within a week," Bachmann Chief of Staff Andy Parrish said.

What a joke! This bigoted, uninformed woman actually thinks the American people are stupid enough to make her President. She is nothing more than Rick Santorum in a dress.

They must explore her head to see if they can find a brain ! What a complete waste of time and money ! ZERO chance of getting her being picked as a candidate. At least Palin admits she has no chance of winning and she is not going to run unless no one else runs, Bachmann should do the same as sister Sarah

Bachmann is insane. Not sure what universe should could win a presidential election. She's one of those candidates who would only agree to one debate as to not embarrass herself.

Can anyone name ANY accomplishment or landmark legislation she's sponsored??? This was the criticism of Obama. Let's see if people call her out on this as well. This woman has made some outlandish accusations with NO PROOF of anything. In her last couple of times she's tried to show her "constitutional' knowledge, she's "mispoken", i.e. the founding fathers worked tirelessly to get rid of slavery.....Huh?? Some of them owned slaves..........then in New Hampshire, trying to appease the voters there, she attributed a battle that happened in MA to being in NH. Look, I'm not saying that means very much. But if your message is that we shold be getting "back" to the constitution, then you should know your history. Again I say, what has she accomplished in Congress that anyone can remember. Last thing, let's check to see if and if so, how much in "earmarks" she has accepted and how many times she has voted no on budgets that increased our deficit. IN particular when President Bush was in command.

This loon is fulfilling every Democrat's wet dream. As an Independent (with Democratic leanings) I look forward to the press releases, reporter's questions and debates for two reasons. 1. The morbid curiousity of viewing a trainwreck; and 2. A chance for the American electorate to pass judgement on this dingbat.
I would also propose that the first thing she should do is take the citizenship test required of everyone desiring to become a citizen. As a matter-of-fact that test should be a requirement of all candidates. Do not confuse me with a moronic "birther". It would just be nice if the person elected president actually knew America's history.

I read that Bachmann has charged that global warming is a hoax and has been a vocal skeptic of global warming. She has asserted that since carbon dioxide is "a natural byproduct of nature", it is a beneficial gas required by plant life. She stated that because life requires CO2 and it is part of the planet's life cycle, it cannot be harmful. In a statement she made on the House floor on Earth Day, April 22, 2009.

By that rationale, water is essential, too much cannot be bad for us, can we PLEASE hold her head under it for about an hour and see if she still holds this belief?

Are there any serious GOP candidates? I am a life long democrat, but it is disconcerting that there are not any sane, moderate leaders in the opposing party, who can have an intelligent debate regarding solutions for the serious problems that face our nation. It is truly sad, the current GOP contenders are such extreme losers. We need opposing ideas to fully represent our diverse population. On the bright side, if the Republicans can't find a viable candidate, it will guarantee that we will have 4 more years of intelligent, thoughtful leadership from Obama and Biden.

Don't bother with your exploratory committee Michele. The people of the U.S. have not been "dumbed down" enough to vote for you as POTUS.

Oh no! Not Bachmann! The one who sat on national TV and announced that Obama was spending 2 mil a day on his India trip. If she doesn't bother to separate fact from fiction then what kind of president would she be? Unbelievable...

This is a gift to all Democrats ! Bachmann represents all that is crazy and illiterate in today's politicians. If she becomes the candidate, the Republican party will become irrelevant. Somehow and somewhere, people have to stop electing these goofy people. If one of them ever gets into the Presidency, the country will self-destruct.....

Thought I'd never vote for a woman because they just seemed to timid and feared they would be pushed around. That was before Bachmann and Palin. I would be proud to vote for Bachmann. Hell, she's got more kahunas than any male politician I know.

  94. HJS

I am no fan of Bachmann. I think she is a rube that shamelessly panders to the tea party and to people's fears. She doesn't stand a chance to win the Republican nomination. I think it's all a ploy to get her on the ticket as a Republican VP nominee. A more moderate Republican presidential nominee could please the right-wing by choosing Bachmann as VP. I still think she'd be horrible at the job, though.

What a system! What a country! Just think of it - how open can our system really be? Just about anyone can run for president - even vapid, shallow, ignorant fools like Bachman. So, I say to her - bring on your campaign, we're all eagerly awaiting the amusement and oh boy, do we need a comic relief from what the right-wing hate mongering that's been going on in this country since an Afro-American was elected President! How about a Palin/Bachman team for the "GOP" in 2012??!!?? It just doesn't get any better (i.e., funnier) than that.

I am a conservative Minnesotan who lives in Bachmann's 6th district and am embarrassed to admit it. She's a flake, at best, with the narrowest possible world view. Her thoughts, actions, and comments are all "shoot from the hip" and to "heck" with facts or accuracy. She and her followers are driven by emotion rather than clear thinking. The Republican Party uses her for her ability to pull a crowd of donors together but doesn't seriously consider her a leader or even good for the country. However, the average American voter isn't necessarily the brightest bulb in the pack so Bachmann is ignored at our peril.

Here we go again, another greed driven Ego-Maniac, who knows she doesn't have a snowballs chance of winning, ready to suck millions and millions of dollars out of ignorant and naive people's pockets just to feed her own delusions of self grandeur. How this woman would get one vote is beyond the pale. She is totally anti-middle class and simply another member of the new 'feudal' system in America – thinking everyone is here just to make her rich. Very sad that folks allow themselves to be taken in by her vitriol and rhetoric.

Normally I and the rest of the electorate do not consider mere congresspeople to be seasoned enough for presidential level consideration. Usually we want governors or high level military. But... Bachmann has shown a lot of leadership qualities. I certainly want to take a better look at her, but, I must say, she has been better and more clear on the issues than most of what is out there. A very fine person as far as I can see. I saw her speak at CPAC and she energized the room.

You will not find a television commercial of Michelle Bachmann sitting on a park bench with her arm around the wicked witch of the West, Nancy Pelosi, like you can find with Newt Gingrich. I can only hope this woman runs for president and draws the evangelical zealot vote. People like this have no business in politics and while she obviously has a "constitutional right" to be voted in as a representative, I think we can all agree her experience and intellect are lacking tremendously. How anyone could justify voting for someone of this quality is beyond me and hopefully beyond most Americans. If it isn't then we're seriously in trouble. (Then again this country did vote George W. Bush into office for 8 years so I suppose anything is possible)
