(CNN) - Mississippi Republican Gov. Haley Barbour on Saturday criticized President Obama's economic policies and urged fiscal discipline in Washington.
Speaking in Des Moines, Iowa, to a crowd of conservative activists, the potential 2012 GOP presidential contender said, "When the government sucks all the money out of the economy, how is the private sector supposed to create jobs?"
Barbour slammed the Obama administration's tax policies for placing an extra burden on taxpayers and inhibiting job growth.
"The president from the beginning has been calling for the largest tax increase in American history," Barbour said, adding "the policies of this administration in every case have made it harder to create jobs."
Barbour also struck out at taxes placed on the oil industry, saying they would be passed on to consumers.
"Who’s he think is going to pay that? Exxon?" Barbour said, "That's going to be paid by the people who are pumping gas and diesel fuel into their cars & trucks."
Citing the need to jumpstart the economy, Barbour told the crowd that reducing spending would be key.
"I urge you to remember the most important thing, cutting spending is the means to an end, the end is to continue to grow our economy,” he said.
Which tax increases is he referring to? The planned expiration of the Bush tax cuts (that they twisted his arm to extend even for the rich)? Those were not meant to be permanent. When items go "on sale" in a store, do you expect them to stay at the new, lower price forever? No, after the promotional period they go back to where they were. Obviously those tax cuts benefitted everyone, so no one really wants to get rid of them, but calling it a "tax increase" when it's just a reversion to the previous "pre-sale" levels is not accurate and is a shameless attempt to frame the President as "tax-and-spend."
How do these people call themselves God-fearing!?! CNN and all the other supposed news outlets are all in cahoots with the corporate takeover of this country!!! Life in this country is no bother than Somalia!! Thank you,CNN for your outstanding professionalism in journalism in debunking this corporate whore's "statements."
this coming from the governor of the poorest and the most uneducated state in the country. For him to criticize anyone is amazing.
Its never enough for Republicans and their corporate sponsors: taxes in the US are at their lowest since Truman was President. Obama pushed the biggest tax cuts in history.
I am absolutely positive that taxes have gone down under Obama. It's one thing to criticize, it's another thing entirely to lie about it.
We've had a full decade of tax cuts upon tax cuts – and all it has created was record deficits, economic collapse, stagnation of wages for 98% of Americans, while concentrated obscene amounts of wealth in the hands of just a few. When will the GOP stop with trickle down economics and tax cuts as some sort of magical cure all?
All Obama has to do is freeze gas prices, criminalize lowered gasoline production from current levels, and stop big oil subsidies. Put suites in jail for gouging. Simple.
Cutting spending and restructuring the tax system is needed. I'd like to see some data on a tiered "flat" tax. As an example only, below a certain threshold, 0% (say 150% of poverty), and gradually rising based on the % over poverty (such as 150% to 300% pays 5%, 300%-500% pays 10%, 500%-1000% pays 15%, 1000%-2000% pays 20% & over 2000% pays 25%). It could be supplemented with a modest (1%) Federal sales tax on most purchases (exclude things like primary residence, automobile, etc). Those below 500% could deduct sales tax at filing, perhaps, too to limit the impact on the lower class.
Clearly, some changes to entitlements have to come about or nothing else we do will matter much. That will be the hardest thing to deal with in this hyperpartisan, me-first society but it must be done.
This coming from a Lobbyist Governor of one of the poorest states in the union !
Get ready for a consumption tax people , wouldn't it be nice to have a flat tax ?
Old Kingfish Barbour's understanding of economics is zero , trickle down corn bread !
This guy knows nothing about how the economy works. And taxes under Obama are lower than they were under Bush. But we got the Great Recession of 2008 precisely because of Bush's tax cuts. That is why they need to expire once the economy is stronger. Lets take the tax breaks away from oil companies and give it to other industries like green technology and energy.
Gracious me, the economy would be booming if the rich and especially the corporations paid their share of taxes. You know like GE who didn't pay any. What do you think would happen to the middle class and a poor person if they tried that. Even some of the well off who weren't republicans couldn't get away with it. Wesley Snipes is in jail while fat butt Thomas sits on his and didn't declare his wife's for 20 years. And not a darn thing is being done to help HIM accountable. You know republicans, get away with anything, that we the serfs don't dare.
Cutting spending by itself will not solve anything. In fact, it can be just as damaging to the economy as just raising taxes. He is correct in stating that companies will just pass their higher taxes on to consumers, and that is the problem. Our government needs to enact legislation that prevents this sort of reaction by companies who realistically will not be harmed by a tax increase. Does Exxon really need BILLIONS in profits? Can it live with a billion less in profit? I'm pretty sure it can.
Its ironic to me that he talks about not passing cost on to consumers but he makes sure to pass the cost on to the people of Mississippi when he uses the governeors private jet to campaign as president (which is exactly what he's doing right now) but schedule in some quick event he can say was to benefit the people of Mississippi. how surprising a hypocritical politician
"Barbour slammed the Obama administration's tax policies for placing an extra burden on taxpayers and inhibiting job growth."
Didn't the Bush cuts get extended a few months back? These right-wingers are anything BUT disciplined fiscally.
Ummm, Yeah. Obama because president and created all of these taxes., and he's responsible for what the politicians are doing in almost evey state now. And how much do you make per year Mr.Barbour ? What significant steps have you taken to improve the economy and jump start new jobs ? Just a bunch of yelling and screaming, and again, more disrepect towards our President. Way to set an example for our kids. time to shut up or put up. I think eveyone in America knows the real reasons on why things are screwed up, everyone is pointing the finger at everyone else. this is going to require a joint effort, and for the people to decide what we want our future to be, and I don't think this is going to include any politicians. Wake up America, time to take some responsibility, our politicians sure won't.
I was going to comment that no one should care what this fat hillbilly thinks but judging from the fact that no one has commented on the article, I guess no one does care what he thinks. As it should be-way to go America!
